Thanks Russ.

I was going to look at the manual when I get home.? I just thought I'd go ahead and ask in case anybody knew off the top of their head or if it is something pretty common amongst indicators.
I was in a rush last night and didn't investigate it.

I'm very careful with it and have only used it on the lathe. It is a
parallel model and the tip moves in the same plane as the dial face. I
noticed last night I went to use and the tip was not vertical. I dont'
think I bumped it or snagged it on anything. Is there an adjustment that
allows the tip to be repositioned at some other angle than vertical?
Most indicators (other than the Starrett Last Word) are adjustable for the
relative angle of the tip to the body - you just grab the arm and move it like
you're bending it where it connects.

The Last Word (and others like the Gem) have something of a saw tooth shape to
the attachment where you have to sort of pull it away from the body to change
the relative position.

MyMachineShop.net, run by Joel, makes some things.? I’ve ?bought a spindle thread protector for the mill (and 618) and several other things from him over the years.? He makes some parts and also sells used ones.

?

LIttleMachineShop.com sells mostly Chinese made accessories like QCTP and starter tooling kits but not AFAIK any repair parts.

?

But for repair parts, you should first try Clausing Industrial (was once Atlas-Clausing).? They still stock some new lathe parts and a few mill parts.? Prices are what one would expect to pay for parts from any manufacturer today, meaning that the prices reflect current labor costs.? Their telephone number is 1-800-323-0972.? 08:00 to 17:00 EST except Friday they close at 16:30.

I've been wanting a nice mounting bracket for a micrometer head and a dial indicator. I made one from aluminum and it works ok on my Southbend 10k. I have the standard micrometer stop but it doesn't let me get close enough to the spindle when using collets. The narrower one I made for the micrometer gets me close. I've been wanting to make a better looking unit and came across these castings. These will take a little work but I think they look great.

Perhaps they can be machined to fit the Atlas Craftsman lathes. I'm going to get 2 they are fairly inexpensive.
You can also get them custom machined here.?

Take a look at his drawing to see if they can be machined to fit your lathes.

It is accurate and repeatable, and cost under $100.

Adding XY DRO's (dumb, but effective and cheap I-Gaging DRO's) to the Atlas was one of the best upgrades I made, second only to the QCTP.

Guenther,
You make a good point about the swarf.? I was using mine on a mighty mag and had it setup up behind the carriage.? It worked ok, with exception of the magnet part of it.? I'm thinking of doing something that can hold the indicator and have a stop between the indicator and the ways.? Doing this I can take my measurements with the dial and then set my stop and then take the dial out of the holder to keep it away from the swarf.
Thanks for mentioning that, I didn't think about that aspect of it yet.?
Maybe I just go all DRO and forget this...Haha!

Thanks for the input, swarf is now going to be taken into account.

I used a horizontal rotary table on the mill with a ground HSS tool in the spindle to cut the dial graduation lines.??

Good job on the stops and indicator holder.? I saw those at Tall Grass.? Do you have an indexer or did you rig something on the lathe?

No worries Bill.? I figured if they were good enough for you they would be fine. I actually got them in the mail a few days ago, and also ordered thread wire adaptors that PD makes to help in using with the micrometers. So it suppose to be less balancing of wires.
