Eagle Creek padded cubes
Pete
I'm going to buy an ft-817 in the near future (probably about a week),
and am looking at different carrying arrangements. Saw a reference to the Eagle Creek Protect-It Pouch, which looks pretty good, but Eagle creek also makes several "padded cubes" as packing organizers. Seems like you could put the rig plus accessories in one or more of these, then stick that in a backpack, briefcase, luggage or whatever. Has anyone tried this? 73, Pete, NI9N |
Missing RX coverage on EU models
Johan Bodin
Hi All
I ordered my '817 a few weeks ago and I am still waiting like a kid on Xmas eve... When I asked the swedish dealer about possible delivery date, the answer was "we don't know..."... Sweden's priority seems to be between zero and nil at Yaesu :~( Anyway, I just realised that the european model of FT-817 does NOT cover 108-136MHz!? Too bad... I was really looking forward to listen to the air band... (It's legal to listen to any band here in Sweden.) Perhaps it's only a "solder ball" issue? Has anyone compared the solder ball configuration of US/European/Japanese versions? I'm not interested in extended TX coverage, I just want the air band RX. 73 Johan SM6LKM |

I am curious, did switching the NAR allow you to insert the SSB filter?

Is there a way to make the software low vision and blind friendly? Does the palm have sound capability or the ability to generate speech? With CAT software for the FT-817 operating in real time it could make the FT-817 usable to blind and low vision hams. If you can have these features in the program which can be turned on for blind and low vision users that would be great. That way it would meet our needs without being a bother for normally sighted hams who don't need it. Gene and Princess ----- Original Message -----

Unlike the CW filter, the SSB filter is always on once to set function 38.

I'm Geoff Wicks, the author of the Palm/PCR1000 PCRPilot program. As coincidence would have it I purchased an FT-817 at our local Hamfest a week ago (love the radio!) and have been contemplating a Palm program over the last few days. Any input and ideas on a control program would be appreciated. My aim when designing the PCRPilot was to put as much information on the screen without having to go through a series of menus to get at commonly used controls. This is the same philosophy that I intend using for the FT817 program. Regards, Geoff Wicks VK4KGL -----Original Message-----

I tried this with the one I bought (well not a surface mount cap) and

it made no difference at all. The reason was the hash is on both DC leads. The DC lead was actually coaxial, with negative the outer. Winding a lot of turns on to a ferrite ring close to the FT-817 plug made the biggest reduction in hash. Julian, G4ILO --- In FT817@y..., baranger1@a... wrote:

Re: Windows CE??

Any competent builder should be able to make an interface and test
that it doesn't put out any damaging voltages before connecting it to the radio. The cost saving probably isn't the main point of the exercise, either. Re: Press Waterman!!!!!!!
g4ilo@qsl.net
I don't think you will find any switch mode PSU that does not
generate hash when the radio is used with an antenna close by it (or mounted on it.) I got a SMPS from Maplin here in the UK and I found that the problem is the hash is on the outer (negative) lead, which is not connected to mains ground. It gets on to the radio via this, and from there to the antenna. Two ways I found to reduce it were a) to ground the radio to a suitable ground such as a central heating radiator, and b) when splicing on the 817 connector, to wind a great many turns of the power cord on to a ferrite ring such as is used for RF breakthrough prevention. But it still isn't as quiet as a transformer-based PSU. It's perfect when used with an outdoor antenna, however. Julian, G4ILO --- In FT817@y..., John Lewitzky <johnl@P...> wrote: Hi everyone,to generate a good amount of RF hash. Has anyone found a 2A wall warttype transformer that works with the 817 without the hash ? |

Re: Voltage vs. Power out
Johan Bodin
Hi all,
Warning! Connecting NiCd batteries in parallel is definately a no-no! Even without load, the charge can start bouncing between the battery packs, sometimes leading to huge currents. I have seen this strange behavior myself when a friend of mine put two NiCd cells in a bicycle light that was designed for two alkaline cells in parallel. The bike was left overnight and the next morning the battery holder was molten down! It's a completely different story with lead-acid batteries. They don't exhibit this strange "charge bouncing effect". They can used in parallel (assuming equal batteries!), even during charging since they are charged with constant voltage. 73 Johan, SM6LKM |

Hi
In the process at deciding which rig to buy, FT100D or FT817, i have found op. manuals and schematics of the Ft817 in the egroup for FT817. Do these items exist for the FT100D in downloadable form somewhere? best regards Lars OZ1HMN -------------------------- Myrthu Net: www.myrthu.net Helle & Lars Myrthu Rasmussen |

Re: CAT CTCSS programming info & Cloning Process
Bob,
Thanks for posting the info on the CTCSS Tones. From your posts I gather that you are producing FT Basic at cost/a loss to yourself. And are doing it to further the 817 community. Would you be willing to share what you have found out about the cloning process so that as a group we can tackle the Palm and Linux interfaces to the radio? I am currently working with another individual to develop a LGPL'ed Linux/C++ cloning and CAT class interface to the 817. 72/73, Bryan - k0emt |
Neat riser stand for FT817
jerrys@execpc.com
I got my FT817 at Dayton and finally put it on the air yesterday
(6/2). Anyway, the rig sitting flat against a table just doesn't work for me.....too hard to see the display and get at the buttons. I was at ACE Hardware today and saw a 4 inch paint roller with a matching size tray. If you turn the tray over, cut off the back half plus remove the bubble or hump in the back you wind up with a nice black, heavy vinyl, riser stand for the FT817. It is about 1.25 inches in the back and 1.75 inches in the front. The width is perfect at about 5.25 inches where the rig sits and 6 inches at the base where it meets the desk. I finshed off the cut edges with my dremel tool and it looks pretty good but I think I will spray mine with black enamel. The open tray cavity under the FT817 fits the neat little yellow FT817 book from VE3AYR or Palm Paddles, etc. Also, if you turn the finished tray over the 817 fits right inside of it. This will be handy for carrying both inside of another bag or pouch. I will use the Yaesu plastic bag or a bubble wrap bag on the 817 first though. The tray would add some protection for the rig while traveling. If interested the tray roller I purchased from ACE Hardware is called the Speed Roller kit and has a UPC label code of 44359 00500. I'm sure most paint trays for 4 in. rollers would be very similar. Just thought I'd share for those interested. 73 Jerry N9AW |
