Hi Adrian, Yes, I am familiar with how these little Bluetooth transmitters work and I did have one a long time ago which I gave away.

It would be good to get one that can be transmit while it is being
charged. I think some of them do not work while they are being charged.

Hello List,

Is anyone using a Bluetooth transmitter with the VR Stream or other device without Bluetooth? I ask as I am so pained and generally peed off with BBC local radio stream being denied to us while the olympics is still on. I can get some of the local radio streams on an internet radio in my kitchen but I would like to be able to get that radio/s output fed into a Bluetooth transmitter so I can listen on my Bose Mini Soundlink in other rooms, hence my question.

A model of Bluetooth transmitter and where you got it would be much appreciated.

I only hope the forthcoming replacement for the Trek will enable us to
play the high quality BBC local radio stream which are bypassing the
olympics blocking of lower quality local radio stream compatible with
the VR Stream and Trek so I can have my local radio back again!

Re: Bluetooth transmitters?

Hi Ray

The one I have you can plug it in to charge it, I keep it plugged in all the time, it cann connect to my stream for example, I think there is a second 3.5 mm jack socket, but it isn't available now.

I have put a link below, that looks ok, I don't know what you want to spend, I don't go below 4 out of 5, you only get what you pay for.

Hi Ray

Thanks for the link to the streams.

Re: Olympic coverage messing up local radio Big Time in UK on VRS

Pele and All, I found the information about high quality BBC stream links at:

This page is in factr quite old so things may be different in some respects now.? You will note the writer gives links to national BBC streams and comments they very likely will not be accessible outside the Uk, which I imagine is true unless, maybe, you are using a good VPN.

I am not surprised the Stream or Trek isn't playing these streams, but at least you get an error message whereas I think all I would have got is either a long waite and plenty of "please waite" messages, or it would have said nothing.? I fear that my Trek, even though it has been away for repair for the usual dislodged USB connection, , is basically faulty but I am putting up with it until something better , hopefully, comes along.

I played the BBC stream which I linked to in VLC which will play just about anything, but getting the stream to pause or stop was difficult, and only a right click with the mouse and going down to Pause or stop, would do it.? Not the place I know to discuss VLC but the likes of Brian Hargen have JFW scripts to work with it.

We really do need a better accessible radio and podcast player now!

Olympic coverage messing up local radio Big Time in UK on VRS

It is not just me but others on various lists have commented how BBC local radio coverage here in the UK has been obliterated by rights issues blocking BBC coverage on many of its local radio streams, particularly the 128 bit MP3 streams which our playlists use.

Early on Monday morning I made myself a cup of tea and turned to my Roberts internet Radio to see if that was similarly effected.and, to my surprise, the five presets were carrying local radio output, four of them relaying Five Live coverage, the forth, CWR, was interestingly carrying Radio One!? This proves at least that the high quality streams it must be using are those which I believe the Amazon A device uses.? The question now for me is, Will the VRS handle these high quality streams?? I have not tried as yet but fear it might not handle them.

Has anyone actually tried using these on a VR Trek?? A bit of a faff to transfer the link to an SD card, but I might try it.

Here is one for Radio Manchester:

(You simply use other radio station names in place of "radio_manchester" given in this example to play other BBC local radio streams.)? Only downside might be that you have a longer time delay with these streams than the 128 bit streams.? This will not get around blocking of football coverage on Saturday afternoons and in the evenings when the football season starts again.

So, any comments and experiences on other internet radio devices?? I do hope the replacement for the Trek improves on handling of radio streams.

Subject: [vrstreamuk] Exporting network configuraiton to file on VR Trek?

Feel I should know the answer to this but I am surprised I cannot find an option in the first set of settings in the VR Trek to export network settings to the SD card in the Trek. There is an import option which I have used before now, but I cannot remember how I would have created a Wi-Fi network connection settings file from an SD card to start with. So what am I missing or mis-remembering?

All this brought about by my having to bow now to sending my Trek to Humanware for repair. I've exported all podcasts as well as the podcast feeds and also my radio playlists but the network configuration settings are the one thing I cannot see how to save at the moment.

All this brought about by my Trek finally surcoming to the faulty USB power connection of which I may say more later.

Any help much appreciated.

Re: Separate Radio Stream Files

Thanks very much Pele for an amazingly quick conversion of the commercial radio playlists into separate, I presume, m3u files, though I have not taken a look yet.

I hope David Griffiths will comment on the Evo 10 or 11 or whatever it is and its internet radio capabilities.? I don't know if the EVo players might be due an upgrade but I hope someone will tell us if and when this happens, although I have just remembered we are on the VR Stream list here.

I know the Stream/Trek Humanware players are due for an upgrade some time in the not too distant future so I hope we get to hear about it here when it happens.? I am sure the other competitor from the strangely named Bones company who's name I cannot recall, is also due an update to enable it to play radio streams.? I for one will be looking out for news of these.

Thank you for this detailed message Pele. I'll certainly have a good try at connecting my 2nd generation stream to our WIFI network at some point in the next few days using the detailed instructions you've provided in the below message, and let the list know if I'm successful.

Subject: [vrstreamuk] Connecting VR Stream to Wi-Fi

Hi Everyone

I sent this message yesterday, but it did not get through. So, here we go
again.

Connecting the VR Stream to Wi-Fi

This is how it works for me. Apologies if I tell people things they already
know.

