You do not take in consideration amount of vibration that comes on that
fiberglass when you drive 65 MPH with that rack loaded and that can create a
lot more problems than what you are talking

In addition to being press in, it has an electrical (at least my '93 has it..) connector for the heated mirror. I'm sure the bits and pieces will become apparent to you as you delve into the repair.

I don't know what year your ev is, but mine is a 99. My wife smashed the
passenger side mirror. The mirror just snaps into place so we ordered a new
part (about $95 with the 10% vw club discount)
