Re: Concern with my Spindle

You can always use a dab of grease on the threads to hold the wires. No third hand required.

Jody,
Not being critical to anyone but ...
Having an indicator setup in the toolpost seems like a PITA .I've been using a mag base my entire life,? so versatile and I always have the contact at 12:00 unless I'm checking or matching an angle. Then 9:00 Is the way.
Did you practice holding the thread wires yet?
Dave?

I was in the middle of setting something up? in the chuck, and had the test indicator mounted in a QCTP holder.? I was setting up a piece in the 4 jaw and I inadvertently bumped the chuck with my arm and saw the needle move a good bit. So I purposefully tugged sideways on the chuck and saw the indicator move around 0.002.? My work piece was short but couple that with the amount of chuck hanging off the end of the spindle, I'm sure spindle movement appears exaggerated some. Also as you pointed out, the indicator was not on the headstock casting. I'll get the chuck off and check the spindle properly. I'm guessing the oil loss differential from the front to back bearings has to do with the metal dust caps sealing better on one end. I'm curious if other's oil cups are empty on the spindle each time they use it? Thanks, Jody |

Here are a couple photos of their current condition. The Atlas is complete and well oiled. The Sears is covered in saw dust as it had been sitting in a wood shop for years. There is no id plate, neither on the end nor the back. It is complete except for a motor. Both are sitting covered as I try to convert a 50x6 room along the front of my house from a greenhouse to shop space. Don On 1/22/2019 5:57 PM, Bill Buckalew via Groups.Io wrote: Don: |
Re: Concern with my Spindle
开云体育What's the indicator anchored to? If it's anything except the headstock casting you could be seeing deflection of something besides the spindle bearings.? Dave Sent from my T-Mobile 4G LTE Device -------- Original message -------- From: Jody <jp4lsu@...> Date: 1/23/19 07:19 (GMT-06:00) Subject: [atlas-craftsman IO] Concern with my Spindle Should this concern me? I'll try taking the wick out of the front and see if that speeds up the oil usage but the back seems to be emptying too fast IMO. When I rebuilt it I followed the procedures for setting the spindle and I seem to remember? the spindle should have about a 0.001 or so of play when cold. I'm getting over 0.001, maybe 0.001-0.002 when i pull sideways on the chuck.? Does this seem OK? My work is coming out nice and I think the force I'm putting on the chuck to get that deflection is higher than a cutting force on most stuff. Just checking to see if I need to adjust something or if anybody has had similar situations. Thanks, Jody |
Re: Babbit bearings
The babbitt bearings should be shimmed if they were done properly and are not too worn.? You can remove a shim on one or both sides to tighten them up.? ?This should be done with the bearings warmed up.? ?Babbit bearings are fine for low speed work, and there was an argument back in the day that they were more accurate.? Better ball/roller bearings and the the inevitable effects of old age reduced the number of folks in the babbitt bearing camp.? ?Clean the lathe up, clean the bearings up, use it.? The more chips you make the better the lathe gets.?? Charles ??

Concern with my Spindle
The last few times I've used the lathe, I put oil in the spindle cups and each have a flat piece of felt as? a wick laid in there.? Every time I put oil in them, the back oil cup is empty and the front cup is still practically full. It is probably the sealing of the metal caps that cover the front and backside of the? Timken Brgs.
Should this concern me? I'll try taking the wick out of the front and see if that speeds up the oil usage but the back seems to be emptying too fast IMO. Re: Little blast from the past
Thanks for the info Dave.? That looked like an interesting job.? I worked in a machine shop during before and during my college years, I actually miss working with my hands a lot.? As a airframe stress analyst, it's pretty much a computer jockey job with occassional trips to the floor to look at structure built on the line or test.?
Thanks for the pic and discussion.? Interesting stuff.? -Jody |
