Well, dear friends, I'm afraid my trusty 93 GL has been unexpectedly retired.?
I was struck by an inattentive driver last week, and the damage has resulted
in a "total loss" declaration.? No injuries to my 11 year old or me,
but the van's a goner.? We were struck in the left front by another
car that failed to see me in the right lane.? We ended up in a ditch
of muddy, stinking water with a bad list to starboard.? Significant
body damage and untold mechanical damage.? Broken tie rod for sure,
possible front end drive damage, too.
One one hand, I was hoping for a possible repair since the van's been
paid off for a few years now.? On the other hand, it would never run
the same.? I'm sick about having to replace a fully functional lien
free vehicle and incur those dastardly monthly payments.? Ugh.
I'm waiting on the opening low ball from the adjuster, and the degrading
process of settling up.? It's almost as frustrating as buying a new
car.? The only good thing I've been able to determine is that I don't
have to worry about leaking fuel lines, a clunky transmission, ordering
new Bilstein's, and a cranky starter anymore.
I'm now searching for a replacement.? I would really like to stay
with an EV, since I've grown very attached to my old van.? After 157,000
miles, I feel like I know them pretty well.? This list and the Maller
predecessor have been invaluable for long term ownership and maintenance.?
My bride is quietly pushing for a Honda Odyssey.? We're not considering
any other vehicles at this point.? I can tell you that both vans are
hard to find.? The Honda's are in high demand and short supply even
though production is increasing.? The new EV's are hard to find simply
because most VW dealers don't want to carry them.? Of the five VW
dealers in Dallas/Ft. Worth, only two will order them.? If anyone
knows of a dealer with some inventory, I'd appreciate a heads-up.?
Delivery between dealers is an easy task.
I've been driving Granny's new Olds Delta.? It's a nice ride, but
not a van.? Go without your van for a few days and you'll really appreciate
the versatility of the EV.? We had soccer tournaments the past two
weekends and missed the ability to haul cargo, kids, coolers and two friendly
large dogs.
The carcass is silently sitting at a body shop in Greenville, Texas,
awaiting disposition.? I have no intention of releasing it until I've
settled.? If I know where it ends up, I'll let the list know.?
There are several servicable parts that could be scavenged.? The motor
was working fine with lots of life remaining.
If any of you are aware of a dealer with some inventory or a low mileage
used 99, please email me at 'drj9009@...'.?? Thanks
a bunch.
