Comments on the Outback/Outreach combination

Hi Guys (& Gals!):

I've been a member of this list almost from the start, and have been
reading the comments about the Outbacker & Outreach. I have had this
combination as my "portable - take anywhere" system since they first
came out. I have used it at our Radio Club's Field Day site for
several years first for the 6-Meter VHF station and then for the HF
Digital station. I even operated a 1B station one year with it. I
am not an '817 owner YET(Think I'll wait for the -D model!), but have
operated some QRP on it. I LOVE THIS ANTENNA!! Although you
probably wouldn't want to go take it hiking, it would work great for
a weekend trip to the beach, or to the park, etc. I put Hustler
Quick-Disconnects on mine, so I can also use my Perth-Plus for 6/2
meters. Yes, it is a little on the expensive side, but a well-made
quality product that will perform and will last. 'Nuff said...

Re: MP-1 / AP-10A / ATX (3/8-24 hardware MP-1 mount)

Thanks for anwering all the questions about the AP-10A, Barry!
The AP-10A coil and its hardware would be useful piece parts that
could be mixed and matched with other antenna parts, after a little
machine work making some adapters.
*** True.

Looks like the AP-10A makes an efficient fixed portable antenna, as
it was intended. I guess for those of us who want a single travel
antenna which can fullfull both mobile and portable requirements, the
stock AP-10A might not be quite as well suited.

*** Seems to work well for me. Doesn't seem to be very fussy in
tuning as long as I have my 259B along. I guess you could adapt the
AP-10A for mobile use, but I would rather use something else.

For the versatility that the MP-1 and its FT-817 bracket provides
with fixed portable, mobile, and pedestrian mobile use... I have a
hunch the MP-1 would still be my choice when packing light for a
trip... especially for rental cars and pedestrian.

*** Under those conditions, I would agree.

Speaking of "packing light"... I've recently been using the new ATX
with the 3/8-24 threads for those times when I travel with an
absolute minimum size package. Although the efficiency of the ATX is
not as good as either the MP-1 or the AP10A, I've managed to make
some Pedestrian Mobile SSB QSOs on 18MHz~21MHz with the ATX and the
FT-817. On 7, 10, 14MHz, I have only made CW contacts... SSB 5W just
doesn't cut it there with this combo. The ATX (3/8-24) using the MP-
1 mount on the FT-817 is a much more durable combination for
pedestian use than my "old" ATX BNC.

*** Interesting.

Has anybody found a 2 amp wallwart style supply that works with the 817?
I am going crazy looking for a "NON- SWITCHING" supply that is in the
style of a wallwart.

YES! It's not as small as a laptop supply ( it is very compact ) but it
works well, 2A and excellent regulation.

Contact www.tandmelectronics.com for the phone number. It may not be on
their online catalog

I just found the same supply for half the price in the MCM catalog

I am very pleased with it ( both the catalog and the supply )

No Tx Power or Tx Audio

Just some info...

Purchased a new FT 817 @ Dayton this year. I found extremely low Tx
power & Tx audio only in the USB & LSB modes (all bands & both front
and rear antenna). Checked SWR, changed from internal battery to
external 12v, changed various power levels.....no difference.

Did a reset, everything is OK now. hmmmmm

New FT-817

FWIW, I got around to opening the FT-817 I purchased at Dayton
(shipped to my home) today and noted two things.

First, the ferrite bead is now part of the accessories.

Second, the 7240 kHz birdie is even louder than on my old 817.

My first 817 is from Lot 03 (first group into the US) and the new one
is from Lot 21.

If you mean a "cellular" headphone ( and I am sure you do ) I have been
thinking this one over, especially for bicycle use. The only problem is
there is no headphone audio for receive present on the modular socket. Well,
2 solutions come to mind: 1 would be an ugly 2 connector idea, where the mic
and headphone each plug in, or the other would be either multiplexing the
receive audio onto an otherwise unused pin during receive such as MIC GND,
PTT or even riding on the +5v line.

