I actually have a fairly decent 3d printer so printing them out wont be an issue, but thanks for the advice on where to go to have one modeled. If I have to go that route, I would probably print them just to get it running and eventually have one machined out of aluminum. This part drive the entire lathe and I am not entirely convinced that even a part printed in CF PA6/PA12 would hold up to long but on the other hand if the printed gear fails it likely wont take any other gears with it.?
I did something similar in the past couple years.? First, I machined the part (first photo below) just to design it and then took it to my favorite CNC shop.? They declined to even give me a bit.? So, I had it modeled in 3D & generate the STL file and then had it 3D printed in metal (second photo below).?

For my application, I went with steel infused with brass, followed by nickel plating.? MUCH smaller than what is under discussion here.? 2-3 yrs ago, the price was fairly reasonable, but at least doubled in the interim.? I had the printing done at which offers a wide range of materials, including a .? For your gear part, I expect cost may be prohibitive done in metal.?

I have other projects I'd like to do with 3D printing, but have not made it far enough into the modeling realm (Fusion360) to make if feasible.?

Once you have your drawings, go to fiverr.com and find someone to do a cad drawing and an STL for it.?

I paid a guy 15 bucks to do that one time for me, so the price is not horrible.?

3d printing will probably cost more. Make sure the STL is 100% infill and the nozzle used is the smallest one because large nozzles make for very coarse parts.

Thanks for all your replies! I had looked at the drive pulleys for 618's and found them to be completely different and had already written them off as a source of good parts. I plan on calling Clausing Monday and hopefully they can send me some drawings if nothing else then I can pay someone to model them in their choice of CAD software. It is not where I wanted to be but at least I have a path forward. I have seen the headstocks come across Ebay infrequently and had thought about bidding... next time I will! Thanks again to those who responded.?

Re: MK 2 Drive gear

It’s possible that the part you need may be identical to a older model lathe.?
Atlas typically likes to keep everything the same for each model over the years.?

?Jim F,

That is not possible, the head stock of the MK2 is a complete redesign

I have a 618, the gear that is broke off his drive pulley is on the opposite side of the drive pulley than? 618.

MK2 gear is closer to the bull gear(part 5 in the diagram), the 618 is closer to the change gear train

The back gears of the two versions of the lathes are different lengths

Also how you disengage the pulley from the spindle to engage the back gear is also a complete redesign,

It appears the MK2 spindle turns inside his pulley when using back gear, where as the 618 the bull gear is the gear free wheeling on the spindle, being driven by the small gear on the back gear shaft

It appears nothing inside the headstock is interchangeable?

sorry to bear the bad news

Is Tom McNett still at clausing, or did he finally retire?

the gear and the pulley are one cast peice, the files you can find online are the change gears for threading. I do have a 3d printer but not the skills to re-create the pulley/gear in fusion.

Is it a gear that can be 3D printed ? Theres several Craftsman lathe print files that can be DL 'd online .

Re: MK 2 Drive gear

Below is a screen shot from my manual parts diagram.? Searching eBay may be one possible source.? Calling Clausing may be a better chance, but I don't have the number.? When I did have the number, they didn't have the part I was after (drive coupler) but did send a factory drawing.? Not sure that would help you, however.

MK 2 Drive gear

Matt Clayborne

One of my Atlas's gears lost a tooth and took out the drive gear attached to the drive pulley. The part number 560-194 is stamped in it. I see plenty of parts for the 618 but none for the MK2. Can a part be found for purchase, or is my lathe now an paper weight?

Thanks for your consideration to those who respond.

Re: Atlas/sears Lathe Parts

Atlas did not make parts to fit quick change tool holders....AXA, BXA, or any others.
They did, however, make the tool shown in the attached picture from an Atlas catalog of the time.
This states it will hold 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, and 3/8" boring bars.
