Re: Chinese FT-817 TCXO?

Edited

Christopher,

it seems that here is the Yaesu TCXO-9 still available:

so do not bother yourself with Chinese junks...

The smaller TCXO case is latest actual version, the bigger one TTSO1NS-P1 package is older one produced in 2018.
If you would have problems with purchase in Germany then I am ready to help you.

My FT817ND does drift slowly on 2 meres, but this is manageable. I don't use it on 70cms FT8

Subject: [ft817] 2m & 70cm FT8 - Frequency stability?

Does anyone have experience of using the FT-817 on V-UHF FT8?

If so, how do you find the frequency stability? Apparently, for FT8 you would need less than 0.5 Hz/second drift to be successful.

Real experiences appreciated, knowledge of retro-fitted TXCO and GPS devices welcomed :)

Chuck,

be sure that nobody is insulting hospitality of all here. Please do not overdo it...
If the 818 group will be shown as unnecessary and useless then it can be cancelled...
I did not want to bother others here with specific 818 topics and now I am desperado, ...huh :(

I feel the new group is insulting the?hospitality?of all here, and has no reason or purpose or need to be separate.

I have an FT-817, but I do not have an FT-818 so I had assumed that this new group would not be relevent for me. But I really do not like assumptions and generally try to verify that they are correct. However, since the current [FT817] is working well, I was a bit mystified by the emergence of the dedicated FT-818 group.

I now assume that the FT-818 must be having lots of problems the solution of which are not relevent to FT-817 users. Is that correct? Or, maybe, the FT-818 has numerous features that are absent from the FT-817?

Just wondering!

Re: 2m & 70cm FT8 - Frequency stability?

I have been using an FT817ND as an IF rig for the microwave bands on 144 and 432 MHz. I do not have the TCXO installed. I have never had any problem with its stability or accuracy.

Chinese FT-817 TCXO?

It looks like the OEM TCXO-9 is out of stock, I am not sure if it is
discontinued or there are just supply chain issues. There are all
kinds of Chinese copies of these things for dirt cheap. However, it
seems that they increase the noise floor on the receiver. Are there
any of these copies that don't do this?

Thanks,

Chris KQ6UP

Re: 2m & 70cm FT8 - Frequency stability?

I'm using a FT818. With a transverter?when using QO-100, and a chip SDR to receive. The only problem I never had is with a LNB without TXO...?
Trust in it

It is not as simple as it looks like Roger...

Except these mentioned changes (lack helical filter on 70cm is shame) realize:

- no longer orange light on 818 front panel to indicating battery charging?
- no longer high power 5(6)W available on 818 when battery powered
+ precise TXCO-9 furtunately installed in stock 818
+ grounding of the boards / shielding inside 818 is changed to avoid additional noise
+ 60m band furtunately added to 818
- In menu Option 10, backlight set to AUTO will never actually turning it off on 818?due to the plug being in the DC power barrel socket.

...and other changes compare to 817/817ND

The only significant difference in design with the FT-818 not yet discussed in this group is the deletion of the helical resonator in the 430 MHz receiver section. This is a fairly expensive part ($10-$20)and unless you have a fairly crowded 70?cm band not essential for good performance. Besides that, there is the improved battery specification, the LCD backlighting colors changing and maximum power output setting being adjusted up to 6W.?

Bob,

not at all... no more issues or specific problems on new 818.

Please do not look for anything complicated in it. I just thought some of the 818 only topics might be bothersome to other 817/817ND owners so I got an idea to create this group. No urgency, no emergency just enjoy...

Most of the items, functions, features etc. are similar or common of course.

Maybe it is good idea, maybe not. We will see.

Doesn't seem good to dilute and hide info by a pointless subdivision.? A common library for 8177/818 stuff would be good, but we have that now.

This group is already a great place for finding info and asking questions about the 817 and 818.... Why dilute the medicine??
