Re: INTERLOCK and Beacons

Yes, I use a single radio. I use INTERLOCK=1 on all ports. You helped me a lot, thank you very much. I didn't send my .cfg because I'm away from the radio and notebook at the moment.

Thanks and best regards.?

Of course you could have two ports sharing one radio, and two different ports sharing a different radio...? But logically when a radio is being used by one port no other port using that radio could beacon.

See how seeing your config would have made it easier to answer?? I don't even know if I came close to helping...

Re: IDMSG only in Port 1

Good point. I use the UZ7HO driver on the ax25 port. I will try to use KISS but I am afraid of losing the INTERLOCK function with KISS.?

Turn the radio off for a while and see if the port starts showing that it is transmitting.? If using windows you can set the monitor windows to show your own transmissions. On linux you may have to open a window and connect to your node to monitor the port.

Thanks, Mark.?My concern is when some user is using the ARDOP port, for example, the INTERLOCK is able to pause the AX25 Beacon.

Interlock identifies a shared radio between ports i.e. one HF radio doing both pactor and Vara, for instance.

Beacons are controlled by BTINTERVAL, BTEXT, IDMSG, and IDINTERVAL.? Note that beacons may not transmit on non AX.25 ports.

IDMSG only in Port 1

Hi folks. Why IDMSG is broadcast only in Port 1 (Loopback)? How to make IDMSG broadcast on my RF AX25 Port 2?

TIA

INTERLOCK and Beacons

Hi folks. Possibly a newbie question. INTERLOCK control the Beacons sending or they are sent independently?

Re: BPQ and What Modem?

I run Direwolf with the following for VHF packet:
?
  • Rigblaster Plus
  • Sabrent USB AU-MMSA soundcard
  • Gearmo USB-RS232 adaptor model GM-12FTD-USB

I like the Gearmo USB-RS232 because it has status lights. I'm not sure why I picked the Sabrent but I have used several and it works fine. The Rigblaster came with the radio when we rotated some gear out of the county EOC.
?
We do not have an HF radio in the node yet. I am a little cautious of the Rigblaster because it does not isolate the Speaker to computer connection. It will be something to watch. but easy to fix when we add the HF RMS.

Re: BPQ and What Modem?

not to chase a rabbit but i'll agree with you.
?
i have several tnc2 'clones' that run great whenever i need them.
?
2 heathkit handi packets are used as fill-in aprs digipeaters.
?
the 'pc requirements' for real TNCs are minimal to none (depending on purpose) since all the 'muscle' is in the tnc itself.
?
just about ANY tnc2 clone with a kiss only rom installed will perform as a packet workhorse for bpq day in and day out.
?
for portable ops, a mobilinkd tnc is great.
ahh, if only a hardware vara tnc that connected via real serial port or bt existed.

Re: BPQ and What Modem?

John,
? In North Carolina we have a network of a couple of dozen stations made with surplus commercial 2-way radios and $45 USB KISS NinoTNCs. Each station has a Raspberry PI G8BPQ node and 2 or 3 radios to make fast dedicate links. ? By using dedicated links, we can organize our channels 2 stations at a time so it is easy to use the 15 different modes the NinoTNC offers. ?This link at 3600 baud, that link at 9600, depending on the kinds of radios and the radio path quality between the stations. ?We can also use yagi antennas when practical and we can set the channel sharing numbers to wide open. ?

NinoTNCs have an advantage over software TNCs in that they are trivial to configure with switches on each to set data-rates, transmit levels, TxDelays, AC/DC coupling, and so on. ?The NinoTNC has very informative LEDs including a Good-Packet-Received LED which when coupled with the send-test-packet button, makes it really easy to debug a packet link. ?Direwolf worked very well but was really difficult to scale when a node had more than a couple of link radios. ?

?I guess it depends on what your G8BPQ node¡¯s mission is. ?We¡¯re running Internet-free and are dependent on really good radio link performance so, all stations taken into account, there¡¯s always something being tweaked, added, subtracted or some such. ?

NinoTNC has been spectacular for this. ?Before NinoTNC we used TNC-PI but were stuck at 1200 baud. ?We used Direwolf to make faster links. ?But abandoned both when NinoTNC was ready to go. ? The other TNCs were just way too expensive, and especially so if we wanted other than 1200 baud. ?

We released NinoTNC to the big-wide world so the state of the art would be pushed. ?We even make it available for free for other clubs to reproduce. ?For around 45 USdollars (after ordering all the parts in single-quantity), it is worth looking at. ?

Check it out: ?? ? ?Scroll down for our promotional poster image. ? The TARPN project is providing the CPU and PCB for cost $12 US, and you buy the rest of the parts from your choice of parts supplier. ?The assembly instructions are on that web site as well. ?I think you¡¯ll be amused at the Assembly Instructions even if you aren¡¯t in the market for a hardware TNC. ?

Re: BPQ and What Modem?

As a BPQ32 Sysop/Windows 7 my node runs Kantronics 3+ in KISS mode. I love the ability to attach external hardware to the computer instead of using the internal sound card.
?
As a member of I would love to see John BPQ write a driver for the PacComm and MFJ-1270x modems with the 6PACK chip inside. Despite being legacy hardware, they can be found everywhere. The EastNet group has a very large membership with PC/FlexNet and FlexNet32 stations from Maine down to Florida. While most use FBB, I'm a bigger fan of BPQ BBS and all of it's advantages.
The topic has been discussed on here before and hope John BPQ brings it to fruition:
?
If possible, I'd love to see BPQ have the ability for users to send a POCSAG page out through an attached Encoder. Yes, we know about DAPNET, but the BPQ Network is already established and extensive with nodes everywhere. The benefits are vast: imagine getting a page when your email is in or set it to forward certain bulletins (ie: NTS, etc.), paging another ham, getting a page when an alarm is triggered, or WX/ECOMM, etc. etc. The Kantronics 9612, et. al.? has the ability to send a page from packet (but not in KISS mode). Perhaps there is a way to interface that TNC with BPQ...
?
I'd love to start another thread on this....

Re: BPQ and What Modem?

I'm a believer in hardware, too.? I like knowing I can turn it on and just have it work.? Soundcard modems have always been too much of a pain for me.

NinoTNC is probably the best option today.? Gives you exactly what you need.? KISS, multiple on-air baud rates and I2LP.? Kantronics KPC-3 and KPC-9612 are always good options, just much more expensive.
