Re: EV5 timing belt

There is no mention of it in the owner's manual except to "check the condition of the belt" at something like 60,000 miles. I asked the FLVWD about replacing the timing belt at 70,000 miles and they said to not worry about it. They said it will go for more than 100,000 miles, and if it does break, nothing will be damaged. I've had timing belts in other VWs break and nothing happen, but they were not EVs which are a different bird altogether. . . Todd |

Re: '99 MV vs. GL
David,
The rear facing seats and fold out table get constant use in our '93 MV. Of course mostly by my kids but I do enjoy sitting on the rear bench on the table side. The rear facing seats are a problem for some adults. The best deal is the newest MV out in Germany. The center seats are modular and can be installed either facing forward or back. maybe we'll see it on the 2000 MV. Ron |
Re: '93 GL..rear side windows and/or roof vent?
Bill,
Just a couple comments to consider... 1- The MV and MV Weekender have different slider windows. The difference is the Weekender has screens. 2- I cannot keep the sliders open on my MV when moving without getting an annoying air noise that no one can take very long. Of course they are great when stationary. Ron |

My 95 EVC was a VW of America repurchase vehicle. The EVC was from So.

California and was repurchased by VW in March of 1998 with 37,000 miles. I purchased the van in May 1998. The reason given was problems with the camping equipment and the power windows. It was my experience that VW has extensive paperwork on a vehicle that it repurchases. The dealer I purchased it from provided me with all the documentation: Why it was repurchased and what work VW had done on the van. The van also came with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. We now have 68,000 miles on the EVC and have had no major problems. Our experience with the camping equipment has been similar to others on the list. If the salesman story is a repurchase he should be able to provide some documentation for you. Kevin Scottsdale, AZ -----Original Message----- |

is OK.) I bought a 95EVC with 90,000 miles on it. Everyone told me not to do it. We have had no major problems and we saved about $5k. You may have some minor problems like we all do, but the engine in these things are great. If it checks out OK, what is the problem? -----Original Message-----

Would it be possible to wire the rear fan in such a way that theI had this same thought...seems to me that all a person would have to do is intercept the hot wire that turns the compressor on and put a switch in there. Then, when the regular A/C controls are moved into a position where the rear vents should activate, they still will...then all you'd have to do is turn the actual compressor on with the separate switch. I have tried to get a sliding rear window, but my dealer claims it isI'm pretty sure any automobile window shop, and/or a body shop, could swap out the side/rear windows no problem...either buying a window directly from VW, or from a junkyard. -- Bill Salopek ICQ: 20536257 No worries... Maine Trip Report
Zaborenko, Alex, NNAD
My wife and I just came back from taking my parents and brother on a 1500
mile camping trip in Maine. Trying to camp with the middle bench seat is an adventure to say the least. My wife, 2 pugs, and I slept in a tent on a new air mattress that decided that 4 hours was as long as it was going to hold enough air to be comfortable. We were forced to refill it in the middle of every night. My parents slept on the top bunk since they felt it was roomier than the bottom and gave better ventilation. My brother slept on the bottom bed. To accomplish this we flipped the middle bench around, took it off the tracks and rolled it towards the front seats which were pushed forward. This gave enough room for the bed to fold out and be able to sit in the bench at the same time. We were forced to use picnic benches every time we ate, something we had never done with just the 2 of us camping. We definitely missed the convenience of being able to ignore our surroundings to eat a meal or go to the bathroom (there wasn't enough room for a portapotty with everyone's crap) All in all it was a good time as we saw York beach, Ogonquit, Kennebunkport beach, Camden, Pemaquid Point, Acadia and the unavoidable LL Bean stop in Freeport. It was nice weather barring the fog that kept coming in that blocked many of the nice views from Acadia. However, we did hear the Thunder in Thunder Hole for the first time in 5 visits. Curt,
What do you need all those troubles for? It may look like you'll save some $$ now, but have a really good chance to get in a lot more expensive troubles later (they will tell you whatever you want, they will not loose any $$). On top of that not many people have enough experience with EV, so even minor problem sometimes turns into a real pain. Just forget about it and go after brand new one. Severin. There is a service in the Internet where, for $15 or so you can get the vehicle's history, provided you can give them the VIN. Ask the dealer for the VIN. If he hesitates, don't buy the car! EVs have enough problems as it is, you don't want any more! I think that your Department of Motor Vehicles can give you the same info for less money. I would try to find out the name of the previous owner and contact him. Remember, you are dealing with a car salesman. One commanding officer in the AF once said, if he had a brother who is a used car salesman, and he was up for his polygraph and renewal of his security clearance, he would tell them that his brother is in jail, for fear of loosing his security clearance. You could try contacting VW, but they have never been helpful. 1-800-Drive-VW. |
