Re: Mystic Access tutorial for the Stream 3 - Now with TuneIn included!
I will try and see if it works later on the Stream3 and Evo. However it clearly works on the PC with VLC unlike the pls produced by the Humanware Companion so that is promising. I see from looking at it that it already has Boon and Boon light. I will try and add Serenade in the same format to see if that works as well.

Re: Mystic Access tutorial for the Stream 3 - Now with TuneIn included!
Hi David
You don't need the Humanware Companion to make a playlist for the VR Stream. At least you didn't need to use it for the 2nd generation.
The .pls file is just a text file, so you can open it with Notepad or any other editor. When you import it into the Stream the program adds more information.

Re: Mystic Access tutorial for the Stream 3 - Now with TuneIn included!
? Well here is a mystery. ? The stream urls for both Boon and Serenade work fine in VLC and also work when put into vanilla m3u files. ? However when I use the Humanware companion to create a playlist file it provokes an error from VLC. The Humanware Companion I have creates a PLS file but I think should still work with the urls. I have not tried importing onto the Victor Stream but from experience if the file does not work in VLC they are unlikely to work on a media player. I tried simply changing the file extension ?from PLS to m3u but no dice. ? Anyway here is the link to download the Boon playlist file which will work on PC and evo at least. ?

Re: Stream 3 - version 1.2 announcement
Hi, A Calibre book is only an MP3 book, not a Daisy book, just standard MP3. So just stick it in any folder on the computer, and browse to it with the Milestone. It should play the files in order. All the best Steve

Hi Matthew ? Ok, thanks for this, looking forward to installing the up-date. Is anything being done to allow us to download either rnib or calibre books on to our streams? ? I am currently reading some books and the time jump seems to be a bit messed up, not sure if it is the book or the stream. If I am jumping back 5 minutes, it doesn’t seem like 5 minutes, seems to be less time than that. Also in one book, the book jumped between section or chapter 36 and went to 32, I think this may be the book though. ? I have always felt that the stream has a lot to offer, it is very versatile, there is a lot it could do. I have had all the streams, they’ve all been very good, thanks Matthew and keep up the good work. ? Regards Adrien ? ? I’m pleased to announce that 1.2 will be coming out… drumroll… TOMORROW! That’s right! Tomorrow morning (sometime before noon Eastern time), we’ll be flipping the switch on for the over-the-air update from version 1.1 to version 1.2. We know you’ve been waiting for it for a while… and I hope this was worth it! We think it is. ? For TuneIn Radio, it is a first version of the implementation. Certain functionalities aren’t there yet (most notably, speed control in podcasts and the ability to resume playing where you left off in a podcast/book), as those features weren’t in the documentation we had from TuneIn. But we are working with them to get these in 1.3 (and added to their documentation for their future implementations!). So without any further ado, here’s a list of new features, and bugfixes. Please note that the bugfixes are the most “visible” ones we fixed, but we fixed more than just what’s below. Again, we think you’ll really like it! Victor Reader Stream 3 software update version 1.2 has the following new features: Listen to Internet radio stations and podcasts! You can listen anonymously, with a free account, or with a premium account. To learn more about TuneIn, visit their website at tunein.com . DAISY ONLINE DYNAMIC MENUS We are now supporting dynamic menus for Daisy Online (DOD) services, allowing the users to get personalized menus when navigating their national library. (This is mostly used outside of the US, the US doesn’t have a DOD library) We are using the new API from NLS BARD which greatly improves search results. Try it! (English collection only for now) CHANGE SYSTEM LANGUAGE ON-THE-FLY You can now change your system's locale on the fly by accessing the Languages settings menu. You need to be connected to wifi as this will trigger a download of the new language. BETTER SUPPORT FOR MAC FILES The Stream 3 will now ignore "system" files (typically starting by a period or an underscore character) on SD cards. SD CARD FORMATTING SUPPORT Format your SD card directly in your Stream. Cards larger than 32gb will be formatted in exFat for better support. This option is in the diagnostic menu (boot using keys 2 6 and 8) for technical reasons. And a lot of bugfixes! This new version fixes the following issues: The 5 key will again give the podcast information when used Improved HLS streams support for Internet radio (some stations that didn’t work before might work now) Podcasts import files generated from the HumanWare Companion can now be imported We now check for update immediately after adding a podcast feed instead of waiting for the next update window Certain search results weren’t numbered, they are now Jump by percentage in text file should behave better Fixed a crash that erased the reading position in books after a shutdown Go To in the notes bookshelf works properly now Fixed an issue where some files couldn't be deleted in the $VRMusic folder Fixed an issue where automatic shutdown after 30 minutes of inactivity would not happen The Stream should return in the last used bookshelf after a reboot Bookmarks now use the first available number instead of the number after the highest bookmark, consistent with the behavior on the Stream 2 Fixed an issue where you couldn’t copy books/write to card on certain SD cards 256 gigs and larger Lots of Bookshare/text files interruptions were fixed. We are still seeing some issues and are investigating them but this release should be more stable. Fixed level navigation in the References bookshelf Navigation in NLS search results improved Exporting playlists using the 3 key in the Internet Radio bookshelf now works properly Offline bookshelves now refresh more smoothly when adding/removing content Raised the limit for book size in Bookshare Go To Time in Daisy/NISO books works properly now Fixed some crashes when recording certain Internet Radio stations Fixed some crashes and navigation issues in the podcast app Fixed a crash when adding certain Internet radio stations to the favorites Booting in diagnostic mode now plays a double beep Improved time announcements Fixed an issue where the TTS was sometimes cut prematurely when reading certain messages And now that this is behind us, 1.3 is on the work table. I can’t start talking about it just yet, but one thing I can tell you is that the file ordering is, for me, one of the top priority features to get in 1.3. Lastly, Peter Tucic and I will be doing a webinar on November 20th at 4pm Eastern time to discuss this new release! Please join us by registering at: The future is looking good!

