Gas Tank is releasing dangerous fumes

Dan Phalen

After convincing myself that my evap system charcoal canister was the
reason my gas tank was building up substantial pressure, releasing
fumes and causing gurgling noises coming from the tank, I tried one last
thing. I replaced the evap purge regulator, a 15 minute job with no tools
required!

After changing the EVAP purge regulator in Santa Fe, everything functioned
perfectly with no pressure build up all the way to Denver and beyond?

I've attached a photo of the location behind the antifreeze reservoir. And
here is the link to the $40.00 part for my 97 EVC

Seems like this is a good place to start for anyone with this problem as
it is quick and cheap.

Clearly, altitude and temperature are factors as others have pointed out on
the EVC website. We will continue on our trip while monitoring the
situation.

I've had some anxious days over this.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my problem has been solved once and for
all....

My problem was the hose from the valve to the regulator( bad crimp) and the regulator. Dropped the tank- replaced the hose and the regulator - and all is well.

If you have a valve problem- you will probably have to replace the tank- don't know if the valve comes off easily. Usually the fill valve and the level indicator are OK!

I found that most propane dealers are not equipped to deal with these problems. That's why I just ordered all new parts from Europarts.com ( there may be other sources- don't know). I tried to find someone to make me a new hose- but no takers.

Thanks for posting about your propane project. What exactly did you
do? Hoses, on-off LP valve, regulator? Did you empty the tank? Did you
replace the LP fill valve too?

Working with propane, did you do the work outdoors?

2002 EV fuel pressure regulator replacement

I have a faulty fuel pressure regulator on a 2002 EV. It looks like the intake manifold has to come off to replace it. Has anyone replaced one without pulling the manifold?

Re: Load Reduction Relay - SOLVED

After a number of false starts, I figured out that the problem is.... the
IGNITION SWITCH. The same switch that I replaced a few weeks ago! Very
confusing. I confirmed this after taking apart the dash, bypassing the
position 4 (labeled "18") load reduction relay, and finally wiggling the
ignition switch connectors on the back side and getting the circuit to cut
out and back in.

Maybe the replacement switch was bad? Maybe there's a secondary problem
in the key tumbler/cylinder?

The good news is that NAPA auto parts has them in stock, so I didn't have
to wait for the VW dealer to open Monday morning.

I also learned a few things about the European relays, and I'll write up
some notes when I return.

Thanks for your help!

Seems like that may be the "X relay"?

Europarts SD sells them:??

Hope this helps...

Load Reduction Relay Help Please

2000 Eurovan Camper. A few weeks ago I noticed something odd with the
starting behavior (turn key, no start on occasion) and replaced the
ignition switch. I thought that solved the problem, however, I think
that wasn't the actual issue, since I'm on the road now and a new behavior
has emerged: Turn the key, start the van and it runs fine, but the
dashboard remains dark (all gauges off except for the BRAKE light which is
illuminated), the windshield wipers don't work. A few days ago this was
intermittent - if I restarted the van again a couple of times it would
work normally, but this morning it seems like the failure mode is not
going away.

Does the Eurovan have a "load reduction relay" that powers all of these
circuits? Which relay # is it? I have a voltmeter, small toolkit, and a
laptop so could probably get VCDS Lite running (if that would help
diagnose).

Extremely grateful thanks in advance to any help offered.

Mike

Re: 97 eurovan propane tank

My OEM tank started "hissing" back in 2012, and I was hoping to be able to repair it as Sam had. No such luck. My leak emanated from the female service port.. where some idiot had overtightened it fracturing the threads. Once apart, the propane tech pronounced it irrepairable. Bottom-line... new tank for $450 from GoWesty. New one had a different stone guard, giving me an extra inch of ground clearance, but same same mounting, and included the interior half of the remote level gauge. My old exterior half worked, and I have yet to figure out how to remount it securely, being inherently lazy...... ?no way should any of us accept a leaky propane tank

EGR error fixed (I hope)

Mark Hollingsworth

Well, I've spent quite awhile working to fix the EGR flow error that was on my 2000 MV (for the last several years according to the PO)
I didn't want to just toss new parts on it, but to find the actual ad part/wiring or whatever.

Finally I found the solenoid that controls the vacuum to the EGR was bad.
I did some searching, finally found one I was assured was correct (even though it was called something else) for a Better price than the $289 from the dealer.

So,far, it seems great, no codes, no pending codes. I started to do the full 'Readiness test' but my old laptop was acting up. So I just cleared codes and drove it for a few hours- mixed hiway, stopping, idling, town ect.
It never has gone this long, so I think it may be fixed.

It got here overnight, free shipping- exactly correct part.

I rebuilt my propane system last year- had a leak in one of the hoses ( poor factory crimp). Europarts.com has quite a selection of propane parts. Got all my parts from them. Was quite a job to drop the tank- but also saved a whole lot of money!

Have any Ontario owners run into this before and is there any way around it? Thought about having it checked next time we were in the states. or do they have the same rule?

