Recommend me a battery pack

My first /P session didn't go too well. I set up on a hillside overlooking the sea in North Devon with a JPC-12 vertical antenna. On 40m I coud hear plenty of stations around the UK, France and Germany. My CQ calls went unanswered and after an hour of monitoring QSOs around the country my NiMH battery had dropped from 10.2V to 7.6V and the radio switched off.

This was partly due to me using the loudspeaker, but clearly I need a better battery.

Is there a higher capacity battery pack that will fit in the compartment so I can still use the leather case?

Also any recommendations for a good set of portable headphones?

Yaesu provided the option, they clearly felt it was a good thing to
have. If you use the radio with WSJTX or similar then frequency
accuracy is important, as it is with satellites and listening to weak
beacons.

Some people only have one radio which they use for lots of different
purposes. It makes sense to get the best performance possible from it.

Re: TC1 board

Really why would one want a TCXO for the FT817/8, one uses the VFO to tune. And I would not commit my FT817 to any service that needs it, there are much better ways to go.

But to each their own.

Also note that the TCXO-9 originally had a TCXO module designed to run
from 5V, later TCXO-9s changed this to one intended to run from 3V but
5V tolerant. This has the disadvantage that the compensation is no
longer ideal. The old module part number is NTO-801, the new one is
TTS01.

I modified my TCXO-9 with a low-noise 3V LDO surface mount regulator
with some extra decoupling, it gave better warm-up and long-term
stability behaviour.

Hi Mike, yes I have a VNA for that purpose. Will be working /P later this week.

Re: TC1 board

Buy the original, despite its price, it's worth it.
The Chinese are a source of noise.

Opinions vary on whether the Chinese units are worth using. While it is
generally agreed upon that they do improve frequency stability,
apparently quite a few - if not most - of them visibly increase the
noise floor.

If I were you, I would either grab one of the really cheap Chinese
modules or go for the original TCXO-9. Unless, perhaps, if you can find
someone with exactly the same Chinese module who has thoroughly tested
it AND could test your unit once it has arrived.

The TCXO-9 is always out of stock here (UK) - NB people say to avoid eBay specials

WIMO have them:

Is it still possible to buy a TCXO? If so, where?

I did luck out I think -- it has a Collins Mechanical Filter in it -- the CW one as near as I can tell -- which seems to be worth about what I paid for the radio! Numbers on it are 526-8686-010. From what little I've read so far, that helps with some of the narrow digital modes as well -- correct?

Farren:

The TC-1 is the "standard" (not temperature-compensated) FT-817 crystal oscillator.

Re: A couple of basic questions

Thanks Al.

I did have an LDG tuner for this rig but as I wasn't planning any portable work at the time I sold it ...

I've bought a JPC-12 vertical which is <1.5:1 at 7MHz but higher on the higher frequencies.

Re: A couple of basic questions

The radio will alert you when the SWR is too high and it will back down during that condition.? I just found a tuner kit on Amazon for $35 and the enclosure for another $35.? It looks good so far but I haven't finished the wiring yet.? It appears to very close inside to the little elecraft auto tuner that I repaired for a friend a while back.? It says it will handle up to 100 watts while operating.? It is about the size of the battery pack.

It reverts to trickle charge rate, which is supposed to maintain the

A couple of basic questions

I've had my 817ND for a few months now but only operated as a fixed station. I plan to go /P soon and would like to know:

What is the maximum SWR the TX will tolerate without an ATU?

When charging the N¨¬MH battery pack what happens when the timer runs down to zero - does it stop charging?

Thanks,

Mike
