Novice question here.. I see everyone is giving a TIR (Total indicated runout) reading but not how it was measured. Over a year ago I purchased a Sanou 6” 3 jaw chuck along with a backing plate that was predrilled but needed the boss and face machined to fit. When done I put in a precision ground rod and measured it 4” from the tip of the jaws. The TIR reading was .002. I was very happy with the results. Is this the correct way to measure the runout of a chuck? I did it this way because I did not think that measuring?just the diameter of the chuck is accurate enough.

John

Re: I Need a 3 Jaw Chuck

As I typically turn items from about 1/4" diameter up to about 4 inches in diameter I measure the runout of my chucks by chucking a short piece of 2" Diameter TGP steel and put an indicator on the side of that bar not more than 1" from the jaws of the chuck then rotate the spindle by manually turning the large countershaft pulley,. That gives me go or no-go confidence that the chuck will provide reasonable repeatability from part to part of for a part that that's already been turned and needs some minor modification. Sometimes I will set the lathe to back-gear mode at slowest possible belt speed and snap on the switch and observe for 30 seconds or so just to satisfy myself that it turns reasonably true under power.

Most of my 3-jaw chucks are less than .005 TIR, and most of them are very old and worn chucks. I have a 6": Buck with two-piece jaws (not a Tru-Adjust) that comes in at just about .002 TIR.
I acquired a Cushman/South Bend 6" three jaw (two sets of jaws) at Cabin Fever Expo in Lebanon PA this past January that was a NOS in the original South Bend box. After disassembling and thoroughly cleaning off the Cosmoline, reassembling and rotating the backing plate through each of the three possible mounting positions the TIR comes in at less than .001.

How others measure TIR may well be different than my primitive method.

Well, two reasons. One is if you start with a piece of 1/2"
rod, and make several cuts on it, but don't
turn the original diameter because you want it to be 1/2".
Then, if the chuck doesn't hold things well-centered, the
cut parts won't be concentric to the uncut parts. That
would make you start
with a larger diameter piece of stock and have to turn it down.

The other reason is if you need to remove the part from the
chuck at some stage and then put it
back in for additional turning. You would have to mark the
rotational position with respect to the
jaws and put back the same way to get everything concentric.

Just a lot easier if the chuck holds things very nearly on
center.

Of course, if you turn the whole exterior of a part, and
don't remove until finished, then this doesn't
matter.

Jon

Yes, who cares about the OD of the chuck (except that it
could cause the whole machine to vibrate.)

You should measure the rod at two distances from the chuck,
to detect not only runout but also
wobble (techically nutation). Facing the backing plate
should fix the latter, if needed.
