Bummer Leeds, but the 817 does have power foldback protection against

I have been using the ATX Walkabout 3/8-24 thread base with the

Is there an adapter available anywhere that is bnc on one end and
threaded on the other? I have asked around and no one seems to know of
one being manufactured ??? Jo

Bonnie I have an ATX antenna, and I just can't imagine that it would be strong enough to survive a ride outside a vehicle at anything faster than walking speed. Have you actually tried it that way?

I have been using the ATX Walkabout 3/8-24 thread base with the
SuperAntennas FT-817 Mount.

I'm happy to report this combination is much more durable than my
other ATX Walkabout BNC mount, even with the PL-259/elbow adaptions to
the SO-239 of the FT-817.

Another nice thing about the ATX 3/8-24 is that it is compatible with
other mobile fittings, so it can be used as a rental car mobile
antenna with a trunk-lip or other type of mount.

The swivel part of the Superantennas mount can be removed for packing
and I sometimes still use my ATX-BNC when I need a smaller pedestrian
package.

I purchased an ATX walkabout and they sent the wrong one (wanted the
PL-259, got the BNC connector) - Not really problem, things happen.
But when I have emailed them (Mark Francis) 4 times and they won't
respond, something is wrong with their service.

It sounds as though you have downloaded the 'executable only'
from the web site. The first install must be done with the
'full package' download called ftbfull.exe which includes all
of the runtime modules.

Try installing with 'ftbfull.exe' and if that does not work then
email me direct and we will sort things.

Richard asked:

Is there any reasonable CAT software out there for the 817 yet?

Richard G3UGf
I don't know if you'd consider this "reasonable" but.....

A fellow ham at work is a co-author of a program called "HzWORX".
I know it works with MY FT-817 and MY FT-847 because they were the
rigs he tested it on!

Here's the description from the CD back cover:

"Trying to remember where all the nets, code sessions, bulletins,
beacons, special events, repeaters and emergency communications
are located can be a mind boggling task for even the most
experienced amateur radio operator .... Until NOW!

"HzWORX organizes hundreds of time and frequency dependent events
and displays them through colorful event markers -- when and where
you operate. Displays fixed frequency advice for amateur radio
bands (160m to 23 cm) and the general coverage frequencies (2 to
30 MHz).

"Includes HzWORX Advisor database: >500 events (add, modify,
delete your own)
DX Beacon tracking tool with WWV access
---->>>> Point & Click radio frequency/mode/VFO control <<<<----
Log Book -- electronic QSL ready, store, e-mail, internet links,
graphic links
FCC database -- call sign lookup, compatible with internet and
popular CD databases
SESurfer for gathering special event data
QSL Card and Label Merge documents
XPhoto saver Screen Saver for displaying photos, QSL cards,
awards"

(My emphasis on the CAT rig control line...)

System requirements: Win95/98/NT, 200 MHz Pentium, 32 MB RAM,
200 MB hard drive space, 800x600 256 color graphics (64k or
higher preferred), CD-ROM drive, COM port for radio control
(you provide the interface cable)

Sorry if this sounded like an advertisement. But I wanted you
to have all the info I have about it. More info:

I got a copy in return for use of my rigs in testing, but I
haven't loaded it up yet, so I can't comment further. Sorry.

Hope this helped.

Re: U.S. Source for ATX Walkabout

Dale E. Reed

From: kr8l@...

The ATX Walkabout may be available in the U.S.
Well, there are some advantages to living within 20 minutes
of AES Cleveland. Here's what I heard from them:

Two weeks ago:
They had ordered some from W&S to sell here, and were
waiting for that order to arrive.

Last week:
They told me that MFJ had worked an exclusive to sell them
in the U.S. They thought they might still get their order
from W&S but weren't sure.

Today:
They had the MFJ-packaged ATX with BNC connector hanging
on the wall. Not sure if they'll get the PL-259 or
3/8"-24tpi models.

My personal guess is that you'll see MFJ hyping them in QST,
CQ, etc., by September, maybe earlier if they can turn the
advertising around that fast.

