Re: Clamps and RO sanders

Pau lLaPierre

Philip,

Gross-Stabil makes a clamp similar to the Bessey K model which I feel is a
more sturdy and better clamp. The jaws are all cast metal w/ removable pads
that cost less to replace than those on the Bessey. They also work w/ those
nifty support blocks that Bessey makes for setting up clamps to do all four
corners on doors while keeping everything level. If you can't find a source
for the Gross-Stabil clamps, let me know.

I tried both of the Festo RO machines, 5" and 6", at the recent Mid-Atlantic
Woodworking show in PA, and they are the best electric RO sanders I have
ever seen. Quiet, stable, and no vibration. You can turn on the sander, take
your hand off, and it will stay put. Also has a very efficient dust
collection system. All sorts of accessories(a la Felder) for doing contour
sanding, solid surface work, etc. Haven't gotten one yet, but when the last
payment on the current job comes in I'm getting the 6" model.

I would be interested in your thoughts on the Hoffman edge flushing
machine-despite the cost, I'm leaning in favor of that one over the Virutex.
I do a lot of rim-raised panels for architectural work and one of those
would save a lot of time over my present edge-flushing method.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Paul

Crosscut Fence???

Jason - these are terms that we old masters share from time to time with
you
cubs, all derived from a lifetime of trying to work a living, moving
material to within the tolerance of a STBCH...it's kind of a folklore
thing,
passing the traditions of the craft along to the next wave - Brian and I
will be happy to share any and all terminology with the list. Soon as we
think it up!

Let's face it, we're in it for the male-bonding, the jokes, the cutesy
terms, the secret handshake (you DON'T know the secret handshake??? Oh.
Sorry.), the facial hair, and, above all else, the plaid shirts. Cutting
wood has very little to do with it - notice how Brian's posts have
increased
and gotten sillier since actually receiving his machines? Remember when he
was Mr. "I'm so bummed 'cause I don't have anything to cut wood with and
I'm
so overbooked, and I'm so desperate to get to work"? Now it seems that
his
chair must've gotten stuck in the ruts in front of his computer desk,
since
he's probably become the leading poster of late (Just kidding, Brian!)...

BTW, the Hoffmann lipping planer arrived - at first blush it's beautifully
made, and has all the requisite cool-guy appeal - two-tone grey/orange
finish, and that amazing (how do they do it???)Swiss motor-sound that just
screams "I parted with a grand for this little handful! Nice, huh?"

How does it work? Hell, who cares? Actually it's nice, at least on
samples
I tried. Has a cutterhead guard that has to be manually retracted,
compared
to the Virutex's 2.5" of buck-naked angry spinning carbide. There's a
certain learning curve with keeping the outboard handle up in order to
keep
the cutterhead/base alignment, and there is no fence. Adjustment seems
easy
and very positive. It has to be used right-handed, bit of a PITA, but got
used to it quickly...

The $64k question - is it worth 2 1/2 times the cost of the Virutex?
Probably not for me, given the amount of use it'll get in my one-guy shop,
but I know I'll enjoy it anyhow!

Next items in the line of sight are a new R/O sander, and a whole batch of
those neat-o Bessey edging clamps...anybody out there have any hints?

Re: Open House Dress Code

Pau lLaPierre

Russell,
The clamping system you're looking for is made by JLT Clamps in
Poughkeepsie,NY. Their web site is www.jltlancasterclamps.com. They make a
heavy unit called the Panel Clamp in various sizes and configurations, and a
lighter version called the Redi-Clamp, geared towards small shops and
hobbyists, and it is this version that allows the clamps to hang down when
not in use. JLT has been around for a long time and is one of the mainstays
of the furniture and cabinetmaking industry when it comes to clamping.
Hope this helps,

Paul LaPierre

I looked in the past few Fine Woodworking magazines and did not see
the advertisement I recall from the past. I would have to look
through older issues but mine are elsewhere. I am pretty sure the
JDL clamps are a panel making "system". There are racks which the
clamps hang from. Put the panel to be glued in 2 or 3 of the clmaps
hanging on the rack. Tighten the clamps and then let the racks hand
down to make room for more panels.

