Re: [Tech-VI] For Users of the Victor Reader Stream 3: Version 1.3 is now available!

开云体育

I installed the update yesterday which took a fair time and I was struck by the lack of announcements of the download progress though I was told of installation progress.

I see from the announcement that the latest version of AudibleSync should be downloaded to enable Audible book support.? Wonder if anyone can point me to a source telling me how to enable and use Audible on the VR Stream 3?? I might now be interested in buying some Audible titles.

What a pity we cannot access RNIB Talking Books on the VR3 - or any other specailist player for that matter.? Not much inclined to go the Dolphin Easy Reader route which I think is the only option open to us for listening on phones and the like.? Of course I could do this on my PC and a reminder of the URL for the RNIB download service would be nice to have if anyone would provide it.? The link I have seems to refer to books to order rather than to download.

How depressing it is that so many countries seem to support the download of audio books from their national libraries - but not the UK.? Just one more reason I feel I am living in a NAF country.

Ray.

FW: Version 1.3 for the Stream 3 is now available!

开云体育

?

Version 1.3 for the Stream 3 is now available!

We’re excited to introduce the latest software updates for the Victor Reader Stream, bringing you new features and exciting functional updates.

Audible? Absolutely!

We are very happy to announce the availability of Audible on the Stream 3! Thanks to a collaborative effort with the great people at Amazon, you can now read Audible books on your Stream 3.

Furthermore, device activation is now stored in the internal memory of the player instead of the SD card, so you no longer need to activate every SD card. If you already have Audible books on an SD card, simply activating your player will allow you to read them. Note that books for Audible can now be downloaded to internal memory, but can still be moved to the SD card by pressing the “3” key.

Note that you will need to update your AudibleSync software to version 1.8.16 or above so it can see the Stream.

Exciting features added!

You asked - we delivered! We’ve made several notable changes that we think you’ll appreciate.

Alphabetical order on bookshelves

Your books will now be organized alphabetically on all the bookshelves – so no more scrambling around to find a particular title in your collection!

Faster SD card load

We’ve implemented some optimizations in the indexation of the SD card that now makes it much faster to load. The bigger the card, the more significant the improvement. Try it out!

Suspend mode

Enable this option in the General Settings to turn the Power button into a Suspend button. Suspending the device will result in less battery usage than when turned on, and it can be woken up much faster. If you want to shut down completely, an option is available at the end of the settings menu when Suspend mode is enabled.

Audio decoder update

We’ve updated the audio decoder in the Stream. This means that a few stations that didn’t work with the previous version will now work, especially in the TuneIn bookshelf.

Acapela voice update and new voices

We’ve updated the TTS voices to the latest version of Acapela. This allows us to offer additional voices, and the quality of the existing voices has been enhanced.

IMPORTANT: If you have already downloaded different voices, you will be reverted to the default voices and will have to download them again. Try them out!

Let us know what you think!

just a tip

Hi

I have been trying to find a case which fits the new vr stream mark 3, unless I want to spend $150 to get a case from the states for the new stream, I have been looking around. I have found that the original mark 1 stream canvas case fits the new stream, ok you can't get to all the controls but for me it gives the stream a bit of protection. I have attached a lanyard to the case so I am able to hang it around my neck. I am looking around for a more suitable case but this is a good alternative for now. I can't afford to keep dropping my streams. Unfortunately I sold my stream mark 1 leather cases when I got rid of my original streams so if anyone has a leather case for stream mark 1, perhaps you could let me know.

Incidentally, down here in Devon there are a lot of artisan leather craft makers, I am contacting one or two to see if they would make me a leather case for my stream, who knows, somebody may be interested in helping me with it. If I hear anything, I will pass it on.

Regards

Adrien

I am raising funds to buy my own wheelchair, I have to do this because of changes to NHS services local to me. If you can help me by donating or spreading the word, please feel free. Many thanks.

Re: Map update available for VR Trek

Thanks for that Steve, though not been to the link yet.

Not sure if it matters whether one goes to the HW UK site or you land on Humanware.com but I asked only because I so often find myself driven round in circles trying to find such things.? Come to think of it I guess the map download is just one file and, of course, you select the map you want when installing.? But thanks again.

Ray.

I shall get around to updating my maps as I have found the VR Trek navigation facility quite useful, although if someone could point me to a link to download these on my PC I'be glad to have it as downloading via the Trek with its snailish download speeds is no joke!

[Living Blindfully Announcement] Three extra Living Blindfully episodes covering the Zoom H Essential series of handy recorders

开云体育

For those who might be interested Jonathan Mosen is making these excellent descriptions of the new Zoom recorders available in the Living Blindfully podcast feed.? (These were originally published in his Blind Podmaker podcasts.)

Ray.

At 6 AM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday New Zealand time, we’ll be publishing three Living Blindfully Extras going in-depth into each of the Zoom Essential series.

On Thursday, episode 272 contains a review of the most capable member of the series, the Zoom H6Essential.

ON Friday, we look in episode 273 at its smaller sibling, the Zoom H4Essential, with a few more details that will be of interest to current or potential H6Essential users as well.

Finally on Saturday, episode 274 discusses the baby of the family, the Zoom H1Essential. While it’s part of the same series, the H1Essential is quite a different recorder in many respects.

All reviews are indexed by chapter, making it easy for you to get to the section you want. This is handy when you’re learning about a recorder with it in front of you.

These episodes will be released to everyone at the same time, so those who are currently not financial supporters of our work can listen to them at the same time as Living Blindfully Plus subscribers. We’ll also publish transcripts of all three episodes, making this a handy reference guide if you are searching for something quickly.

