Re: EVC-5 Cruise Control Transplant Report

So you have an early model Eurovan and you don't have cruise!!!!

1. VW doesn't sell a kit to add cruise.
2. VW dealers don't know what they are talking about when it comes to adding cruise.
3. VW parts guys don't know what is in their own product.
Don't forget here guys that I installed a $69 cruise (from J.C.
Whitney...brand name = Audiovox) in my '93 GL.

Took me one day and it works perfect.

Cooling fans: Descriptions needed for the uninformed

There has been a considerable amount of discussion on this list about cooling
fans, series resistors, multiple speed motors (not NOT), squeaky blower fans,
and potential failure of the A/C system if faulty series resistors are not
replaced. As a less than fully informed observer, I am impressed by the
group knowledge of EV technical details presented here.

However, I am often baffled as to whether the thread is regarding engine
cooling fans or interior ventilation fans. It appears to me that the engine
has two fans, and the EV6 has two interior circulation fans, one in the dash
and one under the floor below the passenger seat for the rear section. Both
the engine and interior systems have series resistors/multiple speeds, and
both have experienced problems, at least on the EV5 models. What key words
should I look for to differentiate these threads, other than "engine cooling"
or "in the dash"? I would like to suggest that in the future some key words
be used to reduce ambiguity.

be a safety recall before anyone dies from this problem. My bet is that
VW won't initiate a recall until there is a death.

As many of you know, my EV had an engine fire last weekend. I've
since had
a close look at the engine compartment, and it would seem that the
majority
of damage is in the area where the fuel lines come together just
above the
distributor.

I went to the NHTSA website and found three defect complaints on the
93 EVs
which relate to fuel leaks, one of which caused a fire. If in fact
fuel
leaks are a common occurance in 93 EVs, I'd like to take VW to task.

My question to the group is, how many of you have had fuel leak
problems
with your 93 EVs? Have any of you had an engine fire related to a
fuel leak?

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Re: Eurovan Toilet Options

We also have the Sears model. We normally travel with it behind the rear
bench seat and take it out when needed and also at night.

Bill,

We have a Sears Pak-A-Potti 6000 portable toilet --- its made for
Sears by
Thetford. It works perfectly for travel and trips and fits well on
the
floor just in front of the rear seat next to the sliding side door.
We
added a set of non-slip pads to the bottom of the unit and use a
nylon strap
to secure it into place when traveling (one of those backpack style
straps
with quick snap connectors). Thetford also makes a set of quick-clip
connectors to secure the Pak-A-Potti to the floor of the camper. I
bought a
set of those then decided not to use them after all as they required
installing the clips permanently onto the floor. The quick-connect
nylon
strap serves the same function without having to drill into the floor.

We had a similar portable toilet in our old '78 VW Campmobile, and
one in
our Apache pop-up camper before that. All worked equally well.

what
people are doing in the way of a portable toilet system. I've

for boats. Is there room in the vehicle to store such a device?
What
brands do people like? What setups work well for that 3AM wakeup

I find a plastic peanut butter jar works great for middle of the night
bladder calls. Doesn't take much space and is easily rinsed out. I
replace it each time I empty a jar of peanut butter.

Seems to be a lot of Sears porti-pottis in our list EVCs. I've got one
too that we pull out of the rear storage area behind the back seat at
night and place it behind the passenger seat. My wife and son wouldn't
think of traveling without it. Works great.

At 3 AM under the bush or tree works the best for us (most often we camp out
in the wilderness, do not like those busy campgrounds much). I know some
people have such hi tech devices, but I do not find enough room to store
shit in my van (that's only my personal opinion). I guess that's just the
matter of preference.

The bottom line price for
a 99 is, I believe $32,000.

I think if you are willing to wait few months until 2000 will be wide out
you can beat that for couple thousands, but not much more.

All I can say I bought my brand new in Wausau, Wisconsin (Wausau Import) in
May '98 (but that was '97 model) for $30k. It looks like not bad deal. They
always have them there and they know about this camper a little, but it
looks too far for you to travel.

Drop me a line if you want to know more about that place.

See in Vanagon it was about 2" plug where full tank would be dry in 1-1.5
minutes just by gravity and here we have to live with this.

That is right. I do it at the "shower", that I can see when
it's over. It
still takes long, but there is no other way to do it
(whoever did that
design had no brain). That loop is closed (I guess) and if
you want to open
the valve and let it run with no pump working (building
pressure) it will
take a week for the full tank to drain.

Don't know how far you want to travel but we have a 1995 eurovan for
sale. We're the second owners...bought it two years ago in New York
State just before moving here to North Carolina. We both retired and
thought we would be taking lots of trips to the mountains, seashore and
decided the 5 cycl Audi engine would be great for round-town driving as
well as on the road. It is. But we are having such a good timein
Winston-Salem, we just don't go camping like we used to when we were
working and wanting to get away for weekends.

Want more info let me know.

Re: 93 EV Fuel Line Problem Survey

Access to the fuel lines,at the tank, and fuel pump, is made via a
removable
cover under the carpet by the gear shift. You do not need to remove the

tank.

->Thanks Chris for the tip. My manual, however, states that I have to
cut the carpet to get to the access hole. Is there a way to get around
cutting the oh so lovely blue carpet? If so I would be very
interested. I suppose I could take the seats out and move the entire
carpet, which I had to do when the A/C drain was plugged and flooded my
van on a long trip. Make sure that drain pipe is clean!!
Thanks
Eckhard

Welcome fellow Colorado.

McDonalds VW/Audi has a salesman there (named Dave, I think) who has owned
VW campers for 25 years. HE is very knowledgeable. The bottom line price for
a 99 is, I believe $32,000.

there is also a dealer in the Springs who is pretty cheap, but I do not
think they know anything about Campers.

Also there is a dealer in Fort Collins who seems to know what they are
doing, but I found them to be pricey.