1. Turn on your Victor Reader Stream.

2. Press the round button in the middle at the top. This switches between
offline and online mode. If you are in Online Mode, it should say "Podcasts",
or "References", or "Internet Radio".

3. If it says "Airplane Mode On" Press the button again for about 2 seconds. It
should say "Airplane Mode Off".

4. Press 7 to access the menu. It should say "Menu, Wireless, Airplane Mode
Off".

5. Press 8 twice. It should say "Scan for Available Connections".

6. Press Hash (the key to the right of 0). It should find the networks near
where you are. At the moment I can see 2, one is ours and the other belongs
to next door (I suppose).

7. Before saying the first name it says "SSID" and the name of the network. It
then spells it out and says the signal strength.

8. Use 2 or 8 to find your network and press Hash.

9. It should say "Enter Password". Type in your password followed by Hash. If
you have uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers in your password,
use the Bookmark key (above the 3) to change case.

10. It should say "Enter a nickname for this network". I usually type in
"Home", but you can call it what you like. Type in the nickname followed by
Hash. It should say "Connected to" and the nickname you have just given it.

11. If all goes well, you should be connected to your wi-fi network.
Press Star (the key to the left of 0) to leave the menu.

I hope this works for you. Please bear in mind I am not an expert in this field.
Following these instructions has just worked for me, and I don't know what
happens if they don't connect.

One thing to consider is that routers have 2 channels, 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz. The
stream will only work on the 2.4 Ghz channel. Some routers do not have this
channel, so it won't connect.

Good luck

Pele

Re: Connecting VR Stream to Wi-Fi

Echo Henry's thanks to Pele for sending these instructions getting your Trek/Stream connected to Wi-Fi.? It strikes me that many are simply not liberating the freedom these devices give in listening to radio and downloading podcasts, as imperfect as the HW devices are in some respects.? These players would be even poorer value for money if you do not set up the Wi-Fi connection.

Those instructions are pretty well what I would have attempted to say but would enthasise the role of the extreme upper right button in cycling between lower, upper case and numbers to enter text.

A final two comments.? Yet another anoyance of Humanware players as they stand is no support for 5Ghz Wi-Fi which surely has to change in the forthcoming replacement.? Second, I often find on the Stream or the Trek I get error messages when searching for podcasts or radio stations which, while I don't know precisely what they mean, turns out to be cured temporarily on the Trek by taking the Trek off-line in the connections option in the menu Pele has mentioned, then turning back on again after 20 seconds or more.

Still, enough for now, and I must get on finishing this week's local TN which I produce.

Re: Unable to play the station

Hi Adrian and Everyone

I don't have an EVo 10, but I believe it works slightly differently. Each radio station has a separate file which you copy to your device.

If you give me a little time I can send you a list of files.

If you want to do it yourself, the playlist I sent is only a text file and can be opened in Notepad, or any other text editor.

Please bear in mind that this list I created was originally intended for Ray, as he asked for various stations to be included.

Re: Unable to play the station

Hi Pele

Good to hear from you. I too have grabbed the playlist, how would I split it up, I use an evo 10 audio player, it too has internet radio and you have to put the playlists in for each station. Is there a way to get all the playlists and It¡¯s a shame there is no easy way to import files to the stream via wifi, it would make it easier for us.

One thought would be for our streams to connect to our humanware accounts, yes we have accounts for when we purchase from humanware, our favourites, wifi keys, other log-in files could be backed up on there, our podcast feeds etc, it would be easier. We could upload to the accounts and then the stream would fetch in any new files. Just a thought.

Re: Unable to play the station

Hi Ray

Yes it is nice when you know that somebody has read your message, sometimes it is disappointing especially when you know people are out there.

Just to clarify, I use bluetooth keyboards with my phone and tablets, I can do some things on the touch screen but it depends on what it is and how tricky it is and how big the screen is.

I have the streams here, two of the original model and two of the new model, I haven't used my original ones for years. I am just checking on my stream to see if I can receive Bolton Fm and I can't, for some reason it says unable to start the station. You need to report this to ootunes, there must be a fix for this. You can understand it with foreign stations but not UK ones. Good luck.

Hi Adrian and nice someone's read my message!

I do have a smart phone but not up to speed using it at all, but that's another story. The reason I and so many use the Trek and Stream is buttons and the Humanware interface which we find so much easier to use. I do accept that a smart phone would most likely handle the streams I cannot hear on the trek but it would be nice to hear if anyone can hear Bolton FM on their smart phone just to confirm its the Trek that is the problem here.

I have thought more than once Humanware would do well to sell a keyboard to work with smart phones to take advantage of up-to-date operating systems though I don't think HW is listening.

Knowing that you have problems with hand co-ordination Adrian I am rather surprised you manage touch screen phones.Little surprising then that it was yourself who set up this list as I recall and its good you did.

Subject: [vrstreamuk] Unable to play the station

I am trying to listen to Bolton FM - the home of the Bolton Family - on my Trek. OOTune finds it but no go trying to play the station. I might add I get the same result trying to play Black country Radio. Both of these are UK community stations.

So, would someone else try and see if they can play Boltonb FM/ I cannot help but express my frustration about the Trek which increasingly refuses to play staitons first time or not at all, Mushroom being another case in the UK playlist. I am sure I will not be alone in looking at other internet radios as the Trek seem to be getting to be a load of pants as an internet radio.
