radiator fan

Hello,
On a recent trip, I noticed that my temp gage was climbing. Upon
stopping, I further noticed that my radiator fan did not kick in.
The
fan has not come on since. I checked the fuses, they are fine. Not
sure what this could be. Any suggestions?

Just thought I would pass along to you that the cheapest price I have found
for the Bentley is at Booksamillion.com. $47 cheaper than Amazon.com.

I bought my 93 EV MV last weekend, and travelled 200 miles to get it. I
will be getting the repair manual soon.

Driver's side fan runs (both speeds).
Passenger side fan does not run.

The fuses are good.
My VW guru suggested checking the resistors behind the panel under the
left headlight. I did - both are crumbling, but still passing electrons.
I'm going to check on replacing this assembly.

I may have to bite the bullet and buy a Bentley manual - I can only guess
at the wiring without one.

I still haven't figured out where the actual thermoswitch is that
regulates fan operation.

The louvers are opening properly on the back of the fan housing.

How can I test just the fan motor?
Can I just connect the two terminals on the fan to a battery?
What do the big resistors do?

Based on your collective advice, I ordered Bilstein shocks for my van. I
ordered them through shox.com and had them installed at an independent
shop
here in Boulder (Verner's). I was worried that the ride would be overly
stiff
but found it to be just fine on the ride home from the shop.

Shocks: +/- $86 each.
Installation: $163 -- all four.
Nice to know that I saved $163 when I installed the shocks myself. I find it
hard to believe that a shop would charge that much for an hour or 1 1/2
hours of labor. I spent no more than 20 mins on each shock. On the EV they
are really easy to change, for the rear you don't even have to lift the van.

Fiamma F45+ complete

For those of you wondering about the F45+ awning, I've successfully
install one on my 99 EVC.
Here's my observations and opinions.

Pros

1) It's very well made from extruded and cast aluminum, plastic, nylon
and rubber.

2) It's very easy to set up. One person about 5' tall can set it up in
about a minute. Really!

3) Despite it's weight, it's fairly compact. It doesn't increase the
height of the Van at all.

4) The finish matches the pop top, it keeps with the styling of the EVC.

Cons

1) It's expensive.

2) Installing it properly is not easy

3) It partially blocks access to tucking in the pop top

4) It's not as big as some awnings. 8'2" long and opens to 6' wide

This awning is not likely to be a hit with everyone, but I'm very
pleased and glad I went to the extra
trouble to getting one. For me it was the right choice, love it already.

Re: T4 Paradise

Tobi,
I walked into both the Colorado and the Missouri. I was very impressed with
the quality of the cabinetry in both. Of course the Missouri was the most
spacious but they both impressed me as being very roomy for a couple with a
child or two. Fitting in my family of five might be a bit tough. I believe
the Missouri offered the added feature of a full shower in the bathroom. The
Colorado was much nicer looking since it has the T4 front end. The Colorado
brochure shows sleeping space for four ( two on top front area and two on the
first level when the table is lowered).

Re: Fantastic Fans

Apparently only Winnebago knows why they installed off-size vents in
the EVC rather than the RV industry standard 14x14 size. Anyway,
rather than cut larger holes in my roof and ceiling, I installed a
MaxxAir TurboMax vent fan (www.maxxair.com -- available at Camping
World) on the roof and wired it to the existing ceiling light. It
works great, although others might have a problem with adding 10" in
height to the EVC (fortunately I already had a 8' garage door). The
installation took some improvisation, but nothing major. Email me
off the list if you'd like details.

Has
anyone else done this? I called Camping World to see if they could
do
this on my 2000 EVC, and they asked me too questions:

Is it a 14" opening?
Is there a power source by the opening?

I was looking at the same fan, but encountered the same problems.

EVC vent is rectangular. The Fantastic Fan is square.

Retrofitting the top of the poptop is relativly easy.
Retrofitting the bottom of the poptop(ie. ceiling) is complicated
since the ceiling is a molded plastic that is shaped for the
rectangular fan. The ceiling could be cut as well, but it would
require some creativity to cover it.

Yes - there is power located right beside it. The fan could be
wired
to the 12V ceiling light

I'm interersted to find a solution as well....

Re: VW Parts CD

I belong to the vanagon group too and have downloaded this CD. BE
FOREWARNED... it requires 1280 resolution on your monitor and is in
iso format (Adaptec CDR). You can download winimage from the same
site and extract it (with winimage, once downloaded) and then burn it
to CD. I had varied success getting it to work but eventually got it
to work. It takes some tinkering with if your running NT. 95/98 ran
it ok but I did experience some problems.

It might work just fine for you and it might not and require some
tinkering time. If you download one of the FTP programs they will
resume the downloading if you get cut off while downloading. That is
the best way to go. there is little documentation supporting the use
of all the methods and programs involved in this process. You should
be fairly competent in using the PC.

I do not recomend using the iso format to burn it to CD.

The T4 camper is great. I was in Europe for a year, just traveling with my
family, and had the opportunity to drive a 1998 California Joker for 8
months and put 45,000 Km on it. (it's interesting, the German / European
van is a California Joker, but the American/Candian is a Eurovan) When I
went over, I had shipped my '91 Westie and had fun driving and camping.
However, outside of Rome, while we were in a supermarket, someone stole the
van and just about everything we had (cameras, computers, children toys,
film, etc.) When we got back to our apartment in Germany, a local dealer
had a used '98 T4 California Joker for sale. What a van.

It has Camping-Gas 907 cylinder for the stove only. The refrig runs off of
12v, and can run for 4-5 days on the aux battery without draining it, and
keep a temp. of ~4C the whole time. The only change on the outside is the
electrical plug in.

It doesn't have a heater, but that could be easily added I'm sure. The
other nice features are the size, the same as a Weekender and the fact you
can get a TDI (diesel engine) with a 5 speed man. Transmission. Great power
(easily does 170Kmph cruising on the autobahn).

I wish they would import this model inside of the Winnie. Well, I could go
on and on....

Just a guess, but I get the same smell the first time I fire
up the house
furnace in the fall. I'll bet you are just burning off some dust
and/or
grease/oil. The amount of heat should not be that great - it's
virtually a
pilot light that heats the thermocouple. I can always feel the
warmth of
the flame and cooling coils coming up the back of the fridge, but
if
it
*really* seems excessive, maybe you could check the vents for
blockages.