I hope you find these interesting and helpful. Thanks for listening to Living Blindfully.

Hi everyone,

I've seen quite a few messages recently on this topic.

I'm sorry I haven't been posting much recently, but it has been quite busy at work, I've been traveling a bit. But rest assured I keep monitoring messages here :)

So yes, at the end of 2023, we discontinued the VRTrek.

Some of the core components to make the VRTrek were no longer available, and we couldn't keep producing it.

A non-negligeable amount of people were buying the VRTrek either only for the Victor (book reading part) because it had more memory and Bluetooth. Some people also bought it only for the GPS portion of it and didn't use the Victor part of it.

As such, with the release of the Stream 3 (which fulfilled the more memory and Bluetooth part) and the StellarTrek, sales in the VRTrek declined quite a bit. It wasn't viable for now to consider making a newer version of it.

I understand that yes, the StellarTrek is a bit pricier than the VRTrek was. However, it is also much more advanced. The GPS precision on it is much better, and it can do a multitude of AI-assisted things: OCR, address recognition, barcode scanning, color recognition, and soon, pedestrian crossing detection (coming in March), with many more features coming down the road.

I understand this doesn't make everyone happy, but we also get great feedback about the Stellar's enhanced capabilities and people who are happy to see a dedicated device back in HumanWare's product lineup.

I want to end this by thanking you all for the feedback. The interest and the passion shown by our community is truly something I cherish.

Re: books not saving their place

Hi Matthew

?

Thanks for this, I understand that you have your work cut out making sure that everything is working properly, if you had stayed with the old design of mark 2 stream, just modified it in some way, you would have probably had problems still. The fact that you have completely made a new stream, it will just take time to get it right, regardless of how frustrating it is for us. Anyway, I hope you can sort out the issues with the books as it is very frustrating losing our place and book marks not working. Keep up the good work anyway. Thanks Rome wasn’t built in a day as they say!

I am raising funds to buy my own wheelchair, I have to do this because of changes to NHS services local to me. If you can help me by donating or spreading the word, please feel free. Many thanks.

Hi Adrien,

?

We are trying to address these issues where places aren’t being kept properly in the books. It’s a bit complex, as there are lots of moving parts, but I think we’ll see improvements in 1.3.

Hi Matthew

?

Can you tell me what is being done to correct the issues in the $otherbooks bookshelf. When I read a book, the stream doesn’t save its place when the stream 3 shuts down, I often have to try and find my place in the book. Also, when I use the time jump functions, if I jump back 30 minutes, it seems to be much further than 30 minutes, if I am 2 or 3 hours into a book, press jump back 30 minutes, it only takes 2 presses to go back to the beginning of a book. I have tried using a book mark to save my place but the stream doesn’t save the book marks . This is very frustrating, I frequently lose my place for one reason or another and have to back track. ???

Adrien

Re: Regain navigation capability in MP3 Files

Hi David

I like the new stream but it has a long way to go, the original stream took
a while to sort out, but the time jumps and not keeping its place in a book
are real nuisences, I manage with it but hope they correct these issues
soon.

Adrien

Whilst we are on our wish list for the new update I would personally like
the return of the ability to navigate by time within Mp3 Music files. That
is, 30
seconds, 1 minute or 5 minutes and so on.
For some reason this feature has been excluded from the VR3.
The only current navigation options are to fast forward or rewind with the
arrow keys.
This is not so much an issue if you are talking about a 3 minute pop track,
but if you are reviewing/ studying a classical piece up to 30 minutes long
it is very frustrating not being able to jump by time to an indicated part.
For example a few weeks ago we were asked to review a section 15mins 47
seconds into the movement. Currently the VR3 is an utterly unsuitable player
for this task.
The only option then is to dump the music tracks into the Other books folder
and as you say even there, time navigation is unreliable.

Hello!

?

Apologies for the late response, as I was attending ATIA in Orlando last week.

?

The work is ongoing, and it’s going well. We’re doing some tests and encountering some issues, which was expected. We’re probably going to be able to do an internal beta (beta is internal on the Stream).

?

1.3 is slated to release around April, and I’m hopeful we’ll have it included in that release. I would say there’s about an 85% chance.

Same features as the VRStream 2, so yes, AudibleSync to an SD card.

?

Internal memory I’m not sure, we need to see their implementation first (we should have a preview in a few weeks).

Hi Mathieu

?

That is good news about the VRS3, does this mean that Audible books will be able to be downloaded direct from the Audible Sync app to the VRS3?

Best wishes

Subject: [dap-uk] Update on Audible and HW Companion

?

Hello everyone,

?

Two updates today.

?

1- Audible

?

Last we heard in August, Audible was going to provide an update on September 12th. And they delivered! They told us that the work is well in process, they have prototypes and it's going really well on their end, but they still have some bugs to fix.

?

They plan on delivering us (at HumanWare) a beta version of AudibleSync so we can start development and testing on our end. This means that, if all goes well (and at this point, I'm cautiously optimistic), it will be in the 1.3 release for Q1 2024. Yay!

?

?

?

2- HW Companion

?

We finally released the new version of the HW Companion with MTP compatibility for the Stream 3. It also also now has the VRTrek listed as a supported device (it always worked with the VRTRek, but you had to choose the Stream 2). The Stream 3 is the "Stream 603" version.

?

It can be found on (and a link to that page will be added to the Stream 3 page later today).

?

Thank you all!

?

Mathieu