Re: Stream 3 - version 1.2 announcement
Hi Steve ? Also for me personally, I like the milestone because you can carry it around on a lanyard and not know it is there it is so light, the stream, the only way to do that is to have it in a case and there is no other way of doing it. I think even the evo10 has a lanyard. They could have put something on the stream to add a lanyard, I drop it quite often and without the case it makes the stream more vulnerable. ? ?

Re: Stream 3 - version 1.2 announcement
Hi Ray Yes, We have lost the references part on the stream, didn’t use it very often but it was there if we needed it, also the clock, for me personally, we are getting less but having to pay more money, other devices offer far more but as I said I love my stream for reading books but it’s a lot of money to pay out just to read books, I use my phone for calls, texts and other forms of communication, but not for reading. I am not comfortable using several apps at once like I do on my pc. All my daisy players have their own pros and cons but the milestone is a bit cheaper than the new vr stream but it has audible, weather, agenda, and other features. ? ? ?

Re: Stream 3 - version 1.2 announcement
Adrian, I think you reflect a widespread feeling about the VR3.?
Speaking entirely for myself I feel the Victor Reader interface is
the most comfortuble for reading audio books probably reflecting
that it was well conceived in the first place some 20 years ago or
more.
Were Humanware to do a radical review of their approach to this
sort of device then to my mind it could involve consideration of a
keypad as an interface to a phone/tablet which would perform the
heavy work of processing and, hopefully, keep up with the ever
changing operating systems instead of the rug being perpetually
being pulled away under their feet.
I know all too well how the at times, evangelistic enthusiasm of
all things touch screen proclaims so furbantly we must all be
happy and content to use touch screens but I would guess that
still around a third of blind/vI users are much happier using
keypads for easy and convenient listening to radio, podcasts and
audio/talking books.
A good deal has been said about the HIMS players which can,
amongst other things, accomodate BBC Sounds, but I would like to
hear more about the Milestone who's only downside appears to be
lack of a podcast client.
Now I can access BBC stuff via a smart speaker this is now
becoming part of my BBC Sounds prefered access to BBC services,
butcertainly NOT the smart phone app.? For some the drawback of
using Google or Amazon speakers is the delay imposed on the
streams but, apart from sports coverage - often nobbled by rights
restrictions - the only other situation where its a nuisance is
taking part in phone-ins, but then if you do get in on one of
these then you are of course obliged to take the radio programme
you are joining in with on the phone while you waite for the
presenter to get to you.
to return to the Stream, Yes, a few more extras such as timers,
alarms, and so on would not come amiss.
Ray.

