BBC HLS streams on VR Stream and other players 7
Hi, to a very quiet list. I have thought for a long time it should be possible to play BBC HLS streams on various specailist players since the demise of the Shoutcast streams. Well, it turns out I was right. Curtacy of a post to the TAVIP list from David Griffiths, I did a search for the Radio Manchester HLS stream. I searched for BBC radio hls streams on get-hub this search turned up all the BBC national and local radio streams. I then modified a playlist as provided by Pele West some time back. (I am no tech guru, and much less a programmer!) I am going to paste in the text of the trial playlist I created at the end of this message. With reference to the VR Stream, this text should be saved to the route of an SD card to be inserted into the Stream, but you should be able to see the SD card in the VR3 player by connecting it to your computer. Having copied the file below to the SD card, making sure the Stream is online, go to the internet radio function of the Stream with presses of key 1 Press the number 7 menu key and you should be able to arrow to the import playlist option. Press hash, bottom righ key of the numberic keys, and all playlists should be imported, including the below list which you will have given a name of your choice, but ending in .pls This is the experimental list I imported to the Stream. Much of what is here might not be necessary, but the template I used looks much like a programmer's code script. [playlist] NumberOfEntries=2 File1=http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/uk/sbr_med/ak/bbc_radio_manchester.m3u8 Title1=RadioManchester length1=-1 File2=https://timesradio.wireless.radio/stream Title2=Times Radio Length2=-1 Version=1 These streams are live at the moment but for how long, who knows? these may well be the streams the BBC Sounds app uses so, if they are, then fair to assume they should be around for some time. Obviously those who prefer s=wiping and tapping and searching in the Sounds app can carry on doing that, but it does look like the links found at Get-Hub should form the basis of playlists for the Stream and other newer players. Not sure if I really have the time or appropriate skill to create full playlists, but for anyone wjp does, then that would be very welcome. In fact I do hope Humanware come up with playlists - including BBC local radio - even though local radio is now to become a ghost of its former self. Ray.

Update on Audible and HW Companion 5
Hello everyone, Two updates today. 1- Audible Last we heard in August, Audible was going to provide an update on September 12th. And they delivered! They told us that the work is well in process, they have prototypes and it's going really well on their end, but they still have some bugs to fix. They plan on delivering us (at HumanWare) a beta version of AudibleSync so we can start development and testing on our end. This means that, if all goes well (and at this point, I'm cautiously optimistic), it will be in the 1.3 release for Q1 2024. Yay! 2- HW Companion We finally released the new version of the HW Companion with MTP compatibility for the Stream 3. It also also now has the VRTrek listed as a supported device (it always worked with the VRTRek, but you had to choose the Stream 2). The Stream 3 is the "Stream 603" version. It can be found on https://support.humanware.com/en-canada/support/humanware_companion (and a link to that page will be added to the Stream 3 page later today). Thank you all! Mathieu

