Tires & Warranties on Eurovans

tya2

Dear Listmates,

I have had a series of Eurovans and have probably bought 4 or 5 sets of tires. The latest surprise was when I bought a set of Michelin Agilis 51s last week and within 400 km had a puncture due to a screw penetration. Tire Warehouse where they were bought, said no light truck tires come with road hazard warranty and if you tire starts with anything on other than a P it is considered to be a light truck tire. Good question to ask the dealer where you are buying your new 2002 and 2003 Eurovans. What is the tire warranty and what does it cover? I expected better from Michelin...

We're discussing tying the new EV purchase into a vacation and
buying it there and driving it home (if we do our usual "visit the
family" trip out west) or driving around Europe and shipping it
home
(esp attractive if we get some of the Europe only stuff). Given
the
modern engines & oils, how important is the 1,000km breakin
period?
There are some who say the period is a holdover from the old days,
and some who even say driving hard when new is a better way to
break
in an engine, (though these seem to be mostly motorcycle folk
(Az?)). Two local dealers say it doesn't matter at all, but they
also are trying to sell (slightly) used cars they bought to ferry
their kids cross country to college.
Any opinions?
RWC
Most modern engines require very little in the way of a break in.
Like everything else though, this may be a compromise primarily to
make things more convenient on the masses. I personally think that
taking it easy on a new vehicle simply makes sense. There are a lot
of parts that fot together very precisely, and have to run that way
a long time. Giving them a little time to get to know each other
before hammering on them will make them last longer. It also makes
sense to pay a little more attention to things like fluid levels and
temps during the first few thousand miles.

That being said, break in is actually pretty easy. Just drive
normally, (assuming you don't drive like I do normally) don't tow
anything, don't try to set a new world record making it to Idaho for
your mother in law's tupperware party, don't sit in stop and go
traffic, and don't lug it.

Those folks that believe being hard on a motor during break in are
part right... it will break in faster. It will also not last as
long.

so), or
more likely due to the rearward travel of the front seats being
limited
by the middle seats in the MV. Whatever the cause, I know that in
the MV
front passenger seat I could barely get my knees off the
dashboard, and
in the driver seat (I sit relatively close for my size) I barely
felt
like I had enough room with the seat all the way back. In the GLS I
could almost straighten my legs in both seats. Now maybe this is
also
the case if you remove the middle seats from the MV, but that would
negate the whole reason for getting an EV in the first place.

Todd Kenyon
According to EKTA, the front seat tracks have the same part number
for all models. My seat goes all the way back with no problem. I
think maybe you had the seat back reclined far enough that it
whacked the rear facing seat and prevented you from moving the seat
all the way back.

the only safety issue with the Euro spec is they have an Orange bulb,
while we in the US have a stupid bright orange corner with a clear
bulb. i went with the Euro look, LOOKS HOT on a silver van, completes
the front nicely.
Clear corners from www.importvision.com and i got the 4 round

Re: Carrier bag over cab on EVC 2000?

if you get the factory roof rack, thule rack, yak rack, etc. place this
over the driver/passenger portion of the van. now, on these 2 cross bars
you can go to any parts store, walmart, k-mart, etc and get a travel
bag. they would tighten securely to the roof rack. it's a windbreaker
kind of material, don't know if it's waterproof. if not you can go to
sears,Thule, Yakima, they have a hard one that size, fiberglass, and
lockable.

#2. the van came with 2 flip keys that are $100.00 plus programming
each. then there is a tiny black key that is your valet. the key VW gave
you is there $6.00 key to shut the average person up. it's a old vw key
with a light in it to make "most" people happy, the battery can be
changed, but t's still wrong. And yes, all keys should start the van,
and be able to drive away.
#3. the rubber pads should be there. there nice to hold the cup in.(if
they wont give them to you, just "look" at another van and take them.

2. I got 2 keys; one with the remote lock buttons that will start the
?? car, and one that has only a light in it, and won't start the
car
?? (the valet key, I guess). Should there be two keys?
There should be two keys that lock/unlock the doors plus control the
ignition.? You should also get one other key which can be used to
lock/unlock
doors manually and start the ignition.?

3. The '03s I looked at had rubber pads in the trays between the front
?? and middle jump seats. Mine has empty plastic trays. Are the
pads
?? missing?
My '01 Weekender does not have rubber pads...a visit to the local
hardware
store can be useful if you want such pads.

That single in dash is a german only option i believe. i modified mine
to fit in the storage tray just under the radio. So, like other VW's,
push cd once the indash works, push cd again, my changer works.
works great for road trip, keep the kids cd's in the changer.
it's the same in dash as the golf, etc. if anyone is interested

Thanks Lee. I was thinking to get that report myself but appreciate the

sell. With year end rapidly approaching the deals may get better.
FYI - my dealer is offering 4-1/4% 3 year VW financing . Not very
competitive with all the 0% deals floating around.

Hi Karen!

I have a 95 EVC, too. I live in Thornton. We have the middle bench
seat and LOVE it! Some folks don't like them, but they really
aren't
that difficult to maneuver around. MUCH more value than not having
it. We have 3 kids and it is an indispensible addition.

You might try John Bigelow at JDB Imports (www.jdbimports.com).

He is located in Commerce City and can be reached at 1-888-872-9517
or 303-287-9797. We bought our 95 EVC from him. He's a great guy
and knows A LOT about the campers. He might have a seat he could
sell, or tell you where to go. (Tell him Jason who bought the last
95
EVC he had last month sent you).