Hi
?
Not
trying to be negative but I think for me personally this may
be the last victor stream I will buy, the price is going up
but we are getting less features on it. I know it is only
the 2nd up-date but all the things I can do on my
stream I can do on my other devices, milestone and evo 10
and they give me more features, weather, clock, compass,
etc, we don’t have the choice of facilities they have in the
states, no nls bard or anything like that. I primarily use
my vr stream for audio books, for me I prefer the way the
stream organises my books, not in the way the stream 3 does
them right now because of the bug but they are easy to find
my way around them especially on my stream mark 2. I know
humanware is working on getting us the rnib and perhaps
calibre in the future but that is it, I think we can do all
of that on alexa and to be honest, I prefer to copy my books
to the sd card anyway. Because the stream has breached the
?400 price range, I will be very reluctant to buy another
one just now. I have always liked my vr streams but for me
to buy another one, I would like to see more features on it
for us in the uk. I use it for podcasts, internet radio but
can do the latter on my alexa. I think when the stream first
came out, we didn’t have the choice we have right now. I
have always loved my stream and find it very easy to use but
it is the higher price which would put me off if it wasn’t
for the pay monthly option through devide buy. Again this is
just my point of view. ??

Hi Matthew
?
Ok, thanks for this, looking forward
to installing the up-date. Is anything being done to
allow us to download either rnib or calibre books on to
our streams?
?
I am currently reading some books and
the time jump seems to be a bit messed up, not sure if
it is the book or the stream. If I am jumping back 5
minutes, it doesn’t seem like 5 minutes, seems to be
less time than that. Also in one book, the book jumped
between section or chapter 36 and went to 32, I think
this may be the book though.
?
I have always felt that the stream
has a lot to offer, it is very versatile, there is a lot
it could do. I have had all the streams, they’ve all
been very good, thanks Matthew and keep up the good
work.

I’m pleased to announce that 1.2
will be coming out… drumroll… TOMORROW!
That’s right! Tomorrow morning
(sometime before noon Eastern time), we’ll be flipping
the switch on for the over-the-air update from version
1.1 to version 1.2.
We know you’ve been waiting for it
for a while… and I hope this was worth it! We think it
is. ?
For TuneIn Radio, it is a first
version of the implementation. Certain functionalities
aren’t there yet (most notably, speed control in
podcasts and the ability to resume playing where you
left off in a podcast/book), as those features weren’t
in the documentation we had from TuneIn. But we are
working with them to get these in 1.3 (and added to
their documentation for their future
implementations!).
So without any further ado, here’s
a list of new features, and bugfixes. Please note that
the bugfixes are the most “visible” ones we fixed, but
we fixed more than just what’s below. Again, we think
you’ll really like it!
Victor Reader Stream 3 software
update version 1.2 has the following new features:
Listen to Internet radio stations
and podcasts! You can listen anonymously, with a free
account, or with a premium account. To learn more
about TuneIn, visit their website at tunein.com .
DAISY ONLINE DYNAMIC MENUS
We are now supporting dynamic menus
for Daisy Online (DOD) services, allowing the users to

library. (This is mostly used outside of the US, the
US doesn’t have a DOD library)
We are using the new API from NLS