Are JDL clamps the ones in the black and white ad in the back of
Fine

resemble Plano except hanging out horizontally instead of
vertically. I think I saw some of them sold at a molding factory
auction back in 1996.

A buddie of mine bought JDL. I saw them last night and they are
a
true
commercial grade clamp. There is one company out of Canada that
has
more
beef but the price goes way up. These JDL's were about the
price
of a
Bessey. They are 2.5 times the beef of a Bessey. They really
belong
hanging
off a rack for space but they lay down flat without any blocks,
like the
Bessey, due to the fact they use a twin beam design. The twin
beam
gives you
the lay flat feature and gives incrediable torque down power
without lateral
twist. Even the handle had twin hand grabs so you and the wife
can
squeeze
out all the glue. My friend has both Bessey and JDL but the big
stuff goes
to JDL.

Re: Renzetti Industries ZCI for Hammer

Pau lLaPierre

Paul,

I gotta say, RI, Uninc. does deliver. After receiving my original insert
from John, late delivery the fault of the USPS, not the manufacturing or
shipping departments, I ordered 2 more for my 7-41. That delivery, after
being sent, was in fact delivered the very next day! The recipient, however
was RI, and this time the delivery agency was UPS!! Still, despite the
screwup, it was remarkably quick service. Since I was planning on coming to
Fort Washington for the Mid-Atlantic show in April, I told John ( RI's CEO
and chief of product fulfillment) to hang on to them and I would pick them
up from him at the Felder booth where he would be moonlighting from his day
job and serving as a guest demonstrator and product flogger. He furthur
offered to pick up some Krispy Kreme donuts for me and have them at the show
(though not in the booth where their life expectancy could be measured in
nanoseconds--I did buy a diversionary dozen for the Felder guys as some
means of protection, however). At the end of the day I took delivery of my
ZCIs and 8 dz. Krispy Kremes. I know you Rochester folk have a new KK store
up there, but we are living in a KK donut desert here in the upper
Catskills. (I got hooked on these things in 1967 when I was in the Army in
VA. Only got re-acquainted with them when SWMBO and I were in the Shenandoah
Valley last summer.) KKs make Dunkin Donuts taste like a baker's mistake!
BTW, for anyone who is interested, Krispy Kremes freeze well and can be
brought back to almost perfect freshness in a micro-wave--defrost until just
warm, or until the icing starts to melt. This is a long way around to
providing a testimonial for Renzetti Industries, its service- oriented
staff, and its outstanding, albiet seriously underpriced ZCI. I gave John
$20.00 ea. for the inserts, w/o shipping, and I think that is still too
little.

May go to the Grand Opening on Sunday, and I so, hope to meet some of the
Feldervolk.

Regards,

Paul LaPierre

Quick review of the RI ZCI for Hammer.

First off, I ordered two and only rec'd one. Some lame excuse about
Catherine walking in and disturbing the cut on the second one (when in
doubt, blame SWMBO). I'm not sure if RI realizes they are now in the "real
world" of customer service, but I'm sorely disappointed they only shot 50%
on my first order.

Secondly, the lead time is atrocious. I waited several weeks beyond
promise
date. Once again, customers and orders of mine went begging as I waited
for
my ZCI to do any really meaningful work. I suggest RI cancel any and all
future vacations to ensure this does not happen again.

Finally it arrives. The insert itself had several scratches so I
immediately
felt I had been rooked. It was also sized for a slider several mm farther
away from the table than my own. I suggest RI join the real world and have
a
schematic of all possible customer machines at his disposal.

OK, OK, I can't keep this going.

The real review: The insert arrived, it was as close to dead nuts as I'd
expect from someone making a pattern from a machine in the warehouse. I
had
to file one curve to get the fit just right, all of 10 seconds, but keep
in
mind this thing has to be DEAD NUTS to screw into the housing. Relief cuts
on the underside were perfectly placed and machined. Material is great
stuff
but good golly miss molly I hope you are wearing full hazmat gear when you
cut it John - the dust is deadly. And John, no sweat nor hurry on the 2nd
one, put me at the end of the list if others are waiting.

