Re: Bug Guard for 2000 Eurovan

Team Degenerate

VW dealers have the bug gaurd - I blieve they run $70 USD?? Kinda
pricey but I'm not shocked anymore.

I never imagined owning a vehicle I would want a bug gaurd on until I
got into the crazy EV world.

I now have a bug gaurd ;-)

There is one shown in the accessories catalog, available at the VW dealer.
The catalog has prices listed in it. The price for the hitch, was in line
with what I paid for mine.

Re: Spark Plug Wires - VR6

I dunno about the VR6, but new wires for my 1990 Passat were $185.00 AFTER
the local Napa guy's "I feel sorry for you because you own a VW" discount.

You might check out some of the suppliers in European Car magazine. Neuspeed
may have some really good 8mm wires for less than the local parts house or VW
Dealer may charge. 800-423-3623 or www.neuspeed.com

German Parts & Restoration also has some low prices. 800-321-5432.

While I was in Germany last month, I met with an Italian company that makes
the window insulation kits for the EV. They offer the cab window set, which

includes the windshield and drivers and passengers windows. They also have
a
cover for the rear window.

These covers attach with suction cups and are the quilted reflective
insulation material.

You can also buy the bulk material and make your own covers for the side
windows.

They also have insulation kits for the poptop canvas. This is also a
quilted
material, but does not have the reflective layer to it. They stock the kits

for the Westfalias, and can custom make the Winnie tops if I get them a
template.

I would like to start importing these kits for EuroVans and Vanagons, so
what
I propose is a group purchase. I would like to make an initial order for at

least 10 of each set, and would pass these kits on to anyone who wants them
at very close to my cost.

The difficult part of this is that I won't know what all the costs are until

they arrive. If these are shipped by parcel post, they can arrive at my
door. Other times I get hit with duty charges at the post office.

I will estimate a worst case cost and post the details.

Any volunteers for making the poptop pattern? I will need all 4 sides made
on plastic sheeting.

2000 MV seating (European Model)

I have a few new images up on my web page including a scan from the German MV
brochure showing the removable / reversible middle seats.

I have also moved the parts book images to this page including the 5 cyl fuel
line diagram.

The German EV has tracks in the floor that allow multiple arrangements of the
middle and rear seats. This is the same setup that the Westfalia model has
except the tracks are located in a different position. The MV model I saw at
the auto show in Frankfurt had a Westfalia plate on the lower panel on the
rear seat.

The floor is not carpeted, but has a rubber material with square bumps in it
that is placed over plywood. The tracks are cut into the floor of the EV and
the level with the top of the raised plywood floor.

This is a handy arrangement, but the tracks quickly fill up with dirt.

I only ask because Canada seems to get more VW models than we do. I thought
we were not supposed to get an EVC until 2001 since they have only been
produced in odd years for 93, 95, 97 and 99. I am shocked that we will have
a 2000 EVC.

Let me guess, it's white, right?

Re: EV: VW Parts Distribution / Do you really want a VW?

I appreciate your input but to think that a company like Toyota appreciates
it's customers and if the same thing happened to one of their cars that they
might even reimburse you...thats just crazy . Moreover saying that you
"perfer a reliable and cost efficient car" implies that the rest of us dont.
We all want reliable and cost efficent cars but unfortunately not every
single car or product a company offers will always be rock solid reliable. if
an auto manufacturer offered to fix eveything that went wrong with a car 1
year after the warranty was up anyways, they would lose a ton of money and i
think that if you were the president of the 3rd largest automaker in the
world you might find it difficult to give up that kind of cash. But i like
the VW "s because i have found them to be reliable and appealing to the eye
and they , to me are very useful and enjoyable cars with a lot of personaliy
and that is something the Japanese automakers definately dont have (
personality) as it seems everything they make is a copy of something else. I
still appreciate all the help and guidance that your experience can give me
because at one time you did own a Vw at one time. chris

Re: EV: VW Parts Distribution / Do you really wan t a VW?

