Yes, I have heard many stories. As a matter of fact my transmission (93 EVGL)
(code CHY) failed about 2 months ago. I consequently talked to many people (VW
mechanics, transmission shop dudes etc.) and I kept hearing the same story.
Between 10/91 and 12/92 VW installed 10 different automatic transmissions in the
EV alone. Considering that most Europeans buy standard transmissions it is not
surprising to get automatic transmissions that are not tested as well as
standard transmissions.

Re: cv joints wear

A couple of years ago I had an inner Cv joint go bad. The only source
at the time was VW and they only had Rebuilt ones. But it has been OK
ever since! About boots: If you have the money replace them now, you
can not tell if there is much life left in old ones

EV fuel leak smoking gun?

OK, I finally got around to fixing the sometimes small fuel leak in my
93
EV. The clamps and fuel line were cheaper then a fire extingisher
anyway.
Not sure where that logic goes. I may of found a reason for the
leaking!
Many have said that the blue return line is the one that leaks more. But
this does not make sence since the return pressure is much lower the
the supply pressure. And my blue return line was the one that was
sometimes leaking.

I started with the blue return line. It came off with an easy pull on
the crimped end. The other end with a spring clamp came off just as
easy, only after I removed the clamp! No big deal replacing it, cut a
new section of
7x3 mm fuel injection line the same length as the old one. Used high
quality fuel injection clamps. And the fuel line I used was the exact
same as the factory stuff! The same marking ID numbers.

Now the other line. This is the black supply line. I could not make it
come loose on the crimped end! Instead of risking damage to the plastic
tubing I used a hacksaw to cut a slit in the metal crimp. Now with the
old line off I saw from the markings and size that this supply line
was 7.5 x 3 mm! Same inside diameter but 1/2mm larger in out side
diameter then the return line! I replaced it same as the return.

But here is the question: Is the metal crimp part the same on both the
blue return and the black supply line? I can not say as I damaged the
old supply crimp in the replacment precess. Can anyone with original
lines go out and measure the metal crimps?

If this is the case and they are the same then we have the smoking gun
as to why a few of our EV's have burst into flames. And VW will have
hell to pay to explain this one away!

Re: Who has towed what? & VW Hitch

I bought the VW hitch package for my 2000 EV. I was disappointed to
find out that they only rated it at 1500 lb. I thought it would have
at least carried a class II rating. I put it on anyway because I
wanted to use the lighting package. I will have to by a class III
later, any recommendations?

I plan to tow My Ghia around with my bus. The total of car and trailer
will be between 3500 and 4000 lbs. I don't expect to have a problem.

The Europa weighs around 1500 lbs.
Ron,

We have a '93 EV GL...automatic...we tow our 1700-pound pop-up trailer
(probably 2000 pounds loaded), plus a full load of people around the
mountains of New Mexico.

The trailer has brakes, but a couple times, for various reasons, the
brakes could not be used, and I found absolutely no drama involved in
stopping.

I wish I had a trans thermometer so I'd know how hard the trans is
working, but all in all, it seems to be the EV is more than capable of
towing 2000 pounds with no brakes, and the trans seems more than up to
the task of pulling.

I'm sure you know the EV is rated to tow 1500 pounds on an unbraked
trailer, and 4400 pound with a braked trailer...this is for the
automatic, I don't know the ratings for the manual, which are probably
less, but I'm sure you'll be fine...just take it easy and leave plenty
of extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you...it's
VERY easy to forget there's a trailer behind you when you don't do it
very often.

Re: Ticking Noise with 2000 EV (vacuum?)

Could be the injectors. This system sounds different than our 88
Cabrio which is all mechanical fuel injection (no 2000 EV Bently
Manuals yet). The sound does vary with RPM. It is odd that it is a
louder sometimes that others. Thanks for the note. It has been there
since day one, not getting worse, so it sounds that you have hit the
likely cause. Just looking to sleep better. Thanks

they "click".

How can they think of crushing it? With so few EV's in this country we need

Re: Who has towed what?.................

