In search of unobtanium.

Mike Olbrisch

Good morning all.

I find myself in need of something that will probably be unobtanium. But if
I don't try, I certainly will not find it.

I need the original box with packing for the old Yaesu FT-101 series radio.
I know there are many other ways to ship it, but all would likely be more
costly. The original box and packing would be the best first choice.

Anyone got one collecting dust in the attic?

Thanks. All the best and happy mother's day where it applies.

Hello Oliveira

I'll try my best. I need to say that this will be radio stand alone, no
computer control, and since

you want to practice CW either with a hand key or paddle and the
internal keyer to the rig.

So plug in either the hand key wired as the manual says, or the paddle
also as the manual says.

While the radio is powered up select the CW mode by way of the buttons
on top of rig.

So while the rig is now set for CW and you press the key the rig will
transmit, and for practice you

don't want that for now so we will have to set the rig to just key the
side tone and keyer so you will

hear it. To do that you will need to press the F key momentarily, then
rotate the SEL knob to show the

under the screen [VOX,BK,KYR]. Make sure the BK does not have a > right
arrow showing. If the arrow

is visible the rig will TX and put your practice on the air. At this
time look at the KYR to turn on the keyer

press the C button to put a > arrow beside it. If you intend to practice
with a hand key then just leave the

C button alone.

This covered in the FT817 manual on page 30 for CW Transmission. But
that is to actually TX on the air

with the BK not activated it will not TX. To practice using the paddle
then it is covered on page 32. If you

have the FT-817ND the pages numbers will be close I think.

I hope this will help, and if you reply with some more information on
what you into practice I may be able

to provide more information.

From your signature line it implies that you may be a SWL and also a
HAM looking to advance. So with that

I assumed you may be looking to use a hand key to start with, and my
question on CW operation was with using

a hand key.

Good luck.

I did not try it, but a mono-stereo audio adapter might help. In theory, it would be possible to use either paddle as a straight key if the adapter is used. Just an idea to try.

Re: question on CW

Thank You Mike, that co-responds to my finding to on the keying of the rig. I guess my memory

is not so good, or it was on some other piece of gear. Quite possible that too. If I need to use a

straight key I usually plug in one as it is there and ready.

On Field day I will ask some of the usual Field day ops here at the local radio club to see what they

think. I expect it is easy. I plan on setting up on our patio and use a ground mounted vertical with

4 counter poise, with a solar panel to a large battery which technically will last all of the time I will

be operating but it will be putting some amount of power into the battery. I will be using the rig at

probably 2.5 watts, yes I know a glutton for punishment, but I will park on one frequency and take

a beating but I bet I can get some contacts on CW and at least get my points and bonus too.

Thanks, Greg.??

Yes, that could be one solution.? At least I know now I have a normal FT-818...a few responses indicate that at least some of them have smaller holes than the '817, though apparently not all.

This cable also looks potentially promising (though the postage to Canada is a bit pricey, as is often the case):

Re: question on CW

Hi Mike

Yes on all of that, I did try menu 19 to reverse the paddle but it didn't seem to help. But that may have

been before I rewired the paddle. I found the ground wire had come broken at the solder joint and

then tried again but forgot to go back to menu 19 and retry, so I will do that today sometime.

Thanks.

question on CW

HI Group

It has been quite a while since I have had my ft-817 on the air, moving and such

has gotten in the way. I hooked it up last night and see something I can't remember

exactly how to do, and I don't see it covered in the manual however I may have over

looked it.

In using a key paddle plugged in, and the menu for control of the keyer if you untick

the option to turn it on, but the BK ticked you can use it to practice CW with one of the

paddles to key the side tone or rig. I thought you keyed with the dah side, on mine it is

using the dit side, is this correct. Seems to me trying to send cw with your thumb would

be strange. Or is it supposed to key with either paddle side. I thought in the past I had

keyed as straight key using the paddle using my index finger.

Have you tried doing a full reset to factory?

A second question, was there any update or programing being done before the problem started?

Yeah - weird!

Not much help for the DO-IT-YOURSELF method. But I have found Yaesu repair
facility to be quick, do a great job, and at a reasonable cost. Frankly, if
you offered me that much to work on your radio I'd turn it down.

Hope you find that helpful, if option-2 becomes your choice.

Hi guys:

Before I send my radio off to Yaesu, I thought I'd run the problem by the
group.

My radio shows running all modes on each of the top buttons. In other words,
instead on selecting the bands, all buttons do the modes. I'm sorry that I
cannot put this in a simpler text. I did a total reset, but to no avail.

I believe it is a problem with the processor. I do not know how to get into
the hidden menu and would like to avoid that. I would be willing to do that
if someone would show me how.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: radio is weird

Seems more like a wiring problem, or perhaps an issue with one of the ICs.? Either way, a processor reset isn't going to fix it.
