Subject: [ev_update] 93 EV Engine Fire Last night got to use my fire extinguisher....unfortunately it was on my 93 EV (which I've owned since new...). I popped out to buy my wife a little surprise, and was heading home on the highway doing about 70 when the A/C vents started to blow out thick black smoke. I put the EV in neutral, shut the engine down and tried to slow down into the breakdown lane...NO BRAKES! I used the emergency brake to stop. Grabbed the extinguisher popped the hood a crack and began spraying and then fully opened the hood and put the rest of the fire out. It looks like a good part of the hoses and wiring in the engine compartment are toast! Hopefully the EV can be put back together. '93 GL..rear side windows and/or roof vent?
Bill Salopek
Hey guys,
My '93 GL has, as you know, just the two front windows that open. I'd like to add some more ventilation (I have rear A/C, and it does quite well, but better airflow would be apprictaed when the A/C isn't really needed). I'm thinking of two possibilities: 1) replacing the side windows...the sliding door window and the window opposite, with camper or "MV" windows...the ones where 1/2 the window slides open. 2) installing some kind of roof vent in the rear somplace Thoughts and opinions? Thanks... -- Bill Salopek ICQ: 20536257 No worries... Business: Home: |
'93 Eurovan Losing Power (Resolved!)
After all the many helpful replies I received about my loss of power problem
I wanted to report that last Thursday finally made the decision to get the catalytic converter replaced by a Meineke shop on the calculated probability that the CC was the culprit. Turns out that the CC was VERY clogged (as the technician showed me, once he had removed it). The new one cost $235 installed, which is a far cry from the $800-plus VW wanted. The Eurovan now runs fine, without the progressive power loss and heat I was having, and I fully expect to survive at least long enough to witness the turn of the millennium. But a few points: Since the installation of the new CC, I can tell that I am getting just a little less power when accelerating than I used to have (before the CC problem). This is more noticeable in 4th and 5th gears, especially if I am climbing. Should I be concerned about this? I'm assuming the air flow on the new CC (being generic) may be a little different than on the standard VW part. The technician who replaced the CC told me that they don't fail on their own, and that something damaged mine; and he advised me to try to find out what the cause was. He suggested ignition system problems, distributor problems, backfiring, etc. Again, thanks to all who helped me on this. |
Eurovan Fires
TYA
Dear Listmates,
I have not owned a Eurovan for long but one thing that has struck me is the number of "FIRES" in Eurovans. There weren't that many imported to the small underpopulated part of Canada I live in. Yet I know of at least 3 that were destroyed by fire. One in 1993 in a refueling error, and 2 others. The fires were not related to camping but engine compartment /fuel system related. I bring this up not alarm anyone but to point out there may be problems associated with this aspect of EVs and to suggest if you think you have fuel related problems get them checked out NOW> Reg |

where there is a VW dealership only minutes from my house, but they dont deal with EVCs. I found AutoHaus on the Web and eventually purchased from them. They were willing to deal on the price some and actually had an EVC waiting for me when I got there ( 51 miles away ). Their service after the sale has been the best I have seen from any new car dealer. My salesmans name was Jesse 717 299-2801 x 231. You can mention my name he will remember me. This could help you in your negotiations with VW of WV. Good luck. -----Original Message----- |

auction. They have multiple pairs of 4", 5.25" & 6" speaker sets for sale w/the titanium tweeter separated. You could replace the door speakers w/the larger pair and find a way to place the tweeters in the existing dash assembly. (FYI: my set up is the VW 'premium' sound w/tweeters up top and 5"-ers down in the door, so I'm not sure if yours is set-up exactly the same way.) I replaced my door speakers w/5.25" 2-way and left the tweeters up top as well. May try again w/some 6"ers. So far no drop in audio quality based on the additional wattage required. If you look in egghead make sure to visit the Consumer Products/Home Audio as well as the Consumer Products/Automotive Electronics sections as they have inadvertantly left many sets of speakers at the wrong part of the site. Price is usually about $49/set plus shipping and tax if you are in WA state. Good luck. bruce 93 ev wk -----Original Message-----

I replaced mine, which stopped the leak. It started again yesterday and I tightened the clamps to stop it. I may need to replace these lines. I seem to only have the problem when the engine is cold. I posted a few weeks back about the gas leak on my '93. I hope this wasn't what may have caused your fire. I replaced the hose clamps and the leak stopped. Yesterday, I noticed gas smell again. I popped the hood and sure enough, there was a leak. I couldn't tell which hose was leaking, so I tightened all the clamps and it seems to have stopped. It seems to me that the hoses only leak when the engine is cold. Is there extra pressure in the hoses at that point? Something related to the cold start valve? Tomorrow I buy the extinguisher. Wow, Ric, what a way to start off a Sunday morning! I'm sorry to hear of your experience yesterday. Unfortunately, electricals and harnesses are things you don't want to have problems with (ask me how I know..). Do you suppose the cause was the fuel line, or an electrical nature? I know a few years back you fixed a (potential) leak at a fuel line junction, but a lot of us are sitting/driving around with seven year old EVs, possibly waiting for the same thing that happened to you. I remember my first VW, a Type3 SB that was eight years old when I bought it. It started springing leaks in fuel line after fuel line until I finally wised up and just had them all replaced. I would think that '90s German rubber technology is better than '70's German rubber technology, though.. Let us know how this all comes out in the end. Hopefully a "simple" replacement of the affected hoses and wiring harness(es), and you're on the road again. Norman ______________________________________________________ |

John, Thanks,Tad, We were able to deal with Springfield VW on the price but that was well over a year ago. I'd continue to press them and say you can get it elsewhere. There are a couple of dealers up in Pennsylvania that you might check into also. I don't remember their exact locations but calling VW at their 800 # should get you a location. With the resurgence in sales that VW dealers are experiencing, I don't know why they won't offer you a discount off the sticker price. Springfield has been OK with the routine maintenance and one starting problem we had. I've got no complaints with them. Same thing happened to our 93 EV GL on our way home from a camping trip. Only our A/C system was ruined, though. The fire was traced to a faulty air conditioner pump that seized up and caught on fire. Thankfully, I keep a fire extinguisher strapped to the side of the driver's seat. We had both kids and the dog in the van when it happened. Talk about a Chineese fire drill! One thing we learned is that insurance will not pay for damages unless they are caused by fire, so make sure you tell the insurance company that you saw flames, or they will say it was a mechanical problem, and they won't pay. We (and witnesses) saw flames coming out of our engine compartment, so insurance picked up the $2,500+ in repair costs.
