bilstein shocks again
Alexis Neely
Hi! We want to put the bilstein shocks on our 97EVC.
Our mechanic called Bilstein and they said they don't make em for this model. I know that some of you have said that the shocks that fit the 93-96 will fit, but have any of you with a 97 EVC put them on? Thanks, Alexis __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! Messenger. |

4Motion
Blaine
Just got the spring 2000 copy of VW Driver. It has an article on the
4Motion VW AWD system that is now available in North America, but only on the Passat. I have sent an e-mail to VWoA asking them to add the 4Motion option for EV's. If others are interested in getting 4Motion EV's in North America also send VWoA an e-mail indicating your interest (it never hurts to ask, well almost never). It would be great to see 4Motion EVC's in NA. Also listed in this issue is a VW Event "50th Anniversary of the production of the bus" May 21, Auburn Hills, MI check it out at Blaine |
Vibration Damper Center Bolt
Kit
To start off, my apologies to Donald Gibbons for mis-informing him that
the Vibration Damper (which also drives the serpentine belt on the 5 cyl. Eurovan motor), is only held by four bolts with 13 mm. heads to the crankshaft sprocket similar to how AUDI designed it in their automobiles. I stand corrected. Part of my visual confusion had to do with the poor rendering of illustartions in the Bentley manual. On the Eurovan, the vibration damper is held in place to the crankshaft sprocket by four bolts with Allen heads, AND the crankshaft center bolt. Why VW decided to do it this way, I do not know. There is no way to get to the Timing belt without crossing swords with this monster Hex bolt. I found that out the hard way last weekend when I tried to replace both T-belt & S-belt. I was only able to do the S-belt. The good news however when removing the serpentine belt, is that the tensioner arm that holds the ribbed tensioning pulley does not really require the 3299 VW special tool. I read in this forum that someone successfully used a 10" adjustable wrench instead. Since I didn't have one, I opted for a vice grip and inserted a 21mm. box wrench on the adjusting handle for leverage. That too worked fine! Following are some additional trivia on this repair for those inclined. 1. The 2 smooth surfaced idler pulleys that guide the S-belt are mechanically identical but they have different mounting depths and different part numbers. However, the pulley near the A/C compressor (P/N 037.145.276A) can be used to replace the one on top of the vibration damper by adding 2-3 flat washers to the mounting bolt so that the S-belt will run centered on the smooth surface. (Sometimes you're in dire need and your dealer will only have this one because it wears out faster from load due to its close proximity to the A/C compressor.) This is not an endorsement, I'm merely suggesting it as an option in case you wind up in a bind. NOTE: The idler on top of the vibration damper can ONLY be used at that location. 2. All the serpentine pulleys (both smooth & ribbed) have sealed bearings that supposedly have extremely long service lives, PROVIDED the grease inside does not dry up. I found out that the seals on these bearing can be removed using the thin blade of a Swiss Army knife and re-installed thereafter. The pulleys themselves have an additional dirt cover so even if you mess up the seal, it'll still be protected from dirt & grit by the pulley cover itself! After 120K miles, the grease in my original pulleys had indeed dried up. I've regreased them using molybdenium disulfide and from the way they look, I think they should work properly till 200K miles. Re: "S" switch on dash?
Jerry Carter
I use the "Sport" mode all the time. Having added a VDO vacuum gauge
in-line with the vacuum signal from the MAP sensor to the ECU, I have learned to drive by using RPM, vacuum, and speed as inputs. For example, when merging with traffic, I use the extra RPM (= little more HP) to get me in with traffic. For those times when I don't need to come up to speed as fast, I don't toggle the S switch - I ease off the throttle a bit to get the vacuum signal above 10" at 45 MPH for a split second and the transmission shifts to 4th gear. I gotten used to doing this and almost do it without looking at the gauge. I found using the gauge has helped me to get less variability in fuel economy, or about a better ~1/2 MPG on the average. Jerry PS If anyone is interested in a pic, email me and I'll send you one so you can see where I mounted it in the dash. I'm still trying to find a good looking pod that will hold 3 gauges so I can mount all of them on the top (and middle) of the dash. If anyone out there knows of one, please reply against this thread! --- In ev_update@..., kgervais@h... wrote: Just bought a 93 EV MV. transmission. In town with the "S" light on you should notice the upshift point is at higher rpm accelerating and the downshift is also at higher rpms. I may also suggest not flipping the switch during heavy throttle application as an abrupt possibly damaging shift may occur. John 93 EV MV auto ----- Original Message -----

