To be honest, I don't think the Zenstone is what people want. It doesn't have speakers for example, and the buttons are not big enough for the elderly and less dexterous of us.

I have an old zenstone mp3 player, they are very easy to use, I wonder if something like that could be adapted for the older population, just convert it to take a micro sd card or something. When the zenstone came out they were selling on play.com which is obviously no longer running for around ?14. Just a thought.

It wouldn't be too difficult to manufacture a player similar to those of Kings Access in terms of actually doing it, but it's the return we would get on it that may be the problem.

This is a vexed question indeed, re. the price of players.


Some TNs might afford ?70 to ?80 but certainly not all.


Mnowing listeners and our community as I do I know not many would be prepared to chip in a part of that cost. That could lead us down the road of talking about preparedeness to pay for such things which, in the end, would lead us nowhere.


I still tend to think that if only Wireless for Blind, RNIB, TNF and possibly others would agree to co-operate then a higher volume order for manufacture could be placed. Still, the design stage alone is the first possible flaw in that suggestion, and we could end up with a player that does not satisfy many and end up with something like the committee set up to design a horse which came up with the Camel!


In this age of individualism and everyone doing their own thing I wonder we end up with much of anything that could sensibly meet the needs of the mass of listeners.

Was going to append this question to my last post, but realised it needs a separate thread.


Many will know the Kings audio Sovriegn players are no longer
availableand a replacement is being saught urgently by many talking
newspapers. Anyone know of an easy to use tactile player that might
be substituted for the Sovreign?


The RNIB offering who's name I cannot recall has been found wanting
but maybe due an upgrade to meet the needs of TNs.


I have been involved in local TN production for more than 20 years so
know the problem well. So many of the readers are of pension age and
often much older and resistant to anything needing some learning to
get used to.


I often wish a player produced in large numbers to meet basic needs
could be designed and procured by a consortium of information
providers to the vI and blindness market but that's unlikley to
happen. Much better would be a player that could access online
services via Wi-Fi or mobile data, but alas, this is unlikely to see the light of day!
