Re: 817 Final Repair Costs?

Hi Kennth
?
All you need is a multi meter as you measure the standing current, just follow the instructions in the service manual as they are very clear and easy to follow. I used clip leads and added a short tail to the board where the link goes so as to avoid any accidental shorts.

The PA is available as a module and is pretty easy to replace, apart from soldering a few leads you just need to setup the bias with a meter. Last time i checked here in the UK the board cost ?38 from Yaesu UK and so not an expensive item and easy to get hold of.

$400 sounds pretty crazy so must have included some big ticket items, Alignment is pretty easy if you have the gear.

Hello Group,

I recently purchased a “working” older 817 at a ham swap, and on testing it has no RF output. I have downloaded the service manual, but I wonder if anyone can tell me what Yaesu charges these days to replace the final transistors? I spoke to a guy recently who was charged over $400, including some realignment. Ouch!

Also can someone please point me to a source of the final replacement boards?

It could be something minor, I know, but nobody answers the phone at Yeasu when I called Customer service the last 2x. This is the last radio I will buy at a swap with the expectation that it works! I have not lifted the lid, yet.

Thanks, Jason NJ7K

Re: FT817 woes

Hi,
I had same problem.
First, unplug all power, including battery.
Open top cover and locate the TCXO board (close to the metal enclosure on the upper right side, that contains the PLL). The small TCXO board is inserted in a kind of socket (4+3 pins, if I remember correctly). Remove and reinsert this small board several times. Finally insert it, reassemble the radio and apply power.
Hopefully it will work. It worked for me. Guess I was lucky and it was just a matter of bad contact.
Best of luck to you.

Yeah - the second one looked promising.? That is what I wanted to know, expand the HF while leaving V/UHF alone.

?

I got another suggestion what was actually more promising.? I have the ability to program the 60m channels in the FT-817ND.? I’ll just change them to meet the German band plan, 2 for CW and 3 for SSB.? It isn’t a HUGE band, that should do it.? And when I come back, I can re-program in the USA freqs again.

I don’t even need to heat up the soldering iron for this.

Re: Trade for 6m antenna

Have you considered something like this:

Not a trade, but a simple, rigid, 6 meter dipole that's very easy to build and modify down to 20 meters (by adding additional tubing to each side).

I've built one, world well (but then again, why wouldn't it?).

Re: [wsjtgroup] Trade for 6m antenna

Randy,

I want to start by apologizing for Jerry for not even reading your post.? It appears he is trying to sell his beam to anyone that will buy it.

I don't know how capable you are, but with a few simple hand tools and some easy to obtain materials you can make yourself a loop, delta loop,?square loop, halo,?dipole,?or Maxon antenna for 6m.? You'd need some wire, a way to measure it, a way to cut it, and a soldering iron/gun.? Cut the wire to length (the internet is full of calculators that will help if you need it).? Do any soldering as needed.? You can use painters tape to tap it to a wall or celling without causing damage since I assume you are renting the apartment.?? Run some coax to your radio and tune up your new wire antenna.

BTW, you an build a beam that way too.? It's just would be very difficult to rotate it.? BTW, the Maxon would be hard to rotate too.?

I hope this helps you or anyone else for that matter.

I picked up said board in Toronto, Ontario at Radioworld a few years ago for I think $50 CAD.

That'd be about $1.95 or so I think in USD right? <g>

I don't see in a very quick search of the site. Perhaps drop them a line.

They bought GPS Central and run it as a western site. Try them too perhaps.

Re: 817 Final Repair Costs?

Thanks for all the nice advice and comments. As advised Yaesu, I will just send in the unit for repair and report the results to the group. No one sent a link to the replacement Final Board source (UK?), but having one on hand could prevent any more failures (you know how that works). Best Wishes, Jason NJ7K

Wide banding the FT-817ND.

Howdy all.

?

I’m looking for some specific information on opening up the transmitter on the FT-817ND.? I have avoided doing this for a number of years.? But in two weeks I’ll be visiting my friends in Germany again.

?

Germany now has a “60m BAND”.? It isn’t just 5 channels like we have in the USA, it is an actual BAND.? And I’d like to use my FT-817ND on 60m while doing SOTA activations.

?

Here is what I know.

?

To extend the HF range JP4006, JP4007, JP4008 should be shorted and JP4004, JP4005, JP4009 should be open circuit.? Leave all other jumpers as they are.

?

This is what I want.? I really have no desire to extend the 2m and 70cm bands.? In fact, I wish the 2m band was ONLY 144 to 148, I don’t need to or want to hear all the out-of-band crap when I’m trying to work weak-signal stuff.? Screw pagers and NOAA.? Just unwanted noise.

?

So…..? My question is this.? Has anyone tried just one jumper at a time and discovered that perhaps this might work:

?

JP406 short and JP404 open is for HF only.

?

JP407 short and JP405 open is for VHF only.

?

JP408 short and JP409 open is for UHF only.

?

Anyone got an answer?? I am running out of time, I’ll need to modify it soon.? I waited too long already, so I’m hoping someone can tell me instead of spending a few hours playing.

?

I tried asking Yaesu.? They were very hard-nosed about it, refused to talk unless I could produce a MARS license.? Like a MARS license makes a difference in Germany?

?

THANKS MUCH ALL…..

?

Watch for DL/KD5KC in June.

Any ideas?

Panadapter, SDR output recommendations sought

Hi all,

I use my 817 as the IF for microwave transverters and it would be nice to add a panadapter/SDR output to make finding the weak signals easier.

Googling around finds a few devices, some no longer in existence.

So I'm interested to hear experiences and recommendations for those of you who have done this, pointers to products etc.

thanks

Tim

Re: CW key

To select the straight key or keyer paddle must be in CW mode.

My FT817 is non-ND, my manual shows CW transmissions on page 32, might be different for yours.

For selecting key or keyer paddle with built in keyer operation:
1. F key and go to menu 10
2. [VOX,BK,KYR] will show.

For straight key there should be no arrow at KYR, for keyer paddle arrow showing.

BK turns on/off the rig xmting when key pressed.? If off can hear CW tone, but rig will not xmt.? If on will act like VOX in SSB, just key on pressing key.

Again must be in CW mode.

There are other setting in other menus for CW like pitch, delay (hang time) and sidetone level.

Re: Z-817 batteries flat

Another idea along the lines of N4EYZ is a "cap plug" over the button.

Re: 817 Final Repair Costs?

Once your 817 is repaired, what are you going to do
to prevent the same thing from happening again? There
are very specific requirements that must be met, otherwise
it is just a matter of time before you blow another PA board.
I have been there, done that. There's one or two articles on
how to protect your 817 with a very minimum of components. I
urge you to look that up and take heed.

BTW, I bought the replacement PA board from Yaesu. It's an easy
thing to swap. Just make sure the shields of the connecting coaxial
cables go to the right place on the board, otherwise you open a
somewhat more complicated can of worms.

Best regards,
