Will, Nothing wrong with spacers when done right. I had to use spacers on my '68 Torino because the new NON-concourse control arm ball joint domes burried themselves into the tire sidewall preventing wheel spin. Wheel spacers and longer wheel studs fixed that problem. I have been running the spacers for years with no problems.
Jay, A word of WARNING. IF your friend chooses to install a factory booster setup, they MUST also make sure they get the matching booster bracket and linkage. A Midland Booster MUST have the MATCHING Midland specific mounting brackets and linkage. A Bendix Booster MUST have the MATCHING Bendix specific mounting brackets and linkage. The bolt pattern spacing is different between the Midland and Bendix boosters by about an inch. The advantage of getting the Bendix booster is (at least the last time I checked) it is available over the counter at local auto parts stores (they may need to order it in) without a core (though a core charge might be required). Where as the Midland booster MUST be sent out to be rebuilt and a core IS required.
This said, I DON'T know IF the Booster Brackets and linkage are interchangeable between Fairlanes/Torinos and Mustangs/Cougars OR full size cars for that matter.

When I'd tighten the lug nuts, the centers would get knocked off. Couldn't change the dust cap because of the end of the spindle. Had no choice but to use spacers.?

Yeah, it helped I was working at NAPA at the time too. Saved money with my discount. I did have a minor issue with my wheels. I'm running magnum 500's and the dust cap would knock off the center cap. I ended up using spacers for clearance. I know, not the best option, but it helped fix the problem.?

That's what I ended up doing on my 68 Fairlane. It was a non power drum brake car too, didn't go with a? booster. Had to use Granada tie rod ends and switched master to a Maverick one. The best decision I ever made on the car. I was looking at the disc brake kits out there, but saved about $400 doing it the way I did.