(English collection only for now)
CHANGE SYSTEM LANGUAGE ON-THE-FLY
You can now change your system's
locale on the fly by accessing the Languages settings
menu. You need to be connected to wifi as this will
trigger a download of the new language.
BETTER SUPPORT FOR MAC FILES
The Stream 3 will now ignore
"system" files (typically starting by a period or an
underscore character) on SD cards.
SD CARD FORMATTING SUPPORT
Format your SD card directly in
your Stream. Cards larger than 32gb will be formatted
in exFat for better support. This option is in the
diagnostic menu (boot using keys 2 6 and 8) for
technical reasons.
And a lot of bugfixes! This new
version fixes the following issues:
The 5 key will again give the
podcast information when used
Improved HLS streams support for
Internet radio (some stations that didn’t work before
might work now)
Podcasts import files generated
from the HumanWare Companion can now be imported
We now check for update immediately
after adding a podcast feed instead of waiting for the
next update window
Certain search results weren’t
numbered, they are now
Jump by percentage in text file
should behave better
Fixed a crash that erased the
reading position in books after a shutdown
Go To in the notes bookshelf works
properly now
Fixed an issue where some files
couldn't be deleted in the $VRMusic folder
Fixed an issue where automatic
shutdown after 30 minutes of inactivity would not
happen
The Stream should return in the
last used bookshelf after a reboot
Bookmarks now use the first
available number instead of the number after the
highest bookmark, consistent with the behavior on the
Stream 2
Fixed an issue where you couldn’t
copy books/write to card on certain SD cards 256 gigs
and larger
Lots of Bookshare/text files
interruptions were fixed. We are still seeing some
issues and are investigating them but this release
should be more stable.
Fixed level navigation in the
References bookshelf
Navigation in NLS search results
improved
Exporting playlists using the 3 key
in the Internet Radio bookshelf now works properly
Offline bookshelves now refresh
more smoothly when adding/removing content
Raised the limit for book size in
Bookshare
Go To Time in Daisy/NISO books
works properly now
Fixed some crashes when recording
certain Internet Radio stations
Fixed some crashes and navigation
issues in the podcast app
Fixed a crash when adding certain
Internet radio stations to the favorites
Booting in diagnostic mode now
plays a double beep
Improved time announcements
Fixed an issue where the TTS was
sometimes cut prematurely when reading certain
messages
And now that this is behind us, 1.3
is on the work table. I can’t start talking about it
just yet, but one thing I can tell you is that the
file ordering is, for me, one of the top priority

Re: Stream 3 - version 1.2 announcement
First will say the iPhone lot can be as obbsessive and determined
in their advice re. the smart phone does everything.? As for going
in your pocket, means little or nothing to me.
Having downloaded the VR3 update now and done a quick assessment,
first its more stable and no interuptions to HLS streams now.? The
Bluetooth is working, but who knows if it might have been some
temporary glitch with my VR3 anyway, but had to delete Bluetooth
pairings first to get it to work.
A step in the right direction then but lets hope it can only get
better.

am better than what I was before cb radio, I had a real

that! Hence going into ham radio after a few years. You live

My
problem with voice control is that because I have what
people describe as a slight lisp it sends most of the Ais ai

I
can just about get Alexa to play my Flash Briefing and
Google is slightly better though still ropey. For whatever
reason, I don’t know why, but the engine which is most
tolerant of my lisp and which I can generally get some
dictation sense is via the Blind Shell Classic 2.
Anyway
it is another reason to be in praise of buttons for?

largely voice controlled and it was hopeless for me.

Yes,
you can do voice typing.
You
can also say “Send a text message to Steve” if Steve is in

say, and type it.
You
can say “Send a What’s App Message” or “Send a Message On
What’s App”, if you mention the application, it will often
work.
You
can say, remind me to take my pill at 8 AM for example.
You

Calibre, we had discussions with them, but they don’t have an API for us to access.
So for now, just RNIB.

For time jumps, we’ve made improvements. If you still have the issue, let me know.

