Dom,

Thanks for the info. and the offer to procure the Trend unit in the
UK. There's a good chance I'll take you up on that.

Some other posts here have indicated a lower cost unit from 3M than
the ones I had originally been looking at. I will investigate these
further and then make a decision if it merits the difficulty of
purchasing, paying for(different currencies, VAT, right-handed
steering...and all that) and shipping a Trend to the U.S.

My second barrage of emails to Trend have also gone unanswered, so
apparently they aren't interested in the difficulty of doing business
in the No. American market even though their unit might possibly be
priced (with dealer discounts) such that it would compete rather
nicely with the 3M line, which apparently is overpriced due to
virtually no competition.

My day-job is a computer professional, e-commerce development
engineer for streaming media, etc., so the idea crossed my mind of
setting up a virtual storefront to deal the Trend line in the U.S. if
the unit proved to be well-made (not like Lucas ignition systems in
British cars!!!), effective at removing dust, comfortable, and most
importantly available at a dealer discount that left room go compete
with 3M and Scott. I would like to have discussed this with the Trend
Machninery folks, but haven't been afforded the opportunity...hey, if
you carry any influence with them, please wake-em up and ask that
they respond to the crazy Yank who keeps sending them emails
(mikeoct51@...). Afterall, he just wants to be a customer, what a
novel concept....

Well, that' the end of my harrange on the Brit business methods...

From everything I've read, the war on dust in a small shop is three-
pronged:

1. Stop the dust at the source (good collection system) - I've
purchased an Oneida 1.5hp system for this. The Hammer is supposedly
good at "containing" the dust as well, so I'm doubly good there.

2. Filter the ambient air effectively to remove air-borne dust in
the 1-5 micron range - I'm looking at the JDS 750 for this. Price of
$239 seems reasonable.

3. Effective breathing apparatus - still considering the most
effective solution for the $$$$ here. Under $10 for the disposable
fibre masks, up to $30-40 for more exotic masks, $200-$300 for self-
powered low end and a whopping $500-$600 or more for the high end
self-powered or external sourced air.

To the extent you have good stuff for steps #1 and #2, perhaps you
don't need a real high-end solution to #3, perhaps something like the
dust-bee-gone at $35 would suffice??? On the other hand, you can not
have "too much" dust-free air. It's hard to know where to draw the
line, where there's diminishing returns on incremental expenditures.

Thanks, Mike Wells

Hi Mike
As far as I'm concerned the Trend is A.o.k. or as we say over
here,simply spiffing.
Be glad to assist in ordering one for you. I can go direct to their
H.Q. Its only 5-6 miles away.
Used mine for some time now and no problems
Dom
