Atlas mill knee mystery version of the manual
I think the threaded hole is for the table stop that's used for the hand miller version MH model) of the mill. See page 14 of the 1948 version of the manual.

Atlas mill knee mystery 4
I have two confusions today regarding the cleaning and re-assembly of my mill. Upon disassembly of the knee, I heard a rattle. The rattle turned out to be a ball bearing 0.28 in diameter. I have looked in the bulletins and found no item like it. Also, the part listed as 10F-46 bearing with bushing is not hex-sided as shown. Rathe mine uses a pin spanner to losen. I wonder if anyone can give insights about the ball - is it just a stray part I inherited from previous owners that has been rattling around waiting for my discovery, or is it needed somewhere? The difference in part 10F-46 is less concerning, but I wonder if that helps narrow the date range of the mache or at least the part. Thanks for any insights.

Tangential Topic 13
This may or may not have anything to do with Atlas/Craftsman, but might give you an idea if you run into a similar problem. I have a Delta 1" belt sander that uses plastic wheels. Some of the wheels are covered with a rubber tire. Anyway, the price for replacement wheels are pretty salty -like 10x more than I paid for the machine. Unable to bring myself to make such a purchase, I got the idea of gluing up a couple of PVC fittings I had laying around and turning it down on my lathe. Turning PVC is not hard, but is a little weird. Here is what I came up with in the end. Maybe someone else can use this idea for some other obscure or expensive part. FYI: I think I had about a .003-.004 interference fit on the bearing. I figured plastic was forgiving enough to ballpark it.

Made a camera doodad for upcoming trip 13
This might be an admission of being an oldster but here goes. We still use an SLR camera (yes digital) when we travel. Some years ago we picked up a minimalist tripod (About 5" tall with bendy legs for leveling and pointing.) An upcoming trip in 2024 may need this tripod for taking aurora movies or pictures at night. I was playing with the camera setup and realized the small tripod would tip over with our long lens installed. Solution was pretty obvious. The tripod center needed to move about 2" towards the front of the camera assembly. With materials from the bin, a multiply cross tapped aluminum bar, a knurled knob and captured screw made an adjustable offset system. Holes are 1/4"-20 on 1/2" centers. Cross drilled in case I want to do something unusual. (It may help to point vertically) Knob is a piece of aluminum scrap. Knurling aluminum is easy of course. Stainless SHCS with the middle threads turned down for screw capture function. SHCS head is force fit into the knob. About .010 press as I was too lazy to make a tiny boring bar and I didn't think about using a small mill cutter as a boring tool until right now. It was about all my vice wanted to do pressing them together.

Zamak alloy 16
So, through this forum, I have learned that some parts on the Atlas mill that to look like aluminum are zamak. I am assuming (I can do a displacement test I have learned since Zmack is about twice as dense as Aluminum) that the Mi-252 eccentric is also zamak. So there are souced that sell zamak rod but it's available in 3 alloys 2, 3, or 5. Any suggestion on which is best?