MAP Sensor

Hello all --
My mechanic shows a map sensor fault, an oxygen sensor fault and a secondary air fault on my 1995 EVC, but he says the entire ECM needs to be replaced because the MAP sensor is integral to the ECM.? That's apparently a costly job in terms of time and money.? Does that sound right?? Primary symptom is significantly decreased power under load.? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Re: Gas Tank is releasing dangerous fumes

Hi Dan?
Thank you for sharing. We recently bought a 1995 Eurovan Camper Van and I will make sure we do not top off with gas or overfill the gas tank!
We are the 3rd owner and the previous owners took quite good care of the vehicle.?

Hi August and all?

Here is what I have learned?regarding Gas tank fumes and the Evap System Charcoal Canister.
Back before emission standards, fumes from the tank were released directly?into the environment via a?vent. The tank was an open system. When emission controls entered the scene, the open system was replaced by a closed system to prevent fumes from being released.?
The Evap canister is designed to accumulate fumes from the gas tank so that they can be burned, thus eliminating releases into the environment as well as preventing?pressure build up?in the tank. The canister is filled with charcoal particles to absorb tank fumes that can then be burned. There is a fan upstream of the canister that is activated when you turn on the engine. This forces the stored fumes into the fuel system to be burned rather ?than released. The problem arises if gas somehow gets into the canister which is only designed for fumes.?
This can happen if you over fill the tank by topping it off after the fill up shuts off automatically. The intake for the fumes, located at the top of the tank?takes in liquid gas. The gas then dissolves the charcoal which then clogs the system preventing the fumes from burning off and building pressure in the tank. If just a little gas gets in, the clog may be rather minimal just leading to minor pressure build up. If a lot of gas gets in, the charcoal can dissolve into a sort of muddy mess that completely clogs and shuts down the system. At that point, the only fix is to replace the canister which can cost up to $1,000 or so (I may be off on the price).?
If, however, the gas in the canister is minimal, the diminished capacity may be just a minor annoyance you can live with. Some have had success removing the canister and blowing out the liquids with an air hose. This is more likely to be successful if the amount of gas is minimal.?
The issue is exacerbated when it is hot, and at higher altitudes. I am currently in Santa Fe at 7,000 feet with 90 degree plus temperatures during the heat of the day. The fume and pressure build up is much greater during the day. When it cools down at night, 60 degrees or so, the pressure build up is far less.?
In my case, i think that a lot of gas got in. When I shut off the engine, I hear a gurgling noise coming from under the van that is presumably gas gurgling in the canister. Yesterday I had a shop remove the canister and blow air through it to open it up and force out as much gas as possible. Some folks have had success with this approach. I have yet to determine if this works for me. I'll report back in another post.
As far as safety goes, everything I've read and been told unanimously says this is not an issue. I've also been told that the tank can take considerable pressure. This is from web sites on various vehicles. While this may be true, my tank builds up so much pressure on very hot days that I'm not willing to take the risk. I fear that a hose or line might fail.?
Next week we are headed for Montana and then back to Seattle. My wife and I alternate drivers about every 200 miles, and we will be opening the gas cap each time we stop?to keep the pressure low.
We'll see how this goes. When we return to Seattle, we will decide whether or not to replace the canister. As long as we keep the tank pressure low, I'm not concerned about safety for the duration of the trip.?Back in cooler Seattle at sea level, this may be less of a problem.
This is probably way more detailed information than you were expecting. If anyone can add to this or if I have gotten any of the facts wrong, please straighten me out.?
In the mean time I intend to enjoy the rest of the summer...
Dan

You can find the fuse box to the left of the drivers steering wheel.
Look down and you will see a black plastic circle type knob. Use a flat head screw driver to carefully pop it up, then it's like a plastic screw. Take it off carefully and do not loose it. Open the grey plastic cover and you will see all the fuses. Your manual will tell you what the numbered fuses are for.
Hope this explanation is helpful.

I mean the production run on these campers ended in North America more than 10 years ago.??? I have owned both the Winnebago and Westfalia converted campers and I am pretty sure the tanks are not identical.?? German tanks for the Eurovan Westfalias are still available from the fatherland from vwbusshop? click on the Union Jack for English. and find the T4 camper.

Re: EVC Roof Vent/Skylight Solutions

Bob,

You might be able to find a variable speed vent with low profile base on fleabay (that's what I did) and then order flat lid/lift arm/euro garnish from any of the dealers.

Here's the one I got off fleabay:

Re: EVC Roof Vent/Skylight Solutions

David,

Have fixed the existing vent with methylene chloride (tricky stuff to work with - ?like water) and some additional supports on underside epoxied on. ?Will spray paint it all gloss black and should look fine. ?Will post photos.

?

I did read through all those instructions from Albert and then contacted him. ?He referred me to ?, who can put together a Fantastic Vent with low profile base and flat lid - total is 2.5" above roof. ?Went out this am and measured my clearance - I have 3.25"!! ?(plus another .75" for "insurance" if I remove a piece of molding). ?I have emailed for price quote with those extra options. ?Unfortunately, they only sell 3 speed fans.?

So a fan vent may be in the future for me. ?Will post more info as I learn more.