I was wondering if I could use my '93 EV MV with a 5 speed to tow my '74
Lotus Europa without a braked trailer. The Europa weighs around 1500 lbs. I
would prefer to rent a trailer and hitch since this is something I'd do only
1-2 times a year. Plan is to tow it to my annual club meeting. This year it
is in Ottawa. Will drive from NJ. Any comments? Is this too hard on trans?

They are blade replaceable, but the VW cost on replacement rubbers exceeds
the cost of buying a full blade from a place like Checker Auto Parts.

pop top rattle

<When traveling on rough roads (paved or otherwise) my '97 Eurovan
pop-top makes a lot of noise as if it wasn't locked down.>

Kent, yes it could be your bed platform.

Also, there are L shaped hooks, you've no doubt seen, that hang down
from the roof to engage the latches. The hooks are adjustable by
loosening a nut on each one just under the roof. These can get loose and
cause a rattling noise.

In addition to the safety inspection aspect, if you're concerned that
the exhaust system would be close enough to the wheel to heat the
brake, I'd also worry about what that heat could do to the tire -- and
not just while you're driving, but especially when you stop. With no
moving air to help dissipate the heat, a hot exhaust system could
radiate heat for a long time after you shut the engine off and cause
damage while you're parked.

I learned about this the hard way. I didn't lose a tire, but on my
vacation this summer I melted some stuff I was hauling on a
hitch-mounted cargo carrier. I didn't take into account how much heat
is really generated by the exhaust, how far it would radiate, and for
how long. Thank God the stuff wasn't particularly valuable or
combustible. Some things within 2 feet of the tail pipe didn't fare
well, nor did my self-esteem when I was "grilled" mercilessly by
nearly
everyone who found out about this little episode.

This setup won't pass a safety inspection. The exhaust needs to be
at the
very rear of the vehicle cab, and in most states a side pipe won't
cut it.

When I had my old Ford pickup I had the exhaust just past the cab.
When I
took the truck in for inspection, it failed because I had the camper
shell on
the back and they considered this to be part of the cab. I went
home
and
took it off, went back and they passed it.

Just an update. The dealer DID install a new automatic transmission. It
took 1-1/2 days to complete. I peered over the papers on the service
department guy's desk and it looks like it was a 9000 DM (around $5400) job.
Comes with a 12 month warranty. Rode well on the way home!

A friend told me that the T4 has a history of automatic transmission
problems. Has anyone else heard this?

Just an update on my 99 EVC, here in Germany.

I've been bringing the van into the local dealer because of a problem in
the
automatic transmission -shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. The problem occurs
only when the engine is completely warm and usually when I'm accelerating
on
an uphill grade. When shifting from 3rd to 4th, the tachometer will jump
way up and then -clunk- the van shifts into 4th.

Today, the dealer had a VW representative come down from the factory (in
Wolfsburg?). In the end, he authorized the dealer to put in a new
transmission. Anybody else have this problem?

Otherwise all is well in Germany. The van cruises well on the autobahn.
Easily cruises at 95mph but I try to stay below 85 to keep wear and tear on
the engine down.

Ticking Noise with 2000 EV (vacuum?)

My 2000 EV has about 2500 miles on it. It has made a noise since day
one. It is a faint ticking noise that you can hear inside the car but
not out in the engine area. More noticable when under a load but you
can hear it at idle. It almost sounds like a tach cable or vacuum
ticking noise. It isn't in the engine. Anyone have a similar noise.
I'm going to drive another new EV to compare the sounds.

Maybe it is the power steering. Now that the weather has turned colder
(less than 40 deg F in the moring. There is a noise when making tight
turns. My wife always drives it so I don't hear it as much. Could be
a tight power steering system. Any thoughts? I do all of my own work
and really don't want to take it to the dealer (yet).

Re: 2000 Eurovan MV Pricing

I got my Gl (which the dealer special ordered for me) for $1000 over
dealer invoice. He did a lot of work to get it for me (spent a year
plus) so I thought is was a good price. His invoice was the same as
the Kelley Blue book and other pricing sites.

Maybe we could design and make one?
