Dead Center
The manual for my Atlas 10" says a sleeve is provided to go from a #2
Morse taper to a #3 Morse taper. I know little about machining and so I don't know if this means I could buy a #3 Morse dead center and directly put it in the headstock spindle and eliminate the sleeve. Would I be able to do this, or could there still be some problems in the taper of the bought dead center not matching like it should to the taper in the headstock? Stan |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAgree with Kurt.I have one as well.? For the price at CDCO, it is hard to beat.? Pretty good quality, especially at that price. -Jody -------- Original message --------

Quick Change Post
I have the Atlas 10" lathe. I do not know what the center to center is,
but the bed length the carriage rides on is almost 36" from where it meets the headstock to the end of the bed. In this group it had previously been determined that it is of vintage 1957 or so. I would like to replace the rocker tool holder with a quick change tool holder. Can anyone recommend a good one for this lathe? Stan |

Re: Atlas / Craftsman 10F-12 10" & 12" Lathe Half Nuts / Split Nut
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThis is called ¡°zinc pest¡± and is the result of the casting alloy (primarily zinc) having lead as an impurity.¡¯Tain¡¯t s¡¯posed to be any lead in there, but has been known to happen. In other words, this is an anomaly not something endemic to Zamak or other zinc-based alloys. The Zamak alloy used in our lathe parts is quite a strong & durable alloy. Check it out. BUT some few parts have fallen to zinc pest.? There is no way to induce this problem in existing parts, nor to remedy it (except replacing the parts). Jim Irwin

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Bill, ? Not taking sides on this one , but in my personal experience the Zamak parts do seem to vary in terms of longevity . ? Carvel ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bill Pendergrass ? I used a spacer to make the lines on the thread dial assembly line up correctly after installing new half nuts from Clausing. Regards, Rex On Tue, Feb 5, 2019 at 9:58 PM Robert Downs via Groups.Io <wa5cab=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: 3D Printing Files for Gears, etc
I have printed all of the Gadget047 gears and used them when I turned my ER32 collet chuck. Bill in OKC, I am just off SW 104th between May and Penn.? Give me a shout if you want to see my creations.? I used PLA and 100% fill.

Thanks for the links! One caveat for the gears from Gadget047, he says he designed them with a 20 degree pressure angle. IIRC, the original gears have a 14.5 degree pressure angle. Got to get my printer set back up, and get started printing again. Thanks for the motivation! Bill in OKC

Re: 3D Printing Files for Gears, etc
Too bad someone hasn't done that for all the gears and such in the 9/10/12 inch Atlas/Craftsman lathes, though some of them are available on Thinginverse. I'm trying to learn enough CNC/CAD stuff to do it myself, but it's slow. Got a place to talk about it more if you're interested.
Anyone else who might be interested is also invited. Not everyone who plays with lathes and such is as interested in 3D printing as I am, so I started this group based on the comments of several members of the 7x12Minilathe group I also belong to. Bill in OKC

Just in case anybody does not know, the gears for the craftsman 109, are the same gears that will fit the Atlas 618 and craftsman derivatives, I own both lathes and interchange gears at will.??
