In Massachusetts some have registered their VWs as a "camper" by adding a

regular van. Of course, this doesn't apply with the old vans. However, the
Eurovan is indeed a recreational vehicle. How many normal cars have propane

The rate is lower because a) people who drive RV's tend to be pretty safe
and b) people tend not to drive RV's as often as a regular auto.

I would talk to another agent.

I tried to get an RV policy for my '74 Westy and was told that it had to
have
a permanent restroom on board to qualify. However, I found and even better
deal on a "recreational use" policy through State Farm. No mileage
requirements, full coverage and for only $200 a year. I don't think it
would
cover the interior contents, but make sure you send them a list of all of
your added accessories like furnace, bike rack, awning, stereo, or any other

Re: EV: VW Parts Distribution / Do you really want a VW?

I enjoyed the use of a BMW 325i while my EVC sat at the
dealer for 10 days last month. The dealership didn't order the
part when I asked them to, and it wasn't there when my service
appt. was scheduled two weeks later. So the van sat for over
a week until they retrieved the part [rear hub/bearing assmbly]
from Canada. (To make matters worse, the hub had been ruined
by an incompetent tire shop mechanic who happily stripped 3 of 5
bolt holes with his pneumatic wrench!)

The BMW was slight consolation for the frustration and wasted time.
This dealer was one of those German Eurocar types: BMW, Mercedes,
Porsche, VW. We don't have a "real" VW dealer within 250 miles.
At the time I was convinced that the dealership was solely to blame;
perhaps this IS a more systemic VW problem. I was, however, enjoying
comiserating with disgruntled Mercedes and Porsche owners, who
were also getting shafted ;)

OTOH, what choice do you have if you want the functionality of an
EVC?

Re: EV: 2000 EV Warranty

Wade,

I would suspect its not a lack of confidence, but a realization that
vans and cabriolets are subject to a rougher life....

Cabriolets are more exposed to the elements because they are not a
solid body...they also are subject to more stress and strain because of
not having a roof (my wife's cabriolet squeaks and flexes more with the
top down)...

Vans because they are heavier and carry heavier loads will put more of
a strain on the engine, etc.

Yes, their powertrain warranty is better than most, 10 years or

Re: EV: VW Parts Distribution / Do you really want a VW?

Wade,
I don't disagree with your comments on the situation with parts for the
EuroVan in the USA. VW has a problem here and so do many manufacturers with
very low volume. It's part of the experience of owning a unique vehicle.
Usually this becomes a nice opportunity for aftermarket parts suppliers. I
do however feel the situation is better for VW's more popular models. I have
not experieced any parts issuse on the Rabbits and Golfs I've owned since
1975. Comparing the Tercel parts situation to a EuroVan is tough because
Toyota has sold many more of them in the USA. In any event, improvement in
the EV parts situation would be welcome. Hopefully VW will sell many more
here and thus become more interested.

Re: '99 MV wanted + advice?

Brandon,
I travel to Germany on business once or twice a year. I always try to stop
by a VW dealer and find it amazing how much more is available on the T4
platform. My favorite version is the dual sliding door model. VW has had
this feature for many years in Germany but never offered it in the USA. I
even suspect they had it before Chrysler. The VW version is also more
thought out since the gas filler neck is in front of the door rather than
behind. Too bad USA VW Marketing people have missed the boat on this option
that for some is a necessity on a van. I wonder how many people remove the
EV from consideration because it isn't available here.

A new air cleaner filter, plugs (Platinum 4), plug wires, distributor

Is BG the name brand of the injector cleaner? Where did you purchase it?

Re: '99 MV wanted + advice?

Brandon,
To clarify the seat /seatbelts a bit more, what I saw in Germany on a
new
Multivan were center seats that can be positioned to face either
forward or
backward and modular shoulder belts on these center seats. USA MV
models in
1993 and 1999 have rear facing seats only with lap belts. I now
suspect
the 2000 North American MV still is the same based on reading the
specs on
VW's web site. Did you notice differently?

