Re: Power Locks

Donald Gibbons

Yes, but in a vanagon, they have the exact same system.

These electric power locks have three wires that connect each device to
the other. I do not think there is a "master" unit, they all just
follow what the others do.

How they work: In each unit is a motor, gears and a contact wheel. When
you operate any lock you switch some contacts. This makes the motors in
all the other units run and make their comtact go into the same state.

But......
Sometimes a unit will have a motor freeze up with the contacts are
inbetween open and lock, it does not take much. Then all the locks will
either keep running forever, trying to find the place where the froze
one stopped, or it will cycle once and then stop, but in the same WRONG
state as the froze one, slightly inbetween open and locked.

To fix it you must find the froze or badly working unit. Most of the
time it is the one that causes the problem to happen, the system will
operate normally when operating from for example the passenger door.
But will screw up when operated from the drivers door. In any event you
will have to remove and open up the unit. Most of the time you will
find water or corrosion.Clean it up, some lube here and ther and then
put it back the way it was.
