Unable to run D-RATS after install

 

Just installed D-RATS on my laptop.? I am seeing this error when I try to start the application.

Running WIndows 10, 64 bit. Installed the 64 bit version.

Any suggestions?

Please try to use plain-text captures for error messages when possible instead of screen shots, especially when using attachments.

This is a known issue in D-Rats.



As near as I can tell, Windows-10 changed how the default user directories are setup.

There are two ways to work around it. One is to create the directories (folders) that D-Rats is complaining about not finding. The other is to manually edit the D-Rats configuration file to put in directories that actually exist.

I have the same problem in one old Lenovo T430s.? I am able to run D-Rats in another PC (Dell Tower) .? Editing of d-rats is not feasible as the error only produces a debug file.? I have even tried copy of the configuration and even folders from the PC where D-rats runs perfectly and editing and error stills.? Have tried creating the shared folders and editing configuration. Nothing.

Both machines running Win 10 64 bit.? Have no idea or clue. Have tried D-Rats 0.3.9 all Windows options

If the folder exist it could be some issue about permissions.

If you Launch drats as aministrator, what happens?

Not wanting to hijack the thread from Kyle, just contribute.?

Speaking about my experience, yes I think if the program fails to create the Shared Folder at first, problem IMO will persist.? I tried with administrator, same behavior.? Question I have, the program write some value to Windows registry???

Hello Edfel,

The location of the D-rats config is in:
C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Roaming\D-RATS-EV where you have to put your username in place of %USER%.

You can edit it with the "write" or "wordpad" program depending on the Windows version, not "notepad" as the file uses line feeds for line ends, and notepad may corrupt it.

Look for a line with the "D-RATS Shared" and change the path to something that exists and save it.

[prefs]
download_dir = C:\Users\%USER%\drats\downloads

Put the actual username in instead of %USER%.

Then it should work.

John, precisely?I did that in the correct?directory (C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Roaming\D-RATS-EV).? I use notepad++, nothing.? Even my username is the same in both computers.? ?It is not a critical issue here as I have the other computer.? But is a nasty error.?

I have to admit I got the same problem when i had installed d-rats on my backup windows 10 PC, but it was before covid, and i don't really recall how i sorted this?out. and now i don't have this issue.?

I guess it was something very easy and quick because at that time?i did not?bothered to add this info to the wiki, (or at least i am not able to find any reference to this....)

NOTE: If anybody knows ho to fix this (or any other valuable info around d-rats!!) we can add a page to the wiki.

About registry: No, drats doesn't use any registry setting or use any specific tool of windows., this is to keep it platform agnostic- D-rats places? a config file? which can be edited with a text editor.?


About the missing folder issue:?

assuming you're running one of the latest versions of D-Rats (0.3.4 to 0.3.9) for the former?ones i? am not sure if the config path was shown in the debug.log),
??
the easiest way to see the config file is, when you get the error window, you shall click to open the debug log and then look at around?line 13,?

in my case the path shown in the debuglog is this one:

Config ? ?: FILE: C:\Users\mauri\AppData\Roaming\D-RATS-EV\d-rats.config

then you can edit (or delete/rename it to force d-rats to create a brand new config file)

in the?config file you can change this parameter pointing to any other existing folder where you have permissions
download_dir = C:\Users\mauri\OneDrive\Desktop\D-RATS Shared

The d-rats.config file does not exist in the folder ....AppData\Roaming\D-RATS-EV as mentioned above.? I have evening deleted and tried re-installing it again.

If you are running OneDrive, it moves the Desktop files to OneDrive and D-RATS fails on install. There are instructions to get around this at .

Well? I suspected from OneDrive reference in folders.? Confirmed.? Well I think this have nothing to do with D-Rats.? Not sure when I installed OneDrive but I have tried unlink, uninstall and everything in Desktop keeps reference to OneDrive\Desktop.? Even new folders after unlink.

Nothing to do with D-Rats, but to deal with OneDrive ... which have 'captured' the whole Desktop.? Unlinking, uninstalling not changes the Desktop folders OneDrive refence - preferences even for new folders.?

One drive is part of Windows and installs automatically. ?You can turn it off by telling the computer to only store data on the local computer. ?Then you have manually create the drats Share folder in the users\your name\ Desktop directory. ?Then reinstall drats. ?If you have trouble getting the maps to work copy the line from the landscape url up to the CycleMap url and the maps should work if enter your correct GPS coordinates for your location.
