Topics in Home Automation - New Article in Residential Tech Today

My latest article, "Rescu Wants to Keep Smart Homes Safer with Its Monitored Security App¡± is being published by the good folks at Residential Tech Today Magazine on their web site.

People who have installed smart home technology are, in many cases, bypassing the services offered by alarm monitoring companies to leverage the technology in their homes to monitor for intruders, fires, etc. themselves.? This can save homeowners a considerable amount of money but comes with its own risks.? This article looks at the issues with self monitoring a home and explores several different solutions.

You can find the article here:

For those interested in earlier articles that I've written, you can find those here:

Finally, for those that want to see even more content I've written about smart home technology you can find that here:

Re: Toolbox sysinfo timing out on CP4 #cp4 #toolbox

I assume that your 'forced' authentication connection is getting timed out - very annoying! (like most things lately!)

to mitigate, I was given the following console command to use (also works with 3-series and TSW with Auth ON)

SETLogoffidletime???????????? Administrator?????? Set idle time allowed before current user is automatically logged off

Default is 20 min
You can set to up to 60 min, or '0' which will not automatically log you off (I generally think that this is not recommended)

Re: NVX in a conference room that¡¯s divisible

Just subscribe to all the streams on the rx and switch them with analog, like DM

Toolbox sysinfo timing out on CP4 #cp4 #toolbox

If I leave a toolbox system info session running with the program load dialog open (inactive) for any length of time and then attempt to send a program. It will simply do nothing.
I have to refresh the connection and it will work until it breaks again due to inactivity.
Don't have this problem with CP3's.
Anyone else seeing this?

Thanks Thorsten, and Lincoln!

I remember seeing that procedure described many times over the years, but have
never had to actually use it :-)

This actually worked, on the first try.

Thanks Robert, and to all who replied.

NVX in a conference room that¡¯s divisible

Hello all !!
I am currently working on a conference room that has a 3x3 video wall as well as 5 displays around the rest of the room.? The client is wanting to be able to split up said conference room into 3 rooms or any combination of the 3.? I have a Biamp tesiraforte handling the audio control coming from 3 nvx 350's in encoder mode and attached to floor box inputs(audio and video) and a Shure wireless mic setup. I also have 3 tsw-1060's...one per "area". Room 1 will control all displays and audio zones, unless room 2 or 3 is active then it would only control the "front" which included the video wall and one additional display.

I'm having an issue where I am not sure how to setup the combine/separate on the NVX decoders.? I have been around the residential game for a long time and have never had to do something like this before.? Would I use a Multiple Serial Send to send out the rtsp stream to each decoder or run through a CCROSS to ECROSS ? I'm at a standstill ATM on this.? Everything is working through the web GUI as far as audio and video streaming on video wall and ancillary displays, just now working on the touch panel logic and it would seem that I am just drawing a blank on this.

Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.

BK

Re: Time from an Analog

Edited

As a follow up, The Analog/Time preset for TSW projects seems to be 'partially' broken - i.e. it does not update with incremental changes (but in a weird way...)

FTR, I've i'm using Daniel's updated module with the serial text for the remaining time...Thanks again Daniel!!

Re: Long copper run and NVX

We switched to Belden REVConnect as well and it has greatly increased our accuracy when terminating any kind of shielded category cable. Worth taking a look at if you're concerned about getting quality terminations.?

Re: Time from an Analog

Thanks, Daniel!? I'll check it out as I may have to use a different method.
This issue appears to be related to VTPro and TSW/xPanels....? Loading my project on an iPAD works fine, just not on TSW or xPanel...? Weird!!

Re: Crestron Go iphone testing #crestronapp

Thanks Wyatt,
That actually worked for me also...

If it doesn't work for others, as someone mentioned, try Save As to a 560P as this should render similar to the iPhone...

I spec REVConnect for all HDBaseT cable runs.

In a related story, I would definitely recommend looking at the Belden REVconnect termination system.
We've been using it for a while and I think it really helps to remove most of the 'Subjective' aspects of the tech's skills with terminations...

Re: Online Help

I also have had various intermittent results with OLH login.
I just tried it, and clicking on the main page help link did not log me in as current normal.
I then searched for OLH#?1000443 and it logged me in.
I have tried this in the past and sometimes worked/sometimes didn't work...

Use the reset 10 time procedure --

Press the reset button on the back when the Crestron logo is displayed
during boot Repeat 10 times Choose restore on the menu that pops up

(I'm logged in to OLH but search is giving me horribly wrong results -- I
thought there was another step involved but that's from memory so...)

The reason I was going to Online Help...

I have a TSW-1052 with authentication enabled, and no one wrote down or can
remember the credentials. I have physical access to the panel, but don't
know what the procedure is for defaulting it, without using Toolbox. Can
someone tell me?

Thanks in advance!

That is odd; if you manually build a dial command (outside of the module) and send it does it by chance work?

Wondering if perhaps the module rather than the codec is getting confused about the call state

Lincoln,

?

Thanks for the reply.

The crazy thing is that I¡¯m not getting an error.

I¡¯m also utilizing the hangup all calls.

It¡¯s like the codec is ignoring all new call commands.

The module stays connected and I can use camera controls or other features.

It¡¯s literally just trying to initiate a new call after hanging up from the previous.

Is it possible you aren¡¯t cleanly disconnecting the first call and if the codec isn¡¯t licensed for multipoint because it thinks it¡¯s still in a call it won¡¯t allow an additional call. If you issue the hang up all command before (not just ¡°hang up call 1¡±, etc.) that might help to clean the deck.

Hello All,

Has anyone seen an issue with an SX80 only allowing you to make one call and then having to reboot it before you can dial/make another call from the Crestron panel?
You can still make calls using the touch 10 no problem.?
We have updated firmware on the codec as well as rolled it back to see if that was the issue.
I can't seem to find what the problem is.?

Re: Online Help

I spoke to TB about it today as I've had a case open for a while (and I think Chris K has mentioned it a few times).
They're aware of the problem - apparently it's not the same for everyone.

Earlier I was able to get into my cases by clicking around "Email Us" and other tabs, but even that seems to be fruitless now :(
