Re: Mustang brake upgrade

We are not doing a booster at this point.

Jay, A word of WARNING. IF your friend chooses to install a factory booster setup, they MUST also make sure they get the matching booster bracket and linkage. A Midland Booster MUST have the MATCHING Midland specific mounting brackets and linkage. A Bendix Booster MUST have the MATCHING Bendix specific mounting brackets and linkage. The bolt pattern spacing is different between the Midland and Bendix boosters by about an inch. The advantage of getting the Bendix booster is (at least the last time I checked) it is available over the counter at local auto parts stores (they may need to order it in) without a core (though a core charge might be required). Where as the Midland booster MUST be sent out to be rebuilt and a core IS required.

This said, I DON'T know IF the Booster Brackets and linkage are interchangeable between Fairlanes/Torinos and Mustangs/Cougars OR full size cars for that matter.

Re: Mustang brake upgrade

Hello Jay ! ! !?

I cannot recommend a vendor, I am certain most of them are pretty good as this
topic is decades old. But for me, I look for systems that use OEM parts so that I don't
have to rembember to look for (as example) Toyota calipers and Chevy Cavalier rotors
etc etc.?

I bought a 4 piston disc brake setup for my 63 wagon that used all factory hardware
and had no issues with it other than tweaking thing here and there.?

Jay,
? I've mainly used NPD, but would prefer going original parts if possible, so try West Coast Classic Cougar in Salem, Oregon. If you're going to do a swap, might as well put in a booster.

Linc, thanks for the input. Yes, I have a mig welder and am familiar with plug welding. I was just thinking of an alternative, because Ford had spot welds every 3-4 inches. I've read that Mercedes and BMW are building their cars with structural adhesive because the metals are so thin now, so thought it might save some time and effort.

Hello Steve,

First I have to say that you are awefully ambitious to do that work wthout ?a 'spot welder' if that
means you don't have a 'welder' at all. If you just mean you don't have a dedicated spot welder,
then you don't need that. Pop some holes with a drill or punch in your new panel and then fill
them with a mig welder. That is how the majority of the world does it.

As for panel bonding, nope Nope NOPE.. Not this guy. ?The are great and they work wonderful
for some amount of time, but they were never designed to last long term. ?In 2010 a shop that
was fixing my F350 told me my one bed side was going to have to be replaced. I knew their reputation
and told them "Sure, do it at long as you weld it 100%" ?They welded the top edge and the front
edge but used panel bond everywhere else and I was not happy. Five years later the back of the?
panel started flapping in the wind while driving. ?I had to scrape it all out, clay it up, and the spot
weld while doing heat mitigation to save the paint. ?To years later the filler panel that goes?
between the bed and bed site, that the tailgate hangs on, let go and my tailgate fell and hung
from the cables. Damaged my bedsite and tailgate.

Just weld it. ?That is where I stand.

When I was reading down through the comments section of that youtube video before seeing this email from Marty, the "Atkins" name was mentioned. Additionally one poster claims to know of a similar type collection of Shelbys and was going to attempt to email the poster/uploader of this this youtube video of Areo cars with the location of the Shelby collection.

I believe that this video was taken at Mike Atkins’s place.? I actually have been there and purchased a project car from him.

?

Great guy, great family.? Unfortunately, Mike passed away a couple of years ago.? His son Brandon is currently one of the people in charge of his collection.

?

Thanks,

Carl.

Re: Nice Collection of Cars

Yes it is the Atkins warehouse in Tennessee. As Carl said Mike passed away from Covid. Brandon (son) is the caretaker. For you old timers a lot of the Talladega’s came from Steve Stafferi back in the late 80’s

Re: 69 Cobra formal roof door trim

Jim,

You are very lucky and way cool to have tracked down and been able to contact ALL the previous owners as well as them all remembering the car's history. Based on what you found out and said, I would say the car really has 42K original miles on the clock. Make sure you document ALL the previous owners names, addresses/phone #s, the dates and times you contacted them along with what each one said/told you. Did the owner that restored it detail all/everything hat was done to it/he did to it for the restoration, like replacement parts and so on?

David,

Thanks. My car was produced January 28th 69. I tracked down and talked to all four previous owners prior to myself. The orginal owner had it for five years before selling it to a co-worker in 74. Second owner said it never ran correctly, mostly not driving ?it, and stored it in a barn before selling it to the third owner in 81. Third owner owned it briefly before flipping to the fourth owner in 82. He eventually restored the car in the early 90’s.?
?
Long explanation for believing the car was orginal throughout the whole ownership timeline. The thermactor system along with the belt was in the trunk and the odometer had 41k. The car had very little rust and the car was in the St Louis and Illinois (notorious for rusty vehicles based on the chemical they used for snow) for the time of the first two owners.?

Jim, my early build (Nov '67) '68 Fairlane 500 4 door, Dark Blue, has the chrome metal trim right above the door panel. Then above the trim is the metal top of the door painted the light blue of the interior. The seat covers/interior are/is 2 tone blue. Attached is a pic. Don't know if this helps any.

I am (back to) trying to verify if 69 Cobra formal roofs came with the chrome door strip above the door panels.

I first noticed in 2002 at the Fairlane Nationals in St Louis that mine and Jon Huntley did not have the chrome trim but the other (sportsroof) Cobras did. I addressed the question shortly after in an email with Jon.

He stated that the Cobra formal roofs were based off the base Fairlane 65A body style. The Cobra sportsroof were based on Fairlane 500 63B body style. The reasoning (obviously) the two Cobra versions weren’t based off the same model was the base Fairlane wasn’t offered as a sportsroof model.

Based on that email it was my understanding the base Fairlane didn’t have the chrome trim and the Fairlane 500 did. Even though the sportsroof Cobras didn't use the Fairlane 500 standard door panels (inheriting the base Fairlane door panels instead) the chrome strip remained.

Ford literature also shows the chrome strip on Fairlane 500’s and not on the base Fairlane. Pictures attached.

I asked Warren Mansfield (FCA 68-69 tech editor) the question. He he wasn’t sure although his formal roof Cobra (which he bought new) did come with the trim. I follow the major car auctions and the Cobras that are sold. The majority of the formal roofs have the trim although that doesn’t mean they originally came with them. Larry Slevin’s twenty thousand mile triple black formal roof car (since sold) that was featured many times in articles and a multiple award winner does not have the trim.

I was also told that Kansas City built formal roof Cobras did not come with the trim but Atlanta built cars did. So I am really confused. To add to the mystery I am adding some pictures from a 69 Fairlane that was sold this year at Meecum. Sold as an all orginal car with fourteen thousand miles. It has the chrome trim.

I am not trying to make my car a concourse correct car. At this point I am more curious than anything. Any insights and/or the answer would be appreciated.

Hey Carl,

I think this is the guy I spoke with back in the 90's. At the time I was researching the 11 428 CJ convertibles
that were made in 1968. ?I only ever found two, confirmed 7 destroyed, and there were two missing from my
research. ?If this is the same guy, he had one. I spoke with him at length on several occasions educating him
about the car. ?He told me after a month that he was going to keep it for his wife. ?

? The reason I think it is the same guy was because he told me he only collected aero cars and at that time
he told me what he had, and it seems like the same collection. ?But in the video, there was NO convertible, so
I am curious where it went. ?Based on my notes, the car was triple white with a 428CJ and C6 automatic. I never
got him to give me the door tag information, so I have no idea if it had a special order DSO or anything. But
he said the door tag matched the way the car was. So it wasn't a pace car, although he thought it might have
been when we first talked. But it had the wrong interior for that.

Anyway, that is my interest.?

Thanks for sharing your information
