cracked digital display

good morning from Manila

I have a problem with a FT817nd which the frequency display module cracked on me, I made the mistake of packing it inside a suitcase as a check-in and when pulled it out I found the screen was cracked.

I contacted Yaesu and they insisted?I needed to replace 2 items which if combined was around $600 as my son mentioned for that price would be like buying a new radio.

Anyone know where I can get this item its been at the repair shop for nearly a year due to the covid19 situation.

Mail here has been at a stand still since the President shut down airlines.

According to the APP data, the difference is not in the contact itself, all the standard contacts are rated for 45A.? The difference is in the wire gauge the terminal can handle.? The 15A terminal can handle 45A, but an 18 ga wire cannot.? The 30A is limited to 30A only because of the 14 ga wire.

?

Back when I was young and cheap, I would have doubled up the thin wire and soldered it, or beat it with a hammer to flatten the connection.? For bigger wire I would have driven a drift-punch in and spread the connection open.? I’m not that hard up anymore, and actually the smaller terminals are cheaper too.? So I sucked it up, bought the full kit with the crimper a few years ago.? Now I’m in APP heaven.? Use the right terminal for the right size wire….. only the 45A terminals are that expensive….. but mostly I use the 15A or 30A anyway.? Just used a hand full adding a brake controller to the JEEP.

Hi Trevor,

?

You can use 15A, 30A or 45A ones as they all use the same size housings. The most common are the 30A ones.

Waverley ARS in Sydney sells bags of 10 sets for $25/bag and which you can order through their website vk2bv.org. BTW, theirs are genuine Andersons, not the Chinese copies.

Hi,
stuck in lock down here in VK3, I've resurrected my FT817 and treated it to a Windcamp Power-pole adapter. My dilemma is that electronics shops are closed for browsing and I'm not sure what size/rating Anderson power-pole connectors I need to order to fit the Windcamp adapter.

Can someone assist please?

Just want to note that PowerWerx offers bags of inserts so you'll always have the proper insert for your particular wire gauge?

Re: What size Anderson Power-pole connector to use with Windcamp power-pole adapter?

Guys,
The difference in the 15, 30, and 45 amp power pole is in the size of the wire they accept.? The contact size is the same for all three of these connectors.? The larger wire will in effect wick some of the heat generated at the contact to allow higher current to flow without connector failure.? I keep 30 amp in stock and if needed, you can widen the shell a little to accept #12 or even #10 wire before crimping.?

Just the fact that the serial number begins with 8N indicates that it was manufactured in December 2008 which was well after the ND started being produced so it is an ND.

Yes, I first thought I had the FT-817 original and was locating parts using the service manual for that, and then a few days later I was inspecting the final module PA transistors and it hit me, this is the FT-817ND – huh, a welcome discovery indeed. So I was able to find the FT-817ND service manual which is more or less the same, (with the same mistakes) but? additional sections.

?

I agree with others who say the label on the new radios should have read FT-817ND. Perhaps the FCC filing requirements were too onerous for the new batch, or that the original FCC filing for FT-817 covered the 60m band coverage? Who knows.

?

Can anyone tell me the observed max current draw at full Tx power on DC input for the FT-817ND? I am expecting a bench linear power supply shortly, and need to make cables and set the current limit.

Re: Repairing the VR-UNIT of a FT-817ND

Hi Samudra

Thanks for sharing the photos. I see what you mean about the hard life of this rig.

Wow, my original 817 look pristine compared to that one. But then I do always take care

of my stuff.

I apologize to all for not realizing that my images were being posted/stored with full high resolution - that was not what I wanted. For now, I am only sharing from my personal account due to limitations as I do other work on the computer. It's a folder of all photos of the current FT-817ND repair project. I haven't worked out a method for indexing at this moment. No commentary. I am the photographer for copyright purposes. All rights reserved.

The first few photos (timestamp is synchronous) show the very odd 3D plastic printed case that the transceiver was "fitted very tightly" in by an unknown party about 3 years ago. That was AFTER they had tried to repair it. I couldn't get anywhere with sliding it off the case, so I used a pliers to tear it off. Seriously ? I'll replace it with a more user friendly and easy to maintain rail/cover/jacket/bag if the radio system comes to life. Maybe even a neoprene rubber cover but that's just an idle thought for now.

If anyone can QSL the sharing process, that would be great.

Just as a point to this, I never saw any pictures to any of these subject emails. So I guess

my question is what happened to them?

However I can understand the concern and would not mind seeing a link included to see

the pictures, as I have interest too.

Scared the heck out of me when I saw your message 'cause I just sent some high res photos directly to Sam. But I did it via the private response section. Phew!

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Confirmed that the 1900 mAH battery pack is now standard for ft-817ND per Yaesu. It is supported by internal charger so convenient. A bit costly though.?

All parts ordered so perhaps by next week plus may have a sitrep on the repair job. Got the right service manual in hand.?

Hello,?

some answers for you.
1) no, you just solder it. There is no update to show there is a new part.?

2) use a service manual to make sure all the functions are working. There are procedures for checking TX and RX but you will need access to test equipment.

3) I don’t know if there is a firmware update available put it’s probably not user serviceable, and you’ll probably have to send it in.

4) I don’t know if the part number of the battery case has been replaced but is Beatriz Veralde at Yaesu USA told you that’s what you need she is probably right.?

5) I am ordering the same thing. It’s on backorder so if I get it before you I will reply again. But don’t throw anything away just yet.?

6) for paint, probably a matte color, clean the case really well, I’m not sure what to do with the info sticker but keep it safe with masking take or something. To prevent unevenness you should remove all the old paint that you can. Use a primer before the final coat. Use instructions for doing automotive paint to get a food surface, including wet sanding between coats it may help get a good looking end product.?

Mike,

I don't like that either!

However, there is a simple cure which you can implement. Review your
group subscription settings, Advanced (IIRC), and you can set the
maximum attachment size to 0 - "no attachments". Instead the images
are stored in the group and a link to each image is provided at the
end of the e-mail. Best of both worlds! Applies to files, too. I
always use Plain Text for incoming which message size even further.

You can do this for all you Groups.IO subscriptions.

Folk should always try to make the file the smallest possible, while
keeping enough resolution to that the detail in the image is clearly
visible. Quite an art!
