the hole that leads to the latch on the back hatch? Did the previous
owner lose a locking/opening device or a cover of some sort. My local
VW dealer says it doesn't show up on the microfilm.
Any ideas?

There's a plug that fits in the hole. My plug keept falling out, so I
left it out. The purpose for the hole is to open the hatch from the
inside in case of emergency.