Chris Noeske

I'll agree that it that would be frustrating, our EV is a 3rd vehicle for
that reason. Only once have I had a problem getting a part. It too was a 6
week item, and was an injector pump for a 15 year old turbo diesel. I found
that most of the problems are caused by mechanics that don't know what they
are doing, and cause more damage than they fix, all at your expense and the
vehicle manufactures reputation. The only time I took my EV to the dealer
was to get an alignment. The repair invoice said "check the ball joints
before doing an alignment." Two weeks later, after a tip from someone on
this list, I replaced the lower ball joint that had 1/4 inch of play. I do
ALL my own work, for this reason. One thing to keep in mind, these vans are
rare, and parts will not always be available in the US. There were less of
them sold than some "limited edition" American cars. Allot of the dealers,
that don't care. The first dealer that I found who cared was in Canada, now
I buy just about everything through him. Using regular mail it takes about
a week to get the part. We also have a 92 Alfa Spider. The one thing that
owning Alfas and other Italian cars has taught me, is if it feels or act
unusual, it is in your best interest to find out why ASAP. I've had
replacement parts mailed to me before the car broke down. Act and don't
react!

Peace

So why bother reading about something, you neither own or like?
First of all, I am not just reading. In case you have not noticed, I have
tried to contribute positive info to help the other members.
True, I do not own a VW now, but who said I do not "like" them?
I said I was glad and relieved to not "own" one now. I still like VW's in
several ways. The Passat is one of the best cars in its class. The VR6 and
the TDI are fantastic powerplants. The EV is arguably the best van on the
market. I still miss the functionality of it. But I do have serious problems
with the attitude and performance of the VW organization (which appears to
be, if you have not noticed from other members too, "We don't care, and we
aren't going to do anything about it") The local dealers here leave
something to be desired in several ways.
I very simply came to a point where I was not willing to take the risk
anymore of incurring large amounts of money and being without a vehicle
needed for daily use. (After only 3 years of use, the $1,500 A/C system on
my '90 Vanagon blew, VW offered not one penny. After only 3 years of use,
the $2,250 A/C system blew on my '93 EV, and only after much wrangling did
they offer to pay 1/3. I "only" had to pay $1,500. Then the shifter bushing
broke and I was "only" out the EV for six weeks. After a lot of time and
effort spent to get the remaining part myself from Germany with the help of
friends, they finally agreed to reimburse only the $70 to ship the part.)
How would you feel to be without a daily driver for 6 weeks?? I missed my
vacation that summer because of the failure to get necessary parts.
I spent extra dollars for my wife and 2 of my kids to fly to New York. So I
was able to use her car for 2 weeks. After that I was fortunate to have just
purchased an old Toyota Tercel that my son would soon purchase for his first
car. I was lucky to not have to rent a car. I do not think it is reasonable
to have to rent a car for six weeks, waiting on a $6 part. If the EV had
been an extra vehicle for me it would be a different story.
Are you going to begrudge me because I prefer a reliable, cost efficient
vehicle?

So why do I bother? Because I think I might be able to help with a piece of
information from time to time. And I can learn about different things from
the members here. I, like, Ron, think freedom to have a diversity of
opinions here is a good thing. My hope is that no one will be offended, but
ultimately we all choose how to act or react.

Peace,

Wade

Re: High Altitude Fridge Kit-Again

Sheldon H. Winick

Joel and Kent,

The high altitude kit vent is supposed to be mounted exactly where you've
described that yours (Joel's) is located. It is located directly BELOW the
single combined intake/exhaust vent that Kent has on his EVC, on the flat
surface of the body panel. Kent --- drop by a dealer and take a look at a
new EVC to see exactly where it is located. Better yet, just have the
dealer install the kit for you. Its my understanding that the retrofit on
the '97's is free (at least that's what mine cost earlier this year, and
others have subsequently also had that experience).

As for exact location, if you decide to install it yourself Kent, mine is
exactly 17" below the original single vent (center to center dimension).
Good luck.

Sheldon

The high-altitude kit came already installed on my 97 EVC. The second
vent is mounted on the flat surface of the body panel, not on the seam,
and is vertically aligned with the other vent. My understanding from
other posts to this list is that the vent mounts above the existing
vent, which, unfortunately, places it right under the window, but that
is how it was designed.