This baby works as advertised and at a MUCH more than reasonable price.
Make
your own (if you value your time at $0) or I suggest you buy from RI if
they
continue to pursue this market.

I still can't believe a Hammer! configuration actually made it to
production
....

Hi Folks,

I'm just curious, how long does it take for your saw blades to come
to a complete stop once you've pressed the stop button? Mine takes
16-17 seconds using a 12" blade, and it coasts to a gradual
stop. I was thinkin' my machine would have a brake that would kick in
quickly and bring the blade to an abrupt hault. Is there an
aftermarket brake I could fit to my machine?

thanks, Jason G

What?! Every page counts! You should include pages 12-17 and re-scan
pages 18-24. Additionally, the specials listed on pages 4-7 are improperly
formatted and should not be scanned. This is not about trying to get more
photos of the 700 Series machines, this is about fairness!

Scott,
Thanks for the scans! The Christmas catalog hasn't made it to
the Tampa-St. Pete area as of yet either. As a new used-Felder owner
(a 6-31 Compact that probably belonged to a FOG member), I just
wanted to say thanks for the additional opportunity for my
credit-card company to make money.

As a Floridian, I am concerned about dimpled scans, and feel that
a rescan is the only fair way to resolve this important issue, not
just for me, but for FOGdom as a whole. My state Supreme Court will
be looking at the egroup rules and policies, and may have to take an
active role in rewriting them as they see fit. I believe six of the
seven Justices own Laguna products and the other owns a Unisaw.

Regards to all, and please forgive the attempt at satire.

Mark

Steve-

I have nothing but complaints about my LT 16 bandsaw. Initially, I
adjusted the bottom wheel (co-planarity) so the 1/8" blade would run
in the same position on both wheels. My biggest complaint is that
the
adjustment of the bottom wheel was blade dependent, big time. Every
different blade I put on I was constantly adjusting the bottom wheel
to get the blades to track properly.

I also think the blade guides are weird. The discs are so large you
can't tell where you are on the blade and a lot of times when I put
on
a different blade I'm getting sparks until I adjust the guides
differently. Why not rollers that travel alongside the blade?

I also think it's extraordinarily noisy. I knew I should have bought
the Felder bandsaw!!

powered up (again, I can get it adjusted fine for manual turning of
the
wheels).

What am I missing? It's not supposed to do that, right? Is
that
behavior a sign of under- or over-tensioning the blade? What else
should I
check?

Thanks... Steve

Hi Dan,

I have the LT16HD, which I believe is a bit beefier than the LT16. I
was contacted by Laguna and they said that the saw I have was one that they
received with the uncrowned wheels. While they offered to exchange the
wheels if I wanted, I'm having them send the crowning jig instead (seems
like less work). We'll see how it turns out.

As far as the noise, my reaction was the opposite. I put on the
headphones and prepared myself as I powered it up for the first time. I
couldn't believe how quiet it is. 3 HP, 220V and nice and quiet. The
Felder is remarkably quiet to me compared to my old Delta contractors saw.

I'm not giving up on the LT16HD at this point. While you haven't been
happy with your LT16, I've also heard from people that are happy with saws
from Laguna. I'm not trying to insult you or seem like a Laguna bigot, I'm
just giving them a fair chance.

So far, I've only tried the 1/4" blade. I can adjust the top
wheel such
that when I manually spin the wheel the blade rides with just the
teeth
hanging over the front edge of the wheel. However, as soon as I

Hi Jason

What machine do you have,?
Is it a Felder universal or a single machine?

If it is a universal, then time, the other operations stopping time, to see
if they differ and how much.
If it is just a saw unit on it own then your brake is definitely not
working.
It should only take around about 5 - 8 seconds.

I can advise if you wish I have been installing setting up and servicing
Felder M/Cs for over 2,1/2 years and have been a woodworking Engineer for
over 19years.

