we were not supposed to get an EVC until 2001 since they have only been produced in odd years for 93, 95, 97 and 99. I am shocked that we will have a 2000 EVC. Let me guess, it's white, right? -----Original Message-----

Re: EV: VW Parts Distribution / Do you really want a VW?
I appreciate your input but to think that a company like Toyota appreciates
it's customers and if the same thing happened to one of their cars that they might even reimburse you...thats just crazy . Moreover saying that you "perfer a reliable and cost efficient car" implies that the rest of us dont. We all want reliable and cost efficent cars but unfortunately not every single car or product a company offers will always be rock solid reliable. if an auto manufacturer offered to fix eveything that went wrong with a car 1 year after the warranty was up anyways, they would lose a ton of money and i think that if you were the president of the 3rd largest automaker in the world you might find it difficult to give up that kind of cash. But i like the VW "s because i have found them to be reliable and appealing to the eye and they , to me are very useful and enjoyable cars with a lot of personaliy and that is something the Japanese automakers definately dont have ( personality) as it seems everything they make is a copy of something else. I still appreciate all the help and guidance that your experience can give me because at one time you did own a Vw at one time. chris |

that reason. Only once have I had a problem getting a part. It too was a 6 week item, and was an injector pump for a 15 year old turbo diesel. I found that most of the problems are caused by mechanics that don't know what they are doing, and cause more damage than they fix, all at your expense and the vehicle manufactures reputation. The only time I took my EV to the dealer was to get an alignment. The repair invoice said "check the ball joints before doing an alignment." Two weeks later, after a tip from someone on this list, I replaced the lower ball joint that had 1/4 inch of play. I do ALL my own work, for this reason. One thing to keep in mind, these vans are rare, and parts will not always be available in the US. There were less of them sold than some "limited edition" American cars. Allot of the dealers, that don't care. The first dealer that I found who cared was in Canada, now I buy just about everything through him. Using regular mail it takes about a week to get the part. We also have a 92 Alfa Spider. The one thing that owning Alfas and other Italian cars has taught me, is if it feels or act unusual, it is in your best interest to find out why ASAP. I've had replacement parts mailed to me before the car broke down. Act and don't react! Peace -----Original Message-----

In case you have not noticed, I have tried to contribute positive info to help the other members. True, I do not own a VW now, but who said I do not "like" them? I said I was glad and relieved to not "own" one now. I still like VW's in several ways. The Passat is one of the best cars in its class. The VR6 and the TDI are fantastic powerplants. The EV is arguably the best van on the market. I still miss the functionality of it. But I do have serious problems with the attitude and performance of the VW organization (which appears to be, if you have not noticed from other members too, "We don't care, and we aren't going to do anything about it") The local dealers here leave something to be desired in several ways. I very simply came to a point where I was not willing to take the risk anymore of incurring large amounts of money and being without a vehicle needed for daily use. (After only 3 years of use, the $1,500 A/C system on my '90 Vanagon blew, VW offered not one penny. After only 3 years of use, the $2,250 A/C system blew on my '93 EV, and only after much wrangling did they offer to pay 1/3. I "only" had to pay $1,500. Then the shifter bushing broke and I was "only" out the EV for six weeks. After a lot of time and effort spent to get the remaining part myself from Germany with the help of friends, they finally agreed to reimburse only the $70 to ship the part.) How would you feel to be without a daily driver for 6 weeks?? I missed my vacation that summer because of the failure to get necessary parts. I spent extra dollars for my wife and 2 of my kids to fly to New York. So I was able to use her car for 2 weeks. After that I was fortunate to have just purchased an old Toyota Tercel that my son would soon purchase for his first car. I was lucky to not have to rent a car. I do not think it is reasonable to have to rent a car for six weeks, waiting on a $6 part. If the EV had been an extra vehicle for me it would be a different story. Are you going to begrudge me because I prefer a reliable, cost efficient vehicle? So why do I bother? Because I think I might be able to help with a piece of information from time to time. And I can learn about different things from the members here. I, like, Ron, think freedom to have a diversity of opinions here is a good thing. My hope is that no one will be offended, but ultimately we all choose how to act or react. The high altitude kit vent is supposed to be mounted exactly where you've described that yours (Joel's) is located. It is located directly BELOW the single combined intake/exhaust vent that Kent has on his EVC, on the flat surface of the body panel. Kent --- drop by a dealer and take a look at a new EVC to see exactly where it is located. Better yet, just have the dealer install the kit for you. Its my understanding that the retrofit on the '97's is free (at least that's what mine cost earlier this year, and others have subsequently also had that experience). As for exact location, if you decide to install it yourself Kent, mine is exactly 17" below the original single vent (center to center dimension). Good luck. Sheldon -----Original Message-----

My understanding from other posts to this list is that the vent mounts above the existing vent, which, unfortunately, places it right under the window, but that is how it was designed. Re: EV Exhaust Knock
Andrew,
Have you checked the heat shield which is located between the catalytic converter and the passenger floor? With the catalytic converted cooled, slide under the EV and try to move the heat shield. It is held by two bolts which have a tendency to break loose from the EV body and then allow the heat shield to rattle. Someone fixed theirs by drilling a hole in the EV floor and then, with a smaller bit, drilling a hole in the heat shield, followed by inserting a self-tapping screw through the floor and into the heat shield. Re: EVC Pop-Top Insulation Tip
I was wondering if anyone had tried this. I'm glad to know it works.
Speaking of insulation, what have folks tried for sound or thermal insulation in the body cavities? When I replaced the rear speakers in my 97 EVC I noticed that there is nothing but air and sheet metal behind the trim panels where the speakers are mounted. Ditto behind the fridge and pantry cabinet, and I'll bet the same is true behind the closet and in the sliding door. While my fridge was out for service this summer, I installed strips of Dynamat on the inside of the body panels behind the fridge and pantry cabinet, which seems to have reduced the road noise somewhat. I'd be interested to know what others have tried.