EV heater fan resistor
Donald Gibbons
OK, did a archive search, a few posts on the problem but no real
information. If your main heater (the one in the dash) only works on the high speed then the resistor pack has failed. The dealer may ask for $30 or more for a new resistor pack but the thermo fuse itself is widely available and costs about $1. While it is possible that the resistors are burned out it is also possible that the thermo-fuse (AKA TCO, thermal cut off) has blown. This is easy to replace after you remove the glove box. 1. Disconnect the ground cable at the battery. Safety first! 2. Remove the glove box. 3. There is a 4 position connector just to the left of the blower fan motor. Under this connector is the resistor pack. Remove the connector. 4. Remove the single screw that fastens the pack to the blower housing and remove the pack. OK, if the resistor pack is all burnt up you will need a new one. But if all looks good but there is no continuity between terminals 1&4 then the thermo-fuse is blown. thermo-fuses are available from many electronic supply houses. Look on the side of the old thermo fuse for a temp rating. Mine was rated for 216c. Pretty hot! Radio shack lists only low temp units, Don't use anything with a lower rating. I recommend equal or higher, but not too much higher. Newark electronic carries them, price less then a dollar. The package will have instructions and may say not to solder but to crimp it on. Thats up to you, I bought two :) and had no problem soldering the first one. Cut the old thermo fuse off, clean the resistor leads and solder the new one in place. Just use good soldering practices (heat sinks) and tin the resistor leads first. |

fuel hoses
Ercole, Chris
Just got off the phone with VWofA and they said to bring my van to
Donaldson's to get the fuel hose campaign done. They told me the recall campaign has not been released yet to the dealers and that's why they don't know about it, but she would call ahead and inform them to do this under warranty. I'll probably make the appointment for next week or the week after and let you all know how it works out. Re: Good Shops Bad Shops
Randal Reed
The problem with rating anything as "good or bad" is that one
person's good might be someone else's bad. I found this out when I first started searching for a dealer to purchase from. I got a suggestion from a friend that Mountain States in Denver was "the best" dealer to go to. I had very much the opposite experience. I do think that if you started a list of dealers and had a "readers digest" version of people's experiences there, it would let the reader draw thier own conclusions. And it is probably a better way legally. Well, how's this - I just do it as a doc and anyone who wants to participate
can. I can email it out to anyone who wants it. I will be around here for the next 6 weeks or so and after that I should be email accessible at least once a week. Or I could turn it over to someone else then. I think it would work as an anecodtal thing. Example: Florida - Sarasota BugNutz 941-371-7663 April 2000 Steve has given the EVC ('97) a 60,000 mile tune-up and took care of installing tires, shocks, new lighter assembly, misc other little tweaks and tricks. He is just learning how to work on the EVC's, but has worked on VW's, including my Westy for years. He's busy, so sometimes it's difficult to get in, but he's very honest and reasonable to deal with. If you have an emergency I have no doubt that he'll work with you. soreal@... Florida - Sarasota Southpointe Motors, the local VW dealer does not work on Campers. I assume that they work on Eurovans, since they occasionally sell them. soreal@... Florida - Tampa Reeves Imports (813) 933-2811 June 1999 Excellent. Work on the Winnebago parts, too. soreal@... Colorado - Fort Collins Ed Carroll June 1998 I have no idea what kind of work they do if you can actually get in, but they were the most unaccomodating VW dealer that I've ever encountered. They totally blew me off when I tried to get the EVC in for an oil change, even when I gave them a 5 day window. They knew that I was just passing through, too. Go to The Tire Shoppe instead. soreal@... And if anyone has a better idea, I'm not attached to this format. Send contributions/questions/comments to me at mechanics@... Joan |
Re: LP gas alarm-beep-beep-beep

both were okay. I ended up removing the LP detector fuse in the rear fuse panel just to get the detector to be quiet. I called the manufacturer of the detector and they said the detector needs to be replaced. CCI (the manufacturer) says that model has a useful ideal life of 7 years. I won't know how old the detector is until I pull it out to replace it as the date of manufacture is on the back of the unit. It has to be at least 5 years old though. I ordered a replacement Model #7770 (since Model #7730 is no longer made). Windish RV in Denver says they should have the unit by tomorrow and it will be about $45. hopefully when I get the new unit installed my beep beep problems will be solved.
