That is right. I do it at the "shower", that I can see when it's over. It
still takes long, but there is no other way to do it (whoever did that design had no brain). That loop is closed (I guess) and if you want to open the valve and let it run with no pump working (building pressure) it will take a week for the full tank to drain. Severin. I thought I'd share this with the list; My front brakes started making a
most disagreeable rumbling-grinding-metal-on-metal noise after just 12k miles. I took the EVC in to the dealer (Dirito Bros in Walnut Creek, CA) but they could not reproduce the noise, so did nothing. We're about to move cross-country (to Eastern Shore of Virginia), dragging a trailer. The noise kept returning, making me plenty nervous. I took the EVC back to the dealer (in my 13th month of ownership), and convinced the head mechanic to ride around with me. Long story shortened, we got the noise to repeat. It turned out that the front disks had been overheated (they were dark blue), most likely by me during the first trip to Lake Tahoe. $600 items to replace. But the disks are covered under warranty only for first 12 months. The dealer convinced the VW rep to cover the repair, after much coaxing from me. Lesson learned : Use your engine to slow you down on long downhill runs! |

Hello. Sorry to have to re-hash this issue, but I had to drain my
freshwater tank on a 97 EVC last week. I used the valve to the left of the Norcold. Unbelievably slow! Did someone come up with a solution for this? It almost seems like the valve is clogged or something. Thanks Michael Curry |

The springs has two major VW dealers: Winslow and Heuberger. Our camper was
originally sold by Winslow. We bought it used from Heuberger when the original owner traded it in. The Heuberger mechanics won't touch the Winnie parts but seem good when doing the VW servicing. I haven't tried the Winslow ones. The rep we dealt with was much lower key than the average car sales guy. I can't remember his name but if you want to call them, email me and I will ask my husband who probably remembers. Good luck. You do not need to remove the tank. |

As many of you know, my EV had an engine fire last weekend. I've since had
a close look at the engine compartment, and it would seem that the majority of damage is in the area where the fuel lines come together just above the distributor. I went to the NHTSA website and found three defect complaints on the 93 EVs which relate to fuel leaks, one of which caused a fire. If in fact fuel leaks are a common occurance in 93 EVs, I'd like to take VW to task. My question to the group is, how many of you have had fuel leak problems with your 93 EVs? Have any of you had an engine fire related to a fuel leak? Please let me know. Thanks. Ric |

About two years ago my fuel line was leaking. I smelled the gas and when I opened the hood I saw it dripping. It was the blue fuel line, just where the plastic meets the rubber line. I immediately replaced the line with generic line, but I have a persistent problem with gasoline fumes. After having checked all the fuel lines and especially the clamps I came to the conclusion that it must be the clamp on top of the fuel tank. (or possibly a leak where the sending unit is inserted into the tank.) I'll have to drop the tank and check. I have done this before and I am not looking forward to this. When I wanted to buy a new fuel line at the VW parts counter the guy recommended using generic fuel line because he thought it was silly to replace a bad fuel line with another bad one. He was convinced that they are poorly made and told me to save the $25 or so--which I did. He, however, quit recently so I can not ask him if he had any knowledge of a hidden warranty. Eckhard |

Engine Fires

I received a couple of emails regarding my recent post about the engine
fire in my 93 EVs. Both folks asked if I had seen the recent postings about loose fuel line connections. I was in Germany for most of the summer, and obviously missed them. Does anyone know how I can find these in the archives? If it turns out that this is a "common" occurance, I'd like to get in touch with VoA. Thanks. Ric |

I spoke with Ralph Potter our local VW rep and he is going to check into this
problem. I asked him to check with the factory trained mechanic and let me know what type of repair they suggest for my leaking fuel lines. We discussed the spring clamps that were put on at the factory and he suggested that anytime a plastic fitting meets rubber hose to use the spring clamp. I explained the rubber hose was connected to a metal fitting, and he suggested the standard screw clamps. He was unaware of any recall or service bulletin on fuel leaks, but said he would check into it. I told him that this problem seems very common. I'm going to cut my rubber hoses off short, insert a metal barbed fitting and then add on new hoses. This should be a short term fix until I get a reply from VW. I'll post any information I receive back. becker Mexico radio
I am interested in having a car radio that also receives shortwave
broadcasts. I finally located a Becker Mexico 2340. Apparantly they are often used in Mercedes. Does anyone have experience with these radios? I have over 40,000 on a set of Agilis (that I have only rotated 3-4 times). They have hardly any wear on them, and are still quiet. I asked my mechanic to check it out when he was looking at another problem (O2 sensor), but unfortunately, I had to pick it up (after three whole days) before he had a chance to get to either problem. For those of you who drive this model with these tires, at
what pressure do you keep your tires.? The recommended pressure on the door
plate is 43 front & 48 back.? (Of course, I asked them to put in this
pressure, and they filled them to 35 all around.)

I plan on getting out this afternoon and filling them to the
recommended pressure, but would like to get some feedback from those of you with
experience.