How old is your machine ?

You will find that the transformer has gone or the rectifier or both this
disables the brake but still allows you to work the machine.

Are you running your machine via a Phase converter If so then it is wired in
incorrectly there is an artificial Phase on the Brake circuit.

HOPE to be of some HELP

Best regards TONY LATHAM :)
WOODWORKING ENGINEER.

Subject: New machine delivery

Received my cf-41 yesterday. Still remembering the home delivery
experience of a bf-26 twelve years ago and some recent horror shows
from fellow fog members, I opted to pick up the new machine at the
freight terminal. I hired a flatbed auto transport and accompanied
the driver to the terminal about 60 miles from home. Felder pallet
was on and secured within 20 minutes.

When we got home I thought the best I could do was slide the pallet
onto my driveway and rent a pallet jack to go the last 10 feet and
through the double doors of my shop. Actually it was much simpler
than this. He was able to back the bed of the truck right up to the
doors and telescope the machine right inside. Now all I have to do
is install the mobility kit and roll the machine off the pallet.

From this experience I would highly reccommend this option. For me it
was cheaper than the freight companies residential delivery charge,
hassle free, and no sore muscles.

Now back to unpacking. So many pieces, so little time. I'll check in
again as the saga unfolds.

So What, we do not need the low temperatures, our beer has flavour, !!

Lucas also make Diesel Injectors, I would need something like that to
drink
Bud or Pabst

Dom,

Thanks for the info. and the offer to procure the Trend unit in the
UK. There's a good chance I'll take you up on that.

Some other posts here have indicated a lower cost unit from 3M than
the ones I had originally been looking at. I will investigate these
further and then make a decision if it merits the difficulty of
purchasing, paying for(different currencies, VAT, right-handed
steering...and all that) and shipping a Trend to the U.S.

My second barrage of emails to Trend have also gone unanswered, so
apparently they aren't interested in the difficulty of doing business
in the No. American market even though their unit might possibly be
priced (with dealer discounts) such that it would compete rather
nicely with the 3M line, which apparently is overpriced due to
virtually no competition.

My day-job is a computer professional, e-commerce development
engineer for streaming media, etc., so the idea crossed my mind of
setting up a virtual storefront to deal the Trend line in the U.S. if
the unit proved to be well-made (not like Lucas ignition systems in
British cars!!!), effective at removing dust, comfortable, and most
importantly available at a dealer discount that left room go compete
with 3M and Scott. I would like to have discussed this with the Trend
Machninery folks, but haven't been afforded the opportunity...hey, if
you carry any influence with them, please wake-em up and ask that
they respond to the crazy Yank who keeps sending them emails
(mikeoct51@...). Afterall, he just wants to be a customer, what a
novel concept....

Well, that' the end of my harrange on the Brit business methods...

From everything I've read, the war on dust in a small shop is three-
pronged:

1. Stop the dust at the source (good collection system) - I've
purchased an Oneida 1.5hp system for this. The Hammer is supposedly
good at "containing" the dust as well, so I'm doubly good there.

2. Filter the ambient air effectively to remove air-borne dust in
the 1-5 micron range - I'm looking at the JDS 750 for this. Price of
$239 seems reasonable.

3. Effective breathing apparatus - still considering the most
effective solution for the $$$$ here. Under $10 for the disposable
fibre masks, up to $30-40 for more exotic masks, $200-$300 for self-
powered low end and a whopping $500-$600 or more for the high end
self-powered or external sourced air.

To the extent you have good stuff for steps #1 and #2, perhaps you
don't need a real high-end solution to #3, perhaps something like the
dust-bee-gone at $35 would suffice??? On the other hand, you can not
have "too much" dust-free air. It's hard to know where to draw the
line, where there's diminishing returns on incremental expenditures.

Thanks, Mike Wells

Hi Mike
As far as I'm concerned the Trend is A.o.k. or as we say over
here,simply spiffing.
Be glad to assist in ordering one for you. I can go direct to their
H.Q. Its only 5-6 miles away.
Used mine for some time now and no problems
Dom
