EV fuel lines and clamps
I have been following this thread while I collect the parts to fix my
93. But I have grown confused. I intended to replace the rubber hoses that connect to the black and blue plastic fuel lines. Is this considered enough or do the plastic hoses have to be replaced too. I also intended to replace the spring clamps with high quality german fuel injection clamps. Are the spring clamps considered better or worse then the "normal" fuel injection clamps? I have noticed that on my sisters Audi V6 that they use the high quality german fuel injection clamps, not the spring clamps.. |

New owner; ext.warranty question
Dear EuroVaneers:
We (family of four) just replaced our '84 Westfalia with a '95 GLS. Although we (the older son and I) are still getting over the separation, I am growing to like this new beast. Doesn't have the same 'float' the Vanagon had on the highway, but more than makes up for it with handling and power. One day there will be another Vanagon for me, but it will be air-cooled! :) Should I purchase an extended warranty? I am well aware that a new tranny can cost thousands of dollars, but it is it something that many people have had to replace or fix? The current tech thread is the fuel line question, but are there EV powertrain problems that I might be able to protect myself against with an ext.warranty? I welcome any input; I'm also glad to have found a friendly space for EV drivers! Marcus Elia '95 GLS (Lue) (short for 'blue') (named by #1 son, Piper) Peterborough, Ontario dela@... |
No Leaks Here ...
...yet. Just had my 93 GL in for an oil change at 50K, and with the VW
tech went over the fuel/return lines together, which are still snug, no noticeable deterioration, and no leaks. It's pretty helpful to have a tech/mechanic go over things with you down there if you're not real familiar with fuel injection systems. I thought I was, and I still learned a few things. I decided to not/not replace anything at this time, BUT I will be checking under the overflow tank and around the distributor at each fill-up with a flashlight very carefully. If you've not seen the picture posts of the area in question, which are great, maybe the poster can again give the URL? Scott in Des Moines |

which included the time they spent diagnosing the circuit board problem, so not quite so bad. I imagine a typical shop will charge an hour of labor or so. Someone else asked about the spring clamps: the mechanic we use says as the hoses/fuel lines age, they shrink, and the clamps don't readjust tighter (automatically or otherwise). Considering this is no longer a concern for my family, the price was very affordable. Bill -----Original Message-----

Re: Snow Tire -Reply
Gary Clendening
Dave,
Drove Flying Carpet for two winters in Maine in described snow, slush, ice. Worked fine as long as one remembers the thing weighs three tons....very critical to recall as you try to stop suddenly. The Goodyears seemed acceptable to me for 40,072 miles in all conditions. After hearing of the poor wear that others report for the Goodyears, I can only tell of normal tire maintenance jobs I did...but, I don't ever drive at 80 mph and prefer travelling below 55 so I can see something as I tour. Of course I'm retired and have a choice; we even travel on two lane roads instead of those other fast lane expressways. That may be the difference in tire mileage. One tire was defective and wore badly...square? The other four were fine and I have one left for a spare with my new Agilli's from Mich. Looking forward to a long respite from difficulty but the Goodyears seemed okay. We're still running the original shocks, too. Again, these seem to be effective for our demands. Gary from Maine |

The salesman couldn't tell me how much it would cost and as I live 50 miles from the dealership I wanted this information before I made the 100 mile round trip. I was transferred to the parts manager who claimed that the dealer cost for the center seat was $848.00. Of course I threw a fit since the price that I was quoted at the time of the sale was $500.00. Does anyone have any information on what this seat actually cost? I was finally able to convince this dealership to sell me the seat for the $500.00 that they originally claimed I would have to pay. Re: Spotted a 92 EVC
Gene Stampfer
FYI
Just happened to be driving by a VW dealer in London, Ontario. I was surprised to see an EVC on the lot that looked really spotless. I asked the dealer to let me have a look at it. This unit looks like it just rolled out of a showroom. It was spotless, not a mark or scratch anywhere. The person who owned this unit (and probably his wife) must have spent all his/their time giving it lots of TLC. Even the ash tray and cup holders were lined with rubber pads to prevent scratches. It is a white 92 Westy, automatic, a/c, central door locks, equpped with a side awning and rear bike rack. It has 115,000 km./ 71,500 miles and the asking price is CA $ 23,900 / approx. $15,000 US If anyone is interested, I can get more details. Gene Stampfer 92 EVGL / 300,000 km and still going strong. |
