Re: shocks & wearing tires square- rambling. .

I was getting deep grooves in a diag pattern across the tire. These
were so bad that the tire would hop up and down even when rolled by
hand across the driveway. It was making the kids sick in the back at
60 mph. Typical of a bad shock and alignment problems. The van always
tracked straight.
Also was told the G60s start to loose their belts as the tread wears
down.
The tire was not round any more. One shop showed me two others he
took off of another EV and they looked just like mine Square. I
believe it was the shocks.

Re: Light bulbs for switches?

Chris Noeske

I know for a fact that the following light bulbs are not replaceable.
Main AC control panel and, Headlight switch.
The rear heater/ AC controls have light bulbs that can be replaced, if you
remove the rear most panel off of the switch.

It seems that all of the car makers are going to the practice of tack
welding the lightbulbs into the switches and panels. Fewer parts, automated
labor, more profit for the stockholders!

Does anyone know the p/n and source for the bulbs that provide the
back-lighting in the rocker switches(headlight etc...)?. VW says that
the switch assy. is not repairable.

RIP 93 GL

David R. Johnson

Well, dear friends, I'm afraid my trusty 93 GL has been unexpectedly retired.? I was struck by an inattentive driver last week, and the damage has resulted in a "total loss" declaration.? No injuries to my 11 year old or me, but the van's a goner.? We were struck in the left front by another car that failed to see me in the right lane.? We ended up in a ditch of muddy, stinking water with a bad list to starboard.? Significant body damage and untold mechanical damage.? Broken tie rod for sure, possible front end drive damage, too.

One one hand, I was hoping for a possible repair since the van's been paid off for a few years now.? On the other hand, it would never run the same.? I'm sick about having to replace a fully functional lien free vehicle and incur those dastardly monthly payments.? Ugh.

I'm waiting on the opening low ball from the adjuster, and the degrading process of settling up.? It's almost as frustrating as buying a new car.? The only good thing I've been able to determine is that I don't have to worry about leaking fuel lines, a clunky transmission, ordering new Bilstein's, and a cranky starter anymore.

I'm now searching for a replacement.? I would really like to stay with an EV, since I've grown very attached to my old van.? After 157,000 miles, I feel like I know them pretty well.? This list and the Maller predecessor have been invaluable for long term ownership and maintenance.? My bride is quietly pushing for a Honda Odyssey.? We're not considering any other vehicles at this point.? I can tell you that both vans are hard to find.? The Honda's are in high demand and short supply even though production is increasing.? The new EV's are hard to find simply because most VW dealers don't want to carry them.? Of the five VW dealers in Dallas/Ft. Worth, only two will order them.? If anyone knows of a dealer with some inventory, I'd appreciate a heads-up.? Delivery between dealers is an easy task.

I've been driving Granny's new Olds Delta.? It's a nice ride, but not a van.? Go without your van for a few days and you'll really appreciate the versatility of the EV.? We had soccer tournaments the past two weekends and missed the ability to haul cargo, kids, coolers and two friendly large dogs.

The carcass is silently sitting at a body shop in Greenville, Texas, awaiting disposition.? I have no intention of releasing it until I've settled.? If I know where it ends up, I'll let the list know.? There are several servicable parts that could be scavenged.? The motor was working fine with lots of life remaining.

If any of you are aware of a dealer with some inventory or a low mileage used 99, please email me at 'drj9009@...'.?? Thanks a bunch.

David

Re: Vanagon wheels fit 93 EV weekender???

I tried to swap my 86 vanagon wheels with my 93 EV. Vanagon is 14 "
and the EV is 15 but the overall tire height is the same. No GO. The
center holes are a different size. Gave up and did not check the set
back. If I recall The EV will go to the Vanagon But not the other way
around. If you have 15" alloys you might get lucky.

Will these fit on my 93 Weekender??

Re: rear foglight VW part numbers -Reply

Dave,
I checked with my friendly neighborhood VW dealer on this. It requires
changing out the light switch for one that has a pull out switch for the
fog or driving lamps. Can't recall just what the total cost for the
parts was going to be, but it was so far out of reach that I completely
gave up on the ides (seems like it was 1200 or so).

it is made up of 3 pieces:

1ho-953-123 bulb holder

I'd rate it as OK, certainly not bad or a disaster. I've been through
2 Colorado winters with my '97 EVC with nothing but the pathetic OEM
Goodyear tires and not had any problems. For that matter, I've lived
in Colorado for more than 30 years and have seldom had snow tires. In
the front range area of Colorado where I live, we get snow often, but
it is uncommon for it to stay on the roads for more than a few days at
a time. Good all-season radials with good tread on them are OK most of
the time. If you need to drive in winter weather conditions (deep
snow, or snow and ice), often then snow tires are probably a good idea.

The weight and front-wheel drive help overcome some of the traction
problems of a vehicle this size when starting from a stop. On the
other hand, the weight contributes to much longer stopping distances in
slippery conditions. ABS and traction control help only slightly.
They are no substitute for careful driving.

I don't have the part numbers for the front fogs, but you can order the parts
from your VW dealer. I spoke with Shawn at Camelback VW last week and we
compared my German parts book with his. The fog light page was there, but on
the page with the rear fog lights, the whole illustration was missing.

I posted the URL for these pages recently. I think it was

And no, I'm not selling these parts, just posted this info for your enjoyment.

You can print out the foglight page and take it to your dealer to help you
out. The page numbers will match.

Norman,

I'm almost embarassed to admit it...but it wasn't a fancy fire
extinguisher, just a run of the mill $9.95 dry-powder extinguisher that
I bought at Home De Pot. If there was an advantage that I had was
safety steward training I received when I was heavily involved in SCCA.
Basically....you never completely open the hood immediately. You crack
the hood, spray at least one or two good bursts inside the hood, then
open the hood and attack the base of the flames.

That initial burst is enough to keep the flames down so what when the
hood is opened and that burst of fresh oxygen hits the fire, the fire
doesn't flare up (or doesn't flare up as much).

Re: V6 Disappointing tire mileage--14,000

If the tires are wearing evenly (i.e., no sign of underinflation), I would
have to guess that the cause is the tire itself. You will have better
mileage with the Agilis 51s.

I vaguely recall a post about this a few months ago. A spacer had been

left off in the installation or something like that which allowed the

shocks to move up an down. Sorry I can't be more specific. Might try

John, thanks. Actually, that earlier post was mine. After the Bilsteins
were installed, I heard a clunk from the both sides of the front end (the
same location as the squeak now), when I went over a speed bump or a small
pothole. I took it back to the repair shop and they said that the Bilsteins
were the source. They told me that the shaft on the top of the Bilsteins was
longer than the VW shock and that they would have to cut it down and add a
bushing to make it work. Hmmmmm, I am wondering if this was all a bunch of
BS.
