Re: Allen key size for Craftsman 101 4 jaw chuck
I suggested a bit of quality time with a belt sander & 1/4" hex key.? Very few people make a hex key from scratch these days. :) Bill in OKC William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Aphorisms to live

Re: Allen key size for Craftsman 101 4 jaw chuck
I can NOT believe this thread grew this many legs. If SAE does not fit get metric allen wrenches. Hell for a metals forum no one is jumping in to MAKE your own! Weld on some metal to your SAE allen

Re: Allen key size for Craftsman 101 4 jaw chuck
I have a 6" Craftsman 4 jaw chuck that came on my South Bend 9" lathe, and it takes a metric hex key (Allen wrench) that isn't in most sets of Allen wrenches, maybe a 7mm if I remember right.? A 1/4"

Did you need a receipt ? I broke one of those 1/4" drive socket adapters . I went to replace it? &? I was talking to a manager ( who had no idea where they were in his store ) he told me they had a

I have confirmed with Harbor Freight that they do exchange broken allen sets for new if the old failed. Darn fine warranty! Jim

Re: Allen key size for Craftsman 101 4 jaw chuck
Then you probably need a 15/64th . Good luck finding one at the usual sources. I tried to find one online, and no joy.? You could try spending some quality time with a belt sander and a 1/4" hex

Re: Allen key size for Craftsman 101 4 jaw chuck
Metric might fit or might not. Has anybody considered that the chuck is worn out and it is no longer a "Standard" Allen size? ________________________________ Sent: Tuesday, August 1, 2023 9:26

Re: Allen key size for Craftsman 101 4 jaw chuck
After that many years it is probably worn . I would take a 1/4" allen and a diamond file and make a tool that fits better. Dusty wrote:

The chuck is original to the lathe. It dates back to 1930 ish. It was my friends first lathe as a boy. He was 80 some when I got it. His allen wrench was 7/32". It feels loose. Marty

Re: Allen key size for Craftsman 101 4 jaw chuck
15/64 is the between one , I'd take the chuck to the store & see what fits . Isn't 1/4 " a bit small for a 6 " chuck ? My 4" 4 jaw takes a 1/4 , but the 5 & 6 take larger ones , I'm guessin their

Maybe you need metric. Here are some set choices available from Harbor Freight. Other merchants offer similar ones. Charles

Allen key size for Craftsman 101 4 jaw chuck
What is the proper allen key to use with the Craftsman 101 6" lathe chuck? I have used a 7/32" key but, it seems loose. 1/4" is too big. The original owner verified that I should use a hex key but,

An Oreck XL010-0604 seems to work just fine. That's what was on it when I got it. Walmart has them for under $6 each.? They probably won't last forever, but I can worry about that later. ;)? Figured