I did some checking, and when I saw the MV interior shots on the VW
German website, I can see that they are very different from the US
seats. The US seats are clearly fixed rearward. I'm asking my dealer if
the swiveling seats (which also have a headrest and full shoulder belt)
can be special ordered. I'm also interested in a non us color like
that great new beetle lime green.

Thanks for the heads up. It's neat to see on the german site all the
funky colors and much nicer interiors the german EVs have.

Mike, you ought to check the archives of the quattro list

I know in the past ur quattro owners have used eurovan 2.5L blocks as
bases for new engines. With the AAN, you have so many other, easier
options to increase HP, I've never heard of anyone attempting this.
Now, a chipped AAN in a eurovan, hmmm... makes you really miss synchro.

Given the complexity of the job, I would either recommend either DIY
if
you're mechanically competent, or take it to a VW dealer with real EV
experience. Even with the right tools, it is a long job, and I'm sure
the labor, expecially for the water pump, is expensive.
As a hardcore Audi fan, I might also suggest that any Audi dealer or
better yet, Audi-knowledgeable garage would be quite at home with the
EV 5. The tools are so well known on the Audi email lists that
everyone refers to them by number.

For my 1999 EV Weekender I am seeking the after market gutters for supporting Yakima towers and bars on which to carry our FOLBOT Kayak from camp site to water and back again.? For travel, the kayak is in it's bags inside under the bed.? I hope to determine how to remove the Yakima bars quickly for raising the poptop when arriving back at the camp site.

Also, I will be soon sending my 1968 Chevelle Wagon to someone elses driveway and wish to have my EV as versatile as possible for carrying what-ever.

I am also hoping that I can figure out how to mount an awning directly or indirectly using the gutters in some way.

I was at local dealer today looking for Corrado parts. The parts manual is
on CD. He said it contained everything VW ever made. I told him sure would
like to have one or at least put it up on their web page. He said same
thing, that thought it would be available but did not have any idea when.
Thought web page was good idea.

BTW - Spark plugs (correct) for the Corrado are 15.84 each from VW
aftermarket shop - dealer was about .75 more.

Re: hard starts, under-hood temp

Tell them you want to have an engine compression test run on each
cylinder. TELL THEM YOU WANT TO SEE THE NUMBERS! The 5 numbers should
at least be within 10% of each other. If you have one or two cylinders
reading low,
you could have a coolant leak via the head gasket. That might explain
the hard starting (coolant leaks into cylinder(s) making it hard to
start) AND the loss of coolant.

You better hurry, if this is the cause, they will have to replace the
head gasket and resurface the head (a side benifit of having the head
removed; they have to replace the coolant, oil, and timing belt). The
good news they pick up the tab. In 11 days YOU do.

One thing for sure, I think that I will certainly ask my dealer to

and the hard starting are linked.

I still have the benefit of a (informal, but binding, as far as I'm

ungodly
road noise from the front right tire.

I will certainly keep the list posted.

What exactly was done with your "complete tuneup"?

Jerry,
I've noticed over the past half year or so a decrease in fuel milage,
from 18-19 around town to a constant 16, from 21-22 on the road to
18-19 mpg. I gave it a complete tuneup which didn't improve the mpg
and was stumped. Recently though I've had a bad rattling under the van
which turned out to be inside the cat. So I think it's a mechanical
failure of the cat internals.

Re: EV Cat

Had mine replaced today with a generic (smaller) unit with a two year
warranty. How did I know that the original was bad? Because of the
loud
clanking noises that it made and by the way that the core plugged up
the
pipe and prevented the exhaust gasses from escaping. Lost all power
but
would still idle. Hitting the cat with a hammer got me going again
(to
the muffler shop). It's running fine now.

I got a look at the old one after it had been removed - the entire
honeycombed core was floating around loose inside and pieces of it had
broken off.

To add to my day we found cracks in the resonator and the muffler, a
broken exhaust pipe hangar (rubber thing upstream of the cat), the
heat
shield between the exhaust and the gas tank has lost its front mount
and
is dangling and the CV boots are shredded. But those things can
wait...
