Re: Power Locks

Eckhard,
Sorry I can't help on the door locks since I never had this happen. Perhaps
your EV is upset with you? Maybe your eyes have been wandering too much with
passing SUV's and your EV is upset? Remember Herbie! ;-)

Re: low mileage 93's do exist...

Wade,
Nicely said. I enjoy all aspects of this list and would hate to see it
restricted to only a certain subjects. That being said, I did find the
average age thread a bit much but I just deleted what I didn't want to read.

Re: Console

For trips, I like to use a California Innovations soft pack cooler (Target).
Because it's soft it molds itself around the hand brake. It has a shoulder
strap folds flat so I can keep it in the van ready to use.

With a camper top I would like a little cooler that's sturdy enough to use as
a step to climb up.

For holding drinks I bought the VW under dash console ($80?). It was easy to
put in on my old 5 speed EV, a little tougher to get in front of the auto on
my current EV but once in place, I didn't need any screws to keep it there.

Steve, JC Whitney catalog list air bags for the rear of the EV.? Does anybody know anything about that as an option?? They claim you can raise and lower the EV when needed.

I checked with several suspension and parts dealers at the auto show in
Frankfurt. I was told that it couldn't be done. Something about the rear
end on the EV that made it too difficult to lift.

Plenty of kits to lower it though.

I'll keep you udated on the fog lights. They will be ready to ship within 2
weeks, but I don't have another shipment scheduled until the end of March. I
have asked to have these sent by Air Parcel Post. If they agree, I should
have them in about 3 weeks.

Re: Console

I bought a center console at Pep Boys. It has 4 cup holders and a lid
that lifts to allow storage to CD's, ect. I do have to move it out of
the way to swivel the chairs around for camping.

It was about $30 and they sell them for mini-vans, but it fits nicely
between the 2 seats.

Re: Console - inexpensive solution

I found a Coleman cooler that fits nicely between the 2 front seats.
You can still reach the emergency brake, but its much easier to slide
the cooler a bit lower/raise the brake handle than slide the cooler
back. Its a pretty tall cooler, the top comes about to the top of the
seats. You can flip the lid and use the back side with its 2 cup
holders. Can't remember what I paid for it, slightly less than ~$25 at
Walmart.

Re: Power Locks

Donald Gibbons

Yes, but in a vanagon, they have the exact same system.

These electric power locks have three wires that connect each device to
the other. I do not think there is a "master" unit, they all just
follow what the others do.

How they work: In each unit is a motor, gears and a contact wheel. When
you operate any lock you switch some contacts. This makes the motors in
all the other units run and make their comtact go into the same state.

But......
Sometimes a unit will have a motor freeze up with the contacts are
inbetween open and lock, it does not take much. Then all the locks will
either keep running forever, trying to find the place where the froze
one stopped, or it will cycle once and then stop, but in the same WRONG
state as the froze one, slightly inbetween open and locked.

To fix it you must find the froze or badly working unit. Most of the
time it is the one that causes the problem to happen, the system will
operate normally when operating from for example the passenger door.
But will screw up when operated from the drivers door. In any event you
will have to remove and open up the unit. Most of the time you will
find water or corrosion.Clean it up, some lube here and ther and then
put it back the way it was.

Re: Power Locks

Scott Douglas

Eckhard, I have had that happen to me and it seems that if the lock feels
any resistance it reverses and locks again. I sprayed wd40 on all locks and
everything that moved and then it worked ok again.

Just when I started to like my EV again--after the big transmission
"transplant"--it is starting to bug me again. Whenever I attempt to open
the passenger door (usually from the outside) the EV decides to lock the
doors. (I slightly pull on the handle when suddenly the power locks
engage). I have removed the door panel and attempted to
bend a few things in there, but nothing has worked thus far. Has anyone
experienced that? Any ideas how to fix it?
Thanks

Steve Lashley (Sklashley@...) sells a very nice console unit that mounts
on the floor in front of the shift lever -- it has an original equipment
look and fit. But... it doesn't work with the storage tray that Winnebago
has in the '97 EVC models on the bottom of the dash panel. Contact him for
further information.

Potable water is readily available from overhead hose supplies at most any
public or private campground. Even the National Park Service and Forest
Service are now providing them at most of their sites, along with easily
accessible grey water dump stations which you can pull right up to for
dumping your waste water.

Thanks for the responses,
I will try the bottle/s of coke after the mild bleach I have used is
diluted enough to see the effect.
I will continue to use the old faithful 5 gl plastic container with
hand pump, She (who must be obeyed) prefers it anyhow.
It is difficult to source and deliver potable water to the internal
14 gl.storage tank so I think it will be used more for washing etc.
The Melbourne city water is fine to start of a trip with although
probably chlorinated and certainly fluoridated, Once on the road you
have to keep an eye out for public access to taps as well as O'night
camp areas.
We had 2 5gl plastic containers for the vanagon, One for drinking
and the second for washing which was filled with anything including bore
water and you can see at a glance the amount held, I have never needed
to use water purifying tablets but have made the mistake of filling the
5 gl with a new hose and not checking for smell or bugs!
A large bottle of coke is worth a try, It certainly can clean old
copper coins, I have a 1956 coke (full) but that is held as an
investment.

Windshield Wipers

Eckhard Rolz

I have a strange problem with my wipers. They work fine on speed one or two,
but the interval setting causes strange problems. Instead of sweeping across
the window and then returning, the wipers stop about 1/3 of the way, right in
my field of vision, and then they wait for the next impulse which moves them
all the way across and a few inches back. Finally on the third impulse they go
back. I have replaced the relay, but no improvement.
Strangely though, sometimes they work fine, but usually after I have
driven on the freeway for a few minutes. Has anyone ever experienced this
problem?
Thanks

On the subject of wheelchair lifts and the EV, VW touted a program back in
92/93 that you could get an EV and put a lift in for handicap access (I
don't know what the fine details are). More recently, our esteemed former
listmemeber Dr. xxxxx had a child with a disability and specifically
purchased the EV for the purpose of transporting said child. Unfortunately,
he had greater problems that we could not help him with...

I've taken a bit of a risk and ordered 15 sets of Hella EV foglights.
I'll
know next week when the shipment is due to arrive and what the costs will
be.

I expect the set to run around $200 to $225. I think these fit all years,
though the description is a little fuzzy.

I'll post the details next week.
