Re: Finally workbench for my lathe

Yes, I rebuilt the Rockwell drill press, I believe it is circa mid 70's.

Good eye on the Albrecht Chuck.? I picked it up used and ordered a.rebuild kit.? There is virtually no run out in the DP/ chuck combo.

I will be hunting for a 3/4" Albrecht chuck soon.? I bought a 20" Jet Drill press that was abused and am rebuilding it now.? I will rebuild the 3/4" Jacobs chuck it came with also.

I also have a Powermatic 14"? bandsaw I bought from Fort Worth middle school woodshop and am going to rebuild it.
Thanks for the compliments.? I love rebuilding and making things new.

Hi Jody,

Nice looking lathe!

I saw the other pic pre chip pan with covers open, nice.

Drill press looks good too. Albrecht keyless chuck? I have my grandfathers old Homecraft drill press, had a mortising attachment and spindle. Made a new spindle to fit the spare 1/2" Albrecht chuck I had along with a new quill depth stop.

Just a tip – if you want to keep your lathe nice and clean – is to put a baking tray within the drip dray under the chuck area to catch the bulk of the drips and swarf – easy to pull out and empty when needed. . . .? or use a layer of kitchen foil for the same purpose? . .?

So the motor is a Baldor 3 phase 1/2 hp.
I picked it up new on ebay for real cheap. It was a steal of a deal and made it much easier to justify the conversion. The original motor was likely going to require a re-wire and rebuild.

I have a Teco 1/2 hp size VFD.? I've been real happy with it and the technical support was very helpful with a direct line to technicians.? I called them a few times with wiring and programing questions...and they were very helpful.??

They are a great deal heavier (and more massy,

5" 4-jaw on my 7x10 lathe, I do NOT use the higher

I hate material getting under the headstock and pulling all that out from under there.

That'd a good idea, I'll have to do that. That way I can pull out the shop vac less often.

Just a tip – if you want to keep your lathe nice and clean – is to put a baking tray within the drip dray under the chuck area to catch the bulk of the drips and swarf – easy to pull out and empty when needed. . . .? or use a layer of kitchen foil for the same purpose? . .?

But note that while the base can help with the rigidity of the system very careful leveling and alignment helps even more. Check, shim, recheck until a test bar says OK! Bill,
Funny and stupid story, I set mine up with a VFD with fwd/rev, potentiometer, jog, and E stop.

I tested the E stop and was nevous that the thing would spin off.? I actually need to make the stop not quite as harsh.? But it didn't fling off the spindle thankfully.

They are a great deal heavier (and more massy, which is the real concern) that a 6" chuck. I have a 5" 4-jaw on my 7x10 lathe, I do NOT use the higher speeds, and take extreme care to make sure that the jaws don't extend enough to touch the bed. My Atlas has a Shars 6" 4-jaw now, and that is much more comfortable for making sure the bed is cleared. Atlas lathes have a threaded spindle, so you can also spin the chuck off if you reverse it or brake is sharply, which the 7x lathes don't have to worry about. Run it slow, and check it for clearance carefully, and be the envy of all your friends! (Want an 8" chuck, don't want to pay for it just yet. :)

Hi Jody ,

?

Whatever you are comfortable with which suits the work you do I guess . . .

I would be careful running a very large chuck with an out of balance workpiece in terms of what the bearings are designed to handle , but otherwise your choice . . .

Not a “rule” as such , but generally one has tended to “match” the size of the chuck to the size of the typical workpiece the lathe is designed for , and there is also an element of what is convenient to handle and get to that the chuck doesn’t “get in the way” of what you are working on . . .?

Enjoy ,

Mine is one big drip pan underneath the entire lathe. It actually helped during shimming also because it kept the shims from burying themselves into the wood as I tightened down the bolts on the feet.

Mine is a 24" lathe and it is just a large drip pan you slide under cars.? I think Bill in OKC gave me the Ida and let me know that Walmart sold them.

But a few small drip pans should work fin.
I'd on a wood top, have pans large enough to be incorporated under the feet and also lng enough to cathedral the oil coming off the transmission gears at the headstock.