Hi Matthew
Ok, thanks for this, looking forward to installing the up-date. Is anything being done to allow us to download either rnib or calibre books on to our streams?
I am currently reading some books and the time jump seems to be a bit messed up, not sure if it is the book or the stream. If I am jumping back 5 minutes, it doesn’t seem like 5 minutes, seems to be less time than that. Also in one book, the book jumped between section or chapter 36 and went to 32, I think this may be the book though.
I have always felt that the stream has a lot to offer, it is very versatile, there is a lot it could do. I have had all the streams, they’ve all been very good, thanks Matthew and keep up the good work.

Hi everyone!
Victor Reader Stream 3 software update version 1.2 has the following new features:
TUNEIN RADIO
Listen to Internet radio stations and podcasts! You can listen anonymously, with a free account, or with a premium account. To learn more about TuneIn, visit their website at tunein.com .
DAISY ONLINE DYNAMIC MENUS
We are now supporting dynamic menus for Daisy Online (DOD) services, allowing the users to get personalized menus when navigating their national library. (This is mostly used outside of the US, the US doesn’t have a DOD library)
IMPROVED NLS BARD SEARCH
We are using the new API from NLS BARD which greatly improves search results. Try it! (English collection only for now)
CHANGE SYSTEM LANGUAGE ON-THE-FLY
You can now change your system's locale on the fly by accessing the Languages settings menu. You need to be connected to wifi as this will trigger a download of the new language.
BETTER SUPPORT FOR MAC FILES
The Stream 3 will now ignore "system" files (typically starting by a period or an underscore character) on SD cards.
SD CARD FORMATTING SUPPORT
Format your SD card directly in your Stream. Cards larger than 32gb will be formatted in exFat for better support. This option is in the diagnostic menu (boot using keys 2 6 and 8) for technical reasons.
And a lot of bugfixes! This new version fixes the following issues:
The 5 key will again give the podcast information when used
Improved HLS streams support for Internet radio (some stations that didn’t work before might work now)
Podcasts import files generated from the HumanWare Companion can now be imported
We now check for update immediately after adding a podcast feed instead of waiting for the next update window
Certain search results weren’t numbered, they are now
Jump by percentage in text file should behave better
Fixed a crash that erased the reading position in books after a shutdown
Go To in the notes bookshelf works properly now
Fixed an issue where some files couldn't be deleted in the $VRMusic folder
Fixed an issue where automatic shutdown after 30 minutes of inactivity would not happen
The Stream should return in the last used bookshelf after a reboot
Bookmarks now use the first available number instead of the number after the highest bookmark, consistent with the behavior on the Stream 2
Fixed an issue where you couldn’t copy books/write to card on certain SD cards 256 gigs and larger
Lots of Bookshare/text files interruptions were fixed. We are still seeing some issues and are investigating them but this release should be more stable.
Fixed level navigation in the References bookshelf
Navigation in NLS search results improved
Exporting playlists using the 3 key in the Internet Radio bookshelf now works properly
Offline bookshelves now refresh more smoothly when adding/removing content
Raised the limit for book size in Bookshare
Go To Time in Daisy/NISO books works properly now
Fixed some crashes when recording certain Internet Radio stations
Fixed some crashes and navigation issues in the podcast app
Fixed a crash when adding certain Internet radio stations to the favorites
Booting in diagnostic mode now plays a double beep
Improved time announcements
Fixed an issue where the TTS was sometimes cut prematurely when reading certain messages
And now that this is behind us, 1.3 is on the work table. I can’t start talking about it just yet, but one thing I can tell you is that the file ordering is, for me, one of the top priority features to get in 1.3.
Lastly, Peter Tucic and I will be doing a webinar on November 20th at 4pm Eastern time to discuss this new release! Please join us by registering at:

For me, this is why these portable devices are becoming of less value, I'd sooner do it all on my phone. As the Internet Radio now uses TuneIn, does that mean we are restricted in the UK to what stations we can select, like we are on Alexa and Google?