For your consideration, the wires are as follows: Looking INTO the jack with
the lock tab DOWN:

1 Down
2 Up
3 +5
4 MIC GND
5 Mic
6 PTT
7 GND
8 Fast

Thoughts?

I don't characterise the two plug adapter as particularly ugly,
myself. Does anyone know if the up/down/fast functions are contact
closures to ground, or something else?

Bicycle mobile was what kicked my thinking in this area, since
behind-the-head headsets, with noise-cancelling mikes are readily
available. I feel uncomfortable about modifying my helmet for an
over-the-top headset. A PTT box, perhaps with the other functions
available also, that would velcro to the handlebars would also be the
place where the headset would attach. Very convenient for
dismounting.

The BLT tuner is available...I just built one, nice kit....with a ribbon
wire feeder and mini dipole i was able to work several states on 10,15,17
meters (ssb) on a quick test in my back yard with the dipole hanging from a
tree 8 feet off the ground. the tuner is very small and has a neat tuneup
led. you will like it.....thanks ,bill wb2iwc

SuperComm anyone?

Anbody else going to SuperComm in Atlanta this week? It's a
telecommunications trade show, for those who don't know. We could
hook up for a malted/distilled beverage (or three) and swap radio
stories. I'm gonna give "Hotel-Room-Portable" a shot again with the
FT-817, though I generally don't have much luck. Maybe I'll get lucky
and get a high room with a window that opens, for a change...

CAT CTCSS programming info

The user guide is less than helpful when it comes to knowing
how to send a CTCSS Tone to the FT-817.

The Opcode command chart lists:

CTCSS Tone P1 P2 * * 0B P1~P2: CTCSS Tone Frequency (Note 1)

When you look at Note 1: CTCSS Tone, it is just a table of CTCSS
tones, with no reference to P1 or P2.

What is needed in P1 and P2 are the numerics shown in the table, as
four-bit nibbles with leading zeros if required. e.g.

for a tone of 67.0 you need P1 as &H06 and P2 as &H70
179.9 P1 &H17 P2 &H99

and so on.

Hope this is of help to some. Remember that this just sets the
tone for the band you are currently in. To activate it you need
to be in FM and issue the CTCSS/DCS mode command 0A with the
required parameter P1.

Bob G4HFQ

P.S. Although I have not programmed DCS codes from the PC I rather
suspect a similar approach would work.

I just got my AD-1YM adapter and have hooked up my Heil Pro-5 and it
works fine. I am a little unhappy at the adapter gymnastics for the 1/4"
stero off the headset, but I added a Rat Shack right angle adapter (1/8
stereo to 1/8 stereo) so that mess lasy reasonably clean. I am cutting
the damned 1/4 mono for the PTT off and putting a 1/8 on it and making a
small puhbutton holder for that, of course there is always VOX, I
haven't tried that yet.

Subject: [FT817] headsets for FT817

Has anyone tried a telephone headset for the rig? They are small and
light.

And in the same vein, does anyone know where right-angle boots for
8-pin modular connectors can be obtained? I'd like to make an
adapater that lays alongside the radio.

I've used my old Heil BM-5 with the unit on VHF FM, and am told it
sounds fine. But even that's a bit large.

Yes, Yaesu has. It's compact, well built, inexpensive, and guaranteed to not
blow up your rig. It has the proper connectors on it. CT-62 is the model and
it's $30

FTBasic V1.4.604: CTCSS fix, and Status Indicators

V1.4.604 of FTBasic is available for download at

This version fixes a problem that crept in whereby an FT847
would be one tone off the desired tone. While I was at it I
added a few indicators to show the status of CTCSS - Enc, Dec
and frequency.

The indicators are the best guess that the program can make of
the state of the rig from 'knowledge' of what commands it has
sent. If you modify CTCSS state or tone from the rig then the
program does not know what's going on as, apart from the FT-100,
there is no feedback as to whether tones are on or whatever.

During testing the changes it became clear that the FT-817 is
a bit fussy about delays between commands when changing the
CTCSS state, so I have added a further fixed delay inside the
program. Any direct feedback to me on the success (or otherwise)
of this change would be appreciated.

Bob G4HFQ
