Re: Forensic Investigator visits my EuroVan

Vance, Beaumont W.

The loss of use would not be covered unless you had rented a vehicle and
possible future damage doesn't meet the definition of "loss"

However you have a good claim for loss of value. If you were to sell the
vehicle in the e future, you would have to disclose the fact that it had an
engine fire. This will lower the price.

The point of first party insurance is to make you whole again. You are not
made whole until you receive full indemnification for the loss. Ergo, they
still owe you for the loss of value.

It is a little known fact that most carriers will pay this. But they will
never tell you about it. Slap that one on your adjuster.

Re: Forensic Investigator visits my EuroVan

Vance, Beaumont W.

Indeed you are right. My memory is a touch rusty on this. After I sent that
e-mail I realized the error of my ways.

Most auto fraud involves fire. The preferred methods are dumping gas all
over the place and lighting it or, more cleverly, placing some steel wool
with a little accelerant on it on the wiring system. Auto adjusters will
usually do a very thorough investigation on auto fires. This is probably why
he was so interested.

But I never once received an auto fire claim as an adjuster.

Fire is a Comprehensive coverage claim, you don't need it to be an accident

for fire to be covered.

Re: 96 Rialta for sale

If you are serious about looking for a Rialta go to this site and do a
search on Rialta as the keyword. 15 to 30 available at any give time.

If you want new at the best price in the nation go to Forest City Iowa
where they are assembled. $46K with all the toys and you can nego in
the leather seating. or chew down from there.

I have been researching these for 2 years and have found one that my
parents purchased last year used. The 95 & 96 have the 5 cyl and the
97's on have the VR6 and an extra foot in length. The lowest price I
have seen so far is a 95 with 20K for $25k asking. The 96 should be
closer to $30K. My parents have a 97 which I used for 4 weeks this
year. This is the ultimate EV and still got 16 MPG and cruises at
85mph so nice. I am saving up for one of these but as long as I can
milk for free why buy the cow. If interested we can start a thread on
Rialtas. All the same EV parts under the hood.

Thanks you for the info. This really helps em decide what transmission I
need. There is one last question remaining. Does anyone know know if I can
replace an CHY with an CEU? According to the book (thanks again) the gear
ratios are identical. I am just not certain if the electronics are
compatible. The CEU was installed from 12/91 to 8/92, the CHY only from
9/92 to 12/92. There are many used CEUs available but no CHYs. I just don't
want to pay almost $5000 for a transmission in a van that is worth maybe
$10000 max. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Eckhard

Good job. Sorry its taking you so long to get this resolved. It
amazing that VW has not taken aggressive action to get to the bottom
of
this. I would think they would want to make sure a "bad" rumor didn't
get started on the EV, they would have an "Audi 5000" on their hands.
Unfortunately the Audi 5000 problem actually turned out to be driver
error, not design error. Perhaps VW is shell-shocked from all of the
media attention the 5000 got 10 years ago and is shy to fix the
problem. Regardless, there is no excuse for them not fixing the problem.

Having noted this, I'm surprised EV's in Europe haven't had this
problem (given their numbers vs US EV's)...
Perhaps there is one difference between US and European EVs....I've
been reading a lot about the Reformulated Gasoline (RFG) that we have
here in the states and how it affects rubber components of the fuel
system. Perhaps this is part of the problem. I know that the European
countries do not have this type of gasoline.

My saga has now taken an interesting turn. I got a call this morning
from the dealer where my EV has been residing as of late, and was
told
that there was an insurance investigtor looking at my EV. They put
the
investigator on the phone, I told him I'd be there in 10 minutes to
meet with him...so off I went armed with my trusty file.

As soon as I got there we went out to the EV. He asked me a bunch of
questions about what happened, how I kept the EV in such good shape,
etc. Then he went to the engine compartment and pointed out the
damage
and asked me where I thought the problem was. Showed him the
melted/burned blue fuel line. He said he wasn't sure if it was the
cause of the fire, because the damage would have been further
toward
the battery tray. Then I moved the severed piece of hose to where it
originally had been prior to the fire (just above the distributor).
From there all the pieces fell into place. He showed me the
distributor
cap...the back side was all charred and melted. This burn area was
right below the blue fuel line.

Conclusion - fire caused by leaking fuel return line (blue line)
dripping fuel onto distributor.

He was especially interested in the Canadian recall. I gave him a
copy
as well as the URL for the Canadian Ministry of Transportation. He
also
looked over the various email reports from the folks on the lists as
well.

He also mentioned that he had seen a number of burnt EVs over the
past
year or so. Because I used my fire extinguisher and got the fire out
quickly, I was able to preserve the "evidence", and he said that
this
is the first EV he as been able to get a definate conclusion as to
the
cause of the fire.

Re: EV fuel lines

The injection system you describe from the 75 bus is not the injection
system on the EVs. The injectors are inserted into a fuel injection
rail. The rail is under constant pressure, the injectors just open up
via an electric implse...there are no fuel lines on the individual
injectors on the EV as in a flat 4 engine.

The problems are mainly in the return feed that goes to the fuel tank.
You should also be aware that the regular type of screw type of clamps
don't work very well in a fuel injection system as they loose their
grip over time.

Having other VW's, a 75 bus to be exact, I have been thru a good
amount
of fuel line replacement. What makes many bus owners worry on bus fuel
lins are the very short hoses that connect the injectors to the rest
of
the fuel line system. From the factory the injectors come with a short
(about 1") length of hose that has some kind of ferrule (like the
crimp
thing) where the line meets the injector. Many just leave this short
line alone and that is a mistake. What should be done is to remove the
line and ferrule and replaced by new hose and the proper hose clamp.
This is the exact same repair the I am doing on my EV. Remove the
crimp
thing and the old hose and replace them with new hose and clamps.

Just be sure to get the right hose and clamps. Good parts stores have
just what you need.

There's a plug that fits in the hole. My plug keept falling out, so I

My 93 EVMV (production date 9/92) also has a handle on the inside to open
the back hatch.

I have an interior handle/hatch release on my 92EVGL
The insert is rectangular, about 4" wide and 2" high
the handle is 1" high, in the top half of the opening.flush with the
panel
You pull upward to release the latch. There is a "child lock" lever on
the bottom edge of the hatch to disable the inside handle

FS EuroVan Repair Manuals in Canada

Hi;
I have some copies of the EuroVan Repair Manual 1992-1999 as
published by Robert Bentley Pub. It was out of print for a while but
has been reprinted. It consists of two volumes and is very detail
including all wiring diagrams and information on the Westfalia
camper equipment. Even if you don't plan on doing your own work,
it is good to have on a trip, in the event of problems, a good repair
garage would find it helpful in making repairs. I am selling them for
$187.00 Canadian funds plus $12.00 shipping/insurance plus GST
or HST depending on your province. If you were to order a second
of any other book that I have at the same time, it would be $178.00
Canadian. I have an assortment of Robert Bentley titles available at
comparable prices. Please email me at roseland@...