Alternately, you could try these folks:
Chris
allentown, pa

I don't know much about them, but they always post on the VWs for
sale sites claiming they have a lot of seat options. (May only be
for
Vanagons, but worth a shot). Try John first.

Good Luck!

Re: What came standard with a 2002 MV?

wolfcreekadman <[email protected]>

In general, since there were absolutely no changes from 2002 to 2003,
anything that you see in the 2003 should be in your van.

Write up a list, give it to your salesperson and manager of the dealership.
Keep one for your records.

One thing you didn't mention was the roadside service package. You should
get a booklet describing this program (4 years!)

Keep in mind that most VW dealers don't sell many EV's...so they may not be
familiar with them. And sometimes models sitting on the lot are cannibalized
to provide missing stuff for other EV's.

Good luck.

Dear Mary,

Who is doing these strange things to your Eurovan? A VW dealer or other shop? What year vehicle do you have?

At this point I think you need a really good coolant system flush, an oil change and flush, and a transmission system flush.

With all of the proper fluids in their proper places people can start to do some analysis of what is going on.

With coolant in the oil you have the symptoms of a blown head gasket in the engine. In those situations or suspected situations I would recommend an oil sample to be taken and sent for analysis. Your situation sounds so strange I don't really know what you would analyze, except that as soon as possilbe I would be trying to get the wrong fluids totally out and the right ones in, and I don't mean next week, or next month.

Need RF headlight and turn signal

Thomas Isom <[email protected]>

I am looking for a right front headlight and turn signal for my '93
EV. I lost the right front turn signal on the freeway on Saturday
night. The reason it fell out (second one that's fallen off in a
couple of months) is that the retaining clip on the headlight
mounting frame thingy is broken off so the turn signal is not held
in. Plus, the right front headlight has a corroded reflector due to
not being water tight. I also need the holder for the turn signal
bulb because the plastic broke where the retaining flanges are. The
flanges broke off and got lost with the turn signal. (I drove back
and forth on a stretch of the freeway at midnight in a wind storm
looking for the turn signal, but it was gone.)

I am considering converting to European H4 headlights, but the
simplest and cheapest option is to get another US-spec right
headlight. I could go with either the amber reflective US-spec turn
signals or some clear Euro-style ones (I bought those too, but lost
the right-side one). The clear Euro-style ones look good and I like
the little turn signal bulge, but the reflector kind are the proper
equipment for the U.S. and might possibly add some very slight margin
of safety (?). European automotive lighting is very good, but I do
think the U.S.-required side reflectors and side marker lights are
better/safer. (OTOH, the big white billboard-side of my EV isn't
exactly likely to escape notice even in poor visibility conditions.)

Anyone have a right headlight complete with plastic mounting frame?
Any turn signals? Thanks.

Forgot to mention, I have never had a coolant or thermostat problem.
Even with this mucky stuff, my temperature gage never changed. Mary

Is there anything non-standard about the battery in the Eurovan,
or will it be a simple matter to get a replacement at Sears or

Re: Master Clutch Cylinder replacement

Bill Barber

Thanks, I was able to get it bled. My big mistake was starting the job
with the van on the ground. In order to reach the slave cylinder, I had
to get underneath. Thankfully, my 2 sons are home for the holidays and
were able to push the van up onto the ramps. Also, thankfully, I have a
sloping driveway.

I still have the problem of the cracked mounting plate for the master
clutch cylinder which I believe to be a "recall" design fault. However,
I haven't convinced the dealer of that "yet". Anyone else have master
clutch cylinder problems due to a cracked mounting plate? Do I have to
remove the steering column and dash to replace it?

Thanks,
Bill

Re: Front Seat Sizes - a measurement needed

80 Westy Pokey

Larry,

It seems the sewfine web site doesn"t cover Z-beds and the
rear cushion did they do yours? Early westies like Pokey have
very squared off rear benches as opposed to later models that
are more moulded.

Also, it is somewhat of a rarity, but another vanagon seat
they don't have is the two person passenger bench that gives
you three across seating in front. This was present in panel
vans and some singlecabs, plus a few others I'm sure.

I have been meaning to measure mine and send it to you but I
haven't yet.

Thanks,
Chris

Volks,

OK, I think I almost have the Vanagon Front seat size thing
sorted out
(previous post "Front Seat Sizes - Need Info"

Would someone please take some measurements for me on a
Stock Vanagon
Seat not on a swivel base.

See Below.

Based on input received from my original posting it appears
the
difference in Vanagon/Westy Seats is whether they came
mounted on swivel
bases or not.

Those on swivel bases seem to be smaller (Thickness, Width,
Depth etc)

I've been told that's the only difference in seats from
1983 - 1991.

1983 - 1991

Swivel base Seat Measurements:

Back Cushion Width ... 19" (at widest)
Back Cushion Height ... 20" (at widest)

Bottom Cushion Width ... 20" (at widest)
Bottom Cushion Depth ... 21" (at deepest)
Bottom Cushion Depth ... 5" (smallest)
Bottom Cushion Depth ... 6" (largest)

Non-Swivel Base Seat Measurements

Back Cushion Width ... ? (at widest)
Back Cushion Height ... ? (at widest)

Bottom Cushion Width ... ? (at widest)
Bottom Cushion Depth ... ? (at deepest)
Bottom Cushion Depth ...? (smallest)
Bottom Cushion Depth ... ? (largest)

Are there any other front seat sizes that were available?

Am I correct about all the years between 83-91 being the
same?
