Re: Tool Post Grinder

Forgot to mention that it's a 1/3hp 115VAC/DC universal motor, so it should be speed controllable, too. Supposed to have a 3-wire grounded plug, but not anymore. Will have to fix that. Looks like 14ga. wiring in the existing cable.?

Re: Tool Post Grinder

Got it a bit ago, did some measurements with my HF 12" digital caliper, numbers aren't exactly right, but based on sizes and fairly close dimensions, it's a J-3, spindle says 35000rpm, designed for 9-13" lathes. So I scored pretty good.?

Fred, I could use the metal box, a set of pulleys, #190 & #721, and they are supposed to come with 1" & 2" wheel collar. Could use those also. I am sure I could make my own, but that thing can spin pretty darned quick, so I'd prefer factory accessories if I can get them. Also the the user manual.?

Not seeing any of these things for sale new, but the closest thing they've got, MSC Direct wants a bit over $5k for a new J-35. Suspect I'll be using vacuum cleaner belts, since they want over $70 for the correct belt, too.? wmrmeyers (at) sbcglobal (dot) net if you want to email me about what you have and what you need to get for it.?

Re: Tool Post Grinder

I found their website Sunday, and downloaded a number of their parts lists with diagrams. Is where I found out the sizes of the spindle nuts. Also one that shows the dimensions of the various machines. Figure it should be pretty simple to find out what I have. Preliminarily, from the photos, I'm thinking J-35 or lower... Of course, I could be an idiot, and have goofed up badly...?

In which case, I'll repair what I can, and put it back put it back up for sale, and get a different one.?

Re: Tool Post Grinder

I don't know what version it is now, but I'm hoping, based on apparent sizes of the spindle nuts and such that it's one of their smaller, J-2 or J-3 machines. Those are sized for 9-12" lathes. It doesn't have the data plate, so there's no info available until I lay hands on it. Should be here Friday, according to the post awfule. ;) I have a gadget that will tell me how much power it draws, another to measure the motor RPM, and calipers will measure the spindle nuts, and some other dimensions, and those will help me figure out what it is.?

Re: Tool Post Grinder

What I get is in the first two photos I posted. I will be needing all but 2 pullieys,? belt guards, and internal grinding adapters, plus some grinding wheels. Some put a 6" grinding wheel on it, and the manufacturer says maximum 3" wheels. I can make the stuff I need, but it would sure be easier and faster to buy. Once I have it in hand, I'll let you know what I'm missing so you can tell me what you have, and what you want for it. Just got the shipping info, should be here Friday.?

You wouldn't happen to have a bench top surface grinder in your stash, would you? Saw one on eBay that I could probably shoehorn into my mess, but they were pick up only, in the North East somewhere. Wife is sick enough I can't leave her even overnight.

Re: Tool Post Grinder

Low end, the spindle nuts are 3/8"-24tpi left or right hand thread, high end 3/4"-24tpi for a J-7 Themac. I'm guessing they're 3/8" nuts, and the screws that hold the spindle on are 5/16"-18, which would put it down in the smaller sizes I'm hoping for. As long as I've not underestimating things... ;)

Has T-nut setup. Will need some work to get it the correct size of T-nut, of course. I'll have to see what size fastener they used, and make a T-nut to fit that, as the T-nut on my machine matches the 9/16th-18 thread for my AXA-clone tool post.