Important BBC Update SensePlayer 3
I apologise if this is old news as I don't follow threads religiously but I think this update may be important for some people. This morning after updating the channel database on my SensePlayer I found that the BBC Streams in the main Web Radio app are working again. This applies not only to the national radio streams but it appears local radio streams as well. It seems as if you are spoilt for choice as when I typed BBC into the search I got over 100 results. Not absolutely every single one of these worked, the ones based on TV like Parliament may not work, but I suggest adding many, and then deleting the ones you do not want. For example, There are multiple copies of Five Live and Five Sports Extra and they all seem to work so I will simply delete the surplus channels. Anyway as of now I have working streams for BBC Radio London BBC Radio Essex BBC Radio Devon BBC Radio 2 ~BBC Radio 3 BBC Radio 4 BBC Radio 4 LW BBC Radio 4Extra BBC Radio Five Live BBC Radio Five Sports Extra BBC Radio 6. The only caveat is that I have only played each stations for a few minutes to establish that they work - so I cannot confirm if they persistently stream, or sporadically cut out as they apparently do on the Stream 3. FW: spam messages a warning!
Hi This is going to all the groups I run or the ones I am a member of. I have received an email such as the text from this one which fooled me, it seemed so genuine, it starts like this: Can i ask a quick favour from you? I responded to it, it seemed so genuine but read on Thanks for your quick response, it's my friend's birthday and I need to get her an Apple Gift Card for her as a birthday gift, but I am having problems purchasing online and I'm traveling right now. TTS now Available on SensePlayer Dolphin Easy Reader 6
This is a copy of an email sent to another list but I think relevant here. Last night I discovered that eSpeak was now available on the SensePlayer app catalogue. I installed this in the hope that this would add some TTS functionality in Dolphin Easy Reader. More importantly for me the installation of eSpeak seemed to unlock something in the Audio Settings of Easy Reader and I was suddenly, for the first time, able to download and install Nuance Voices from within the Easy Reader app itself. Previously this add voices option in audio settings was greyed out for me and not available on the SensePlayer. The Easy Reader app cannot access SensePlayer inbuilt TTS to play content. I cannot pretend the process was smooth but eventually in dolphin Easy Reader Settings I was able then to change the voice from an incomprehensible Foreign eSpeak variant to Vocaliser Tom. There seem to be dozens of eSpeak variants but cursoring through the list of available voices eventually revealed Tom. I am glad to say that I was able to then read as normal yesterday's Independent newspaper from the RNIB eText service using Tom with perfect comprehension. Prior to this pressing the play button only revealed silence. I then switched to a book downloaded from Project Gutenberg in the app, and I am glad to report that this, also, was read by the newly installed Tom TTS voice. I think this is a major development, allowing RNIB eText Newsagent and Online Project Gutenberg access to a Daisy Player for the first time. It may be that there has been some background update to the Dolphin TTS servers and installing eSpeak was not necessary but for whatever reason I can now access TTS voices to read newspaper and eBook contents from within Dolphin easy Reader on the SensePlayer. Kingston 256 gb sd card not recognised in my mp3 players 12
Hi I recently purchased a 256 gb Kingston sd card from Amazon, for some reason, neither my milestone 312 ace or vr stream 3 recognise the card, has anyone had any problems with Kingston cards before, I have used loads of 32 gb sd cards from Kingston but not one this capacity. The milestone sees it there but doesn't access it, what I mean , can swap to it but that is as far as it goes and my vr stream, it just refreshes book shelves for ever, very odd. What I thought was a bargain isn't unfortunately. Regards Adrien Henry From: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> On Behalf Of Mathieu via groups.io Sent: Monday, July 24, 2023 3:30 PM To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Subject: [dap-uk] An update on Audible on the Victor Reader Stream 3. Hello everyone, I wanted to give you an update on the latest about what’s going on with the Audible integration on the Victor Reader Stream 3. I’m going to pull the curtain back a little and let you in on the inner workings of such an endeavor. For context: we initially contacted them in July 2021 (two years ago) to let them know we had a new product coming and to prepare. We contacted them again in July 2022. We were told to just use the previous implementation (the one we have on Stream2/VRTrek). In November 2022, it became clear that the fact we’re now using MTP wouldn’t work in AudibleSync, so we reinitiated contact, let them know, and sent them a device at their request for testing. This is all before anyone knew the Stream 3 was coming out. As I’ve mentioned on some podcasts and here before, it was then radio silence for a couple months. I would email them once or twice a week and get not answers, in December and January. That is, until Jonathan Mosen in late January initiated a very successful open letter/petition that caught their attention, then they started communicating back with us. Since then, we’ve had some meetings, in theory bi-weekly, but a few ended up being cancelled with little to no notice. We were told in February we would be sent a test account, it took about two months to receive it (April). We then we kept being told, from meeting to meeting, that “it’s going to work in the next few weeks”. Finally, around mid-June, we finally were contacted by one of their engineers who started looking at the issue. From the questions they asked, it seemed clear that this was the first time they even plugged in the Stream 3 to a computer. I’m going to open a parenthesis here. Now, what you need to understand is, there is about a month’s worth (4-5 weeks) for one person of work to do on our side to create the interface on the Stream. We need to build an app, build the user interface, etc. We’re a small company, and we cannot afford to put that much work into something that ends up not working because AudibleSync won’t support MTP, so we are waiting until we have confirmation that the Stream is seen before we start the work. That means that in order to make the 1.2 update, we’d have to get the AudibleSync thing sorted out before end of July, then start the work which brings us to early September, when we can then do QA and beta testing. End of parenthesis. Two weeks ago, we had a call with some higher ups at Audible that told us that we would get an update by July 21st, which was last Friday. As we had not heard anything this morning, we asked for it. They responded quickly, and the update is: we’ll give you an update by July 31st as we’re evaluating whether or not we can do MTP. So, basically, same as two weeks ago. We at Humanware are really disappointed in this turn of event. The fact that we’ve given them a heads up two years ago, provided them with a test unit over 8 months ago, and to be quite blunt, not much has been done since at all... I’m the kind of person that calls it like it is. When we mess up at Humanware, and we do sometimes, I don’t shy from it, I voice it. Doesn’t always make me popular, but I tell it like I see it, and I’ve eve

