We bought our Canandian imported Eurovan a year ago at Carter in
Seattle. We do not have any piston slap; no problems at all after a
year. We went on a short trip to the Oregon coast and the Cascades in
Oregon in July. I drive it to work every day (about 9 miles one-way).
I have one question: The read-out 'screen' on the ceiling console
blinks 15.1 volts when it is supposed to be reading the stored volts of
the aux. battery. (When that battery is being used, like to run the
frig., it reads lower, accordingly). Does anyone know what the 15.1
volts blink means???
Thanks. - Jay

'93 EV Turns 100K and Auto Trans service

The '93 EV MV just turned 100K and we took it in for a little service this
past week. I had the transmission fluid and filter changed and the mount
replaced.

I don't drive this very much, as my wife has taken it over and with her job
and running the kids around, I hardly ever see it.

I drove it to the auto parts store yesterday and noticed that it is a bit
quieter and shifts smoother. There was no clunking between 3rd and 4th. I'm
not sure if this is a result of the replaced mount or the fluid change.

At 100K, we have put 28K miles on it in 10 months. The Nokian tires are
holding up very well with lots of miles left on them. The EV has held up
quite well, and I am trying to concentrate on getting all the normal service
items checked. I now carry a spare serpentine and timing belt, and will have
the brakes inspected this week.

New shocks may be in the future, but I did not notice any problems with the
old ones. The fuel line situation still needs to be resolved. I was hoping
VW would come through and replace them for free.

We are very happy with the EV as long as the head gasket doesn't need to be
replaced. I'll check my extended warranty, however it only claims to cover
"failure of internally lubricated parts"

Other than the fuel line problem, seam rust, and the AT mount, we have not
experienced (yet) any of the other common problems.

I haven't had a chance to check this out for myself, but I will take a look
and have the mechanic show me where it is leaking.

I suspect it may not be the head gasket.

Re: EV MV Search

If you plan to hold on to the vehicle for some time (if you have yound
children for example) by the 99. It is a much better mechanical
package (better engine, current transmission, brakes) than the 5 cyl
set up. Plus you get all the benefits of owning a new vehicle vs a
used.

When I discussed my fuel line leak with the VW Rep., he informed me that the
spring clamps should be used when the rubber hose is connected to a plastic
fuel line. He said that this was the practise on all of the new VWs.

I mentioned that spring clamps were used on the EV even when the rubber hose
was fitted to metal. The Rep said that this didn't sound right.

My leak was caused by the rubber getting old and swelling and thus not
sealing. I replaced the spring clamps with the adjustable type and this
seemed to work for a while. I've since had the hoses leak again, and I
retighted the clamps to stop it.

If I can find the correct rubber hose, I'm going to replace only the rubber
and the crimped on fittings and go from there.

My 82 Westy came with a fire extinguisher. I guess is VW knew something
then. Always a good idea - think about it, gas, rubber/plastic fuel lines,
heat, sparks...etc hummmmmm.

I have a 93 and also have looked at these lines and will continue to do
so.
I have carried a fire extinguisher since I owned it and am thinking of
getting the kind that goes under the hood and is automatic. I have
pulled and tugged these lines at different times and do not worry as
long as the clamps are tight. I will keep checking them though.

I would not recommend anyone to repair these themself. If you have a
fire and did it yourself VW is off the hook. If you request a dealer
to repair something that they are told is not wrong by VW they can only
repair it with the same parts that are on it or they become liable.

VW really needs to do something about this NOW. Before more than just a
van is lost. Look what happened to Fisher Price on the little 12v
Jeeps before they were recalled. Kids burnt, Whole houses burned down.
My EV is parked in the driveway not in the Garage. VW are you
listening!

Get the fire extinguishers Now! and keep an eye on it. Let a dealer
fix it if it leaks. I am the first to be a DIY but not on this.

Re: Fuel Line inspection -Not a DIY'r fix

Yes, I agree this is not a DIY repair. I have decided to switch cars with my
wife until this is resolved. I can no longer feel safe with my family in
this vehicle. I will use it for my short commute to work with a fire
extinguisher under the seat. I'm also calling my VW dealer tomorrow and
scheduling the lines to be replaced. Thanks to all for bringing this serious
safety issue to my attention. I hope VW is listening because the longer they
wait the less likely I am to ever buy another VW product.

Re: Fuel Line inspection

Yes, I suppose a bump could jar this connection too. I am concerned enough
that I am making a daily inspection. My concern is what is is the right clamp
to use. A spring type clamp appear to be a poor choice since I have read
that it too will leak after awhile if it is not tightened periodically.
That's just not an acceptable fix. I wonder what would happen if an owner
modifies the connections and then they fail causing extensive damage. Would
VW would take the position that the original system was modified and
therefore take no responsibility. Maybe the right thing to do is schedule a
visit to VW dealer and have them document the potential problem and have them
change the entire system as originally designed.

Get the color adjusted on on your TV!
it was a Burgandy GL 93 on mine. I counted 4 shots of it durning the
soccer game. Would of got the plate # but I had to look at Jasmine some
time!
And Alex calls the show Cheesey.... Well I am from WI and I like
cheese!
It is plain old couch potato entertainment. Seems VW likes that show.
I have seen a lot of VW's on there from time to time. Passat was on
there before the dealers even had them.

I also saw an EV on This Old House this week but they were visiting
over seas. (kind of like cheating) It had a raised roof with forward
facing skylights over the rear seat area with the slider door open.
Like a Road Trek Look.

Once you own one seems they just stick out in the crowd.

The VR6 is great.
Guess I am just dreaming. Maybe you can get the dealer to install some

Sorry you have to be shopping, But glad you still can. Do you wish you

Re: EV MV Search - airbags

Yegs,

Sure thing, If I don't get that '99 EV MV Weekender myself, I'll let you all
know what I discover.

As far as the airbag goes, I didn't need it in my situation, the shoulder
strap was sufficient. My shoulder isn't even sore from the impact. I'm sure
an airbag would have inflated and increased the repair cost. Do I want
airbags? Yes.

John

Re: Fuel Line inspection

You might be OK if you never touch or jiggle the lines. But fate may
not be so kind. A large bump in the road might be enough. Mine seemed
to leak right after I had to replace a coolant hose in the same area. I
would not advise anyone to drive an EV without replacing these crimp
fittings with "real" clamps
As for the pressure, it is not high for any fuel injection system. In
fact it is alot lower then the old CIS systems used in rabbits.

Re: '99 MV wanted + advice?

Rumors of the demise of the EV are greatly exaggerated, as the 2000
models are already on these shores. I doubt that they'd abandon the EV,
but they certainly don't push it.

Salespeople tend to have less knowledge on this subject than one would
hope for, but they're certainly ready and willing to answer any
question (with any answer).

From: RBIEGEL@...

Freeze up of rear brakes is common problem on the EV. I've locked mine in
cold weather on at least two occasions. Try to avoid using the parking brake
when you know they are wet and it will sit overnight in cold weather.
Ron
I had the problem on occasion. Upon inspecting under the van, I noticed
that there is a spring on the emergency brake cable, where it splits off to
each wheel. The mount for this had broken. I rigged it up again, and now
the problem is gone.