I'm also guessing you'll pay a bit more than UK (pound symbol)
69.99 minus VAT plus shipping. [Mine came to less than $110
(USD) when I ordered direct from www.wsplc.com and it showed
up in less than a week.]

Yes, I go to AES way too often. Imagine if I had bought
the house I looked at which was 3 BLOCKS away!

shipped it GROUND!! Now that's service!)

Well, now for the fun part. I've followed the discussions (or is
that cuss'ins) on the various add-ons. What do you consider your 3
most important adds to the rig?

I know this can be dependent on planned usage so here her goes.
Planning on using it as 1) portable to my folks mountain "retirement"
home, ditto the in-laws. Great trees to string a temp long wire
(thinking z-11 and some random length wire?)

Batteries?
Other antenna for walking around the country side? (my folks are in
the middle of nowhere!)
ETC?

Thanks for any advice - Have a great weekend!

Re: Holding your hand close on 30 meters

Ed Juge/NM

Sounds to me like it needs a good ground or radial(s). Characteristically,
when you hold your hand near an antenna system, you are lowering the
resonant frequency of the antenna, and if you detune it enough, you can
affect signal (or background noise) strength.

If everything was working right, holding your hand near the rig shouldn't do
that. It sounds like the radio thinks it is an active part of the antenna,
which would lead me to believe something is wrong with the tuning... either
the antenna is way off frequency or the radio wants a ground.

Has anyone had this strange problem? I was messing with the FT-817
the other night, using an MFJ 941C tuner and "zip-cord" dipole antenna
out on the porch. I had no troubles on other bands, but on 30 meters,
it acted like it was getting RF feedback. I could hold my hand near
the rig and could hear the background noise go down. If I did the
same thing while transmitting, the SWR went up. This doesn't happen
on other bands.
I too the rig in and hooked it to my Tentec tuner and outside antenna
and the problem was gone. I was operating with internal batteries at
the time.

Any ideas?

A pile up? For little ol' me?

Dave Bushong

To: FT817 group

What fun!

This past week we were driving my wife's mom's car back from Fla, and I brought my 817 with me. I had a mag mount, but because of the shape of the car, there is no flat part, and the antenna blew off over about 50 mph. So I was limited to operating when we stopped at a hotel.

Because we were so busy doing other things, I didn't have a chance to operate HF until last night, in the Sweetest Place in the World, Hershey, Pa.

I heard W4R working a pileup, and I got him on my fifth try, 21 MHz. 2.5 watts, with a 4-foot antenna on the mag mount on the car, behind the Day's Inn in Hershey.

A little later I heard two guys on 18.155 finishing up a QSO, and I called the strongest.one. He answered and gave me a 54, and later he said it was 58. The other guy he was talking to came back on a different antenna and gave me a 58. I said "Let me try 0.5 watts just for grins". When I called, two other guys (thinking the freq was clear) came on and started a QSO. My QRO friend said that we were doing a QRP test, please wait. They did, and said they also wanted to work the QRP station. When it was all over with, I had worked a dozen stations all over the USA, from Calif, Iowa, Florida, NC, Texas, Montana, and more (I logged them all but the stuff is still in the car).

And then to wrap it all up, I worked one more guy - a 1000 mile, 10 meter contact, in the dark, CW, giving me a 599. He had a beautiful antenna, and due to the law of reciprocity, I was using it too! My antenna was the Comet CA-UHV that I normally use on my own car, but I took it with a mag mount for this trip.

My wife came down to the car during the middle of it (she's also a ham, N1TMZ) and just had to watch with her jaw dropped to the floor. "You can do this with two watts and a 50 inch antenna on a mag mount???!!! Why did you need to buy the linear amp at the last hamfest???!!!" She's joking, of course (?)

The FT-817 is the Ham Operator's American Express card: Don't leave home without it!

73,
Dave
KZ1O

p.s. I found that when I had my 12-v cell phone charger plugged in, it produced a broadband S9 signal on HF. It must be a switcher. At first I thought it was something in the car, such as the engine's computer that was doing it.