Kingston 256 gb sd card not recognized in my mp3 players
Hi David I don't know what the capacity or maximum size sd card the milestone 312 ace can support, but I have it playing a 128 no problem. It is the new version of the milestone so you would think the hardware is newer. Incidentally, the one I drouned when I was in hospital has started working again, I haven't tried sd card in it but everything else seems ok. I thought the tea had destroyed it so got a new one to replace it. I will try and format the sd card, will leave it until tomorrow, but I like the new stream but there is room for improvement of course. I wait 100 minutes with the 256 gb sd card refreshing but no go. Regards Adrien

We answered them in a very timely manner every time they asked us a question, provided them with all that we could, attended every single meeting with them, etc. We really did everything we could humanly do. As it stands, it seems very unlikely we’ll see Audible support in 2023. Mid-2024 would be my bet. And that’s if they don’t decide that MTP is too complex to add. We are looking at a plan B right now if that’s what they decide, to see if there’s something we can do… we think there may be a way, but without going into details, it’s a bit ugly and we’re really hesitant. It would also require a lot of work. So there you have it. I’ve always been transparent with you all, and my goal here really isn’t to throw Audible under the bus or anything, but j

brief review of the Communiplayer and Accord devices from RNIB
Passing this on with Tim Pennick's permision. This review appeared on the TN Talk email list.Players like these are certainly cheaper than the three specailist DAISY players so are of great interest to the talking newspaper community who are not concerned with the DAISY format, more with playing ,.mp3 files in a playlist - and skipping between folders as some TNs do provide extra material in additional folders. Ray. Hi All, Here?s a brief review of the Communiplayer and Accord devices from the point of view of a totally blind user. I now have on loan, a demo unit of each of these players which have now returned to the RNIB catalogue. Here are my initial findings: Accord RNIB Shop: https://shop.rnib.org.uk/rnib-accord-usb-player-94220 This is the first time I?ve got my hands on one of these devices. There are to my mind some strange design decisions. Firstly, the device is surprisingly heavy. It is billed as being slightly bigger than a coffee cup. It?s actually shaped surprisingly like a small barrel, and has a short lanyard attached to it. I initially wondered why the lanyard was necessary, but I have to admit that when I picked up the device, the lanyard naturally fits over the hand in which you are holding it and gives extra security against dropping it. On the top are some of the controls and sockets surrounded in a rubber enclosure which I guess is intended to make the controls and sockets easier to find. I was confused by the really fiddly small rubber cover/plugs which come inserted into the USB, headphone and charging sockets. These seem to be totally unnecessary, and the user information suggests their immediate removal and discarding. On extracting the unit from its box, I was further confused as to which way up it should stand. The enclosure containing the controls and sockets could be (and in my case was) interpreted as being some sort of stand. A further cause for confusion: I had read the manual in advance, and was expecting Plus and Minus buttons. However, I spent a surprising amount of time examining what I took to be a 4-way joy-stick thing on the front, with another vertical control bar underneath. This is probably more obvious to someone with some sight, but these are actually the advertised Plus and Minus buttons. Another unusual feature of the device is the circular charging pad on which the Accord unit can stand. This is the first example of a wireless charging system I?ve come across. There is no physical electric connection, and charging presumably happens by induction. I?ve had the device charging for about 20 minutes and the bottom of the Accord unit has become surprisingly hot, leaving me to wonder if the charging pad would actually warm up a small iron saucepan. RNIB recommendation is that the device should not be left standing on the pad for extended periods, as to paraphrase, this will cook the battery. When it comes to actually controlling the device, I have to say that I don?t like the controls. My main gripe is the operation of the volume control. This is one of the features of the Plus and Minus buttons discussed above. These buttons double up as the skip track forward and backwards functions. Due to the fact that the buttons execute different functions depending on how long you hold them down for, speech prompts have been included to tell you what you have just done. E.g. a quick tap of the Plus skips forward a track. I really don?t like this multiple use of a single control dependent on the amount of time it?s held down for. To my mind, it leads to issues for anyone with even minor cognitive or dexterity issues, and in any case, has the added disadvantage in this case that the speech prompts are not governed by the current volume at which the device is playing. Turning the volume down, therefore results in an unnecessarily loud repeated announcement of Volume Down. A strange glitch also means that you hear a small snatch of the content you?re playing at the same volume as the speech prompt, and can?t get an idea of the new volume until you release the control. This is extremely clunky

Mystic Access tutorials for the Stream 3 - Date announcement and webinar!
Hi everyone! Great news: the Mystic Access tutorial for the Stream 3 will be made available to everyone on Thursday, August 10th during the day. It will be available through Mystic Access's website (https://mysticaccess.com/) as well as on our support page for the Stream 3 (https://support.humanware.com/), for free to anyone who's interested in learning about the Stream (no purchase necessary!). I've listened to it, and clocking at a bit over 12.5 hours, to say it's comprehensive would be an understatement. It's a job really well done by Mystic Access, like always. To celebrate this, we'll be hosting a one hour webinar on Thursday, August 10th, at 8pm Eastern. On the webinar will be Kim and Chris from Mystic Access as well as, well, me! We'll talk about the tutorial, then we'll open up the floor for questions from you. To register: https://humanware.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_i_zl0Hc6R56AV4LMMVUVew If you can't attend it (we understand it's a tad late in the UK!), don't worry, we'll upload it on Youtube soon after. Straitus Wi-Fi module 12
Don't know how many here have a Humanware Stratus player or have even heard of it. Its a bit long in the tooth now, but it plays CDs pen drives and SD card - both audio and some text files. I always knew there was supposed to be the optionof a plug-in Wi_fi module inside the small detatchable door on the bottom of the player, but I do not think it was ever available here. Well, the Talking Tech podcast from Australia featuring David Woodbridge revealed the other day that in Australia at least this module seems to have been made available. So, why not here, apparantly? He spoke of it being able to access the Australian talking book library,. It would be nice if that could happen here, though I've always felt the RNIB TB library to be a bit of a mess. I like the Stratus players, as dated as they may be. They sound nice and there larger size would appeal to many older listeners much more than the pocketable portable players most of us use. So, anyone know anything more on this? Ray.

sd cards
Hi I don’t often go on amazon warehouse but had a good look on there on Monday night, I found a Kingston 256 gb sd card for ?12, they had some sandisk ones for ?20 or just over, knowing the stream 3 can take large cards, I thought I’d pass this on. There were 5 of the Kingston cards, 4 now as I have got one, and I did see a 500 gb sd card for ?30. On amazon warehouse, some things are returns, I have brought a few things from there, a Logitech k380 for ?25, again a return, but nothing wrong with the stuff. Regards Adrien

BBC radio streams - after Shoutcast' demise 2
Glad to report that, for me, BBC radio feeds are still available outside of BBC Sounds app. Best for getting the HLS streams (presume they are the HLS Streams) is the Synapptic phone/tablet software which seems to get the sixty or more streams available. the favourites links though have to be updated, but access via the Synapptic voice command works well. Google Nest is getting them too as one might expect. the latest update to the Blind Shell Classic 2 has now got some updated feeds, but these are all national ones, except BBC Radio London. I do not think the Scotland and Northern Ireland feeds are available on the BS2 as yet. the Humanware VR3 is getting the old Humanware UK playlist via - it would seem - an Amazon link, although I find there are interuptions with these feeds which I do not get on other players using my Wi-Fi. A list of HLS streams was provided recently on the TAVIP list: but this appears to list BBC TV streams: https://gist.github.com/random-robbie/e56919b5603ecc87af885391e7331657 Have I got this wrong somewhere? the Humanware VR2 will not handle the HLS streams. Either its modem or whatever will not handle the bandwidth or else it simply does not support this format. As I have said before my oldish Roberts internet radio still gets the BBC streams but this is not accessible in the sense of having voice feedback. So, a mixed picture but let us hope things will get better in due course. (I note VLC player will handle these new streams and you can record the streams within VLC though you end up with large files of course.) Ray.
